Locations in the Lone Wolf series
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aon is the name of the fantasy universe created by Joe Dever, in which the popular fantasy gamebooks series Lone Wolf is set. The universe contains magic which can be used for good or evil, and has gods representing these: for good, Kai, God of the Sun and Ishir, Goddess of the Moon; for evil, Naar, God of Darkness. It is a universe similar to our own, but there are also known Planes of Existence existing outside of it.
Aon contains many worlds, and all but one are ruled by good or by evil; Magnamund is the balance-point, the last world on which good fights evil, and is the world featured in most books. Outside of the universe are the four planes of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, and also the Daziarn where God-like creatures reside. The Daziarn is surrounded by the Plane of Darkness and the Plane of Light.
The Legend of Lone Wolf series of novels by John Grant describe the universe in more detail; Hunting Wolf in particular deals with visiting worlds other than Magnamund in the battle between the good wizard Banedon and the evil wizard Vonotar. The character Alyss from the Legend series regularly visits the Planes. The World of Lone Wolf (Grey Star the Wizard) series of gamebooks written by Ian Page are set both on Magnamund and the mysterious Daziarn plane.
For all eternity, an unceasing, timeless, formless war had waged between the Lords of Good and Evil. This war could never be won, as there was nothing to conquer and no standard by which victory could ever be measured. After countless years, Goddess Ishir, most prominent of the Lords of Good, secured a truce with Naar, the King of the Darkness. Ishir and Naar created a vessel to represent their truce, into which they infused their powers of life and death, creation and destruction. This vessel was Aon, the 'Great Balance'. To the surprise of the gods, from this vessel grew the physical universe with its myriad worlds and life forms.
The Lords of Good and Evil sought to control Aon. With their conflicting desires and a tangible battleground, their war began again in earnest, but with a clear purpose - the domination of Aon. Whichever side conquered the physical universe would become the victor, and the other side would be banished to the void. One by one the worlds of Aon were claimed by Good and Evil until only one free world remained - the world of Magnamund.
[edit] Daziarn
Also known as the Dazhiarn, it is another plane of existence. It exists outside Aon, and is filled with powerful beings and differs in a number of ways from Magnamund. Getting to the Daziarn can only be accomplished through a shadow gate. The Shianti roamed the Daziarn before they settled on Magnamund. It is the source of the Shianti power of Sorcery.
[edit] Magnamund
The most important planet in the setting of Lone Wolf, Magnamund is the fulcrum of the struggle between the Lords of Good and Evil - the last world in Aon which has not fallen to the Darkness (under the god Naar) nor been rescued by the Light (under the gods Kai and Ishir); the victor of this battle wins total domination over Aon.
Maps of various parts of Magnamund were available on the inside front cover of the Lone Wolf books, and the original paintings of these by Joe Dever were made available in 2005 as "Lone Wolf Originals" through Project Aon[1]. Magnamund is notable among fantasy worlds for not being yet another generic Dungeons & Dragons or Tolkienesque world. Notably absent are elves, halflings, goblins, and orcs. The land mass is split into the two continents of Northern Magnamund and Southern Magnamund, separated by the Tentarias strait.
[edit] Geography
Originally Magnamund was comprised of one land mass. During the Age of Chaos, when Naar sought to destroy the wise dragon Nyxator, Magnamund was torn asunder, and the Tentarias strait split the land into the two continents of Northern Magnamund and Southern Magnamund.
The northwestern quarter of Northern Magnamund is the Darklands, a hellish wasteland ruled by the Darklords. It is in this terrible land that the Darklords create their armies and breed creatures of darkness.
The northeastern quarter of Northern Magnamund is the Lastlands, giving rise to the human nations of Sommerlund and Durenor. It is against these bastions of hope that the full might of the Darklords is directed, for if Sommerlund and Durenor should fall, the rest of Magnamund would fall in their wake.
The eastern third of Southern Magnamund is characterized by the Sadi desert and the Shadakine Empire. The tyrannical Shadakine Empire arose under the rulership of Shasarak the Wytch-king to conquer the free states of the south.

[edit] History
[edit] Pre-Age of the Dragons (Before 12209 MS)
There was an eternal conflict between Ishir and Naar, and to help settle this dispute, they created an agreement called the Peace of Ishir, which was a vessel of their joint creation, from which sprung the material universe, known as Aon. Then began a contest to see who would conquer this plane of existence, and who would be forever banished from it.
[edit] Age of the Dragons (12209 MS - 10148 MS)
The God Kai sent the first beings to claim Magnamund for good. Nyxator was told by Kai that many of the sea dragons that followed him were turning evil, so in 12750 MS they went on land and created the city of Cynx. In 12209 MS he also created the Lorestones to preserve what he had learned. The false dragons, minions of Naar, waged war on Cynx and destroyed it and succeeded in killing all the sea dragons except Nyxator who fled to the center of the planet in 10148 MS.
[edit] Age of Entropy (10148 MS - 9000 MS)
[edit] Age of Chaos (9000 MS - 6700 MS)
[edit] Age of Eternal Night (6700 MS - 4608 MS)
In 6700 MS, Agarash the Damned emerged on Magnamund to take it for Naar.
[edit] Age of War (4608 MS - 3572 MS)
In 4608 MS, the Elder Magi appear to challenge Agarash and there began an age of constant war, lasting until 3572 MS with his eternal exile and the destruction of Naaros. In this time too the Doomstones were hidden.
[edit] Age of the Old Kingdoms (3572 MS - 1600 MS)
[edit] Age of Awakening (1600 MS - 0 MS)
[edit] Golden Age of the Shianti (MS 0 - MS 3004)
In MS 3004, the Goddess Ishir appeared to the Shianti and requested that they no longer interfere with events on Magnamund, as it would lead to the triumph of evil. They complied, and thus ended their golden age.
[edit] Age of the Black Moon (MS 3004 - MS 3799)
In MS 3072, the Darklords arrived on Magnamund. In MS 3799, the Battle of Moytura Pass took place, during which King Ulnar I and Darklord Vashna are killed and the Darklord armies are driven into the Maakengorge, ending the age.
[edit] Age of the Sun-Star (MS 3779 - MS 5050? Ongoing?)
After the fall of Vashna, the Baron of Toran was told by magicians that he possessed inner talents and abilities that he could expand upon. So he quested to find the sources of the God Kai's knowledge, the legendary Lorestones. This period leads up to the year MS 5050, at which time the massacre of the Kai occurred, and the emergence of Lone Wolf and his adventures occurred. In MS 5075, the Darklords of Helgedad were destroyed by Lone Wolf, ending their thousand year threat to the free peoples of Magnamund.
[edit] Darklands
The Darklords, arriving on the planet Magnamund, found its natural ecology the be toxic to their makeup, and therefore quickly created a realm where the sun never shone and the land was reduced to a toxic wasteland. In the wake of the Darklords destruction, left-handed magicians have attempted to reclaim these lands for natural ecosystems, but it appears that this work will take centuries to accomplish.
The Darklands cover most of Northern Magnamund, and border many nations, including Ixia, Ogia and Sommerlund, with which they are separated by the Durcrag Mountains. The major cities include Helgedad, Craagmantle, Kaag, Torgar, Mozgoar and Aarnak.
[edit] Helgedad
It is the fictional capital city of the Darklands, ruled by the Darklords in the gamebook series Lone Wolf by Joe Dever. A bridge of steel spans the Lake of Blood. The Lake of Blood is a kind of spiritual inferno, burning souls of those who fall in, and their agony fuels the city. Deep below the surface, near the level of the lake of fire, the Darklords' spawn was bred. It was there in the depths of Helgedad that the greatest concentration of Evil existed. The Tower of the Damned is the seat of the Archlord in the city.
The vast city-fortress was constructed on a granite island in the middle of the Darklands by Giak slaves of Archlord Vashna, though he never lived to see the cities completion. Darklord Zagarna did, and also completed eight other city fortresses of the Darklands.
Lone Wolf infiltrated the city in 5075 MS, killing a Darklord and then defeating the Darklord Gnaag in single combat. Then he placed a bomb under the transfusor that powered the Tanoz-Tuk'or, divices that allowed the Darklords live outside the Darklands and lead their hosts in battle. Lone Wolf escaped on the back of Lord Gnaag's Imperial Zlanbeast, and the city of Helgedad was leveled.
[edit] Kai Monastery
The spiritual home and training ground of the Order of the Kai.
The Tower of the Sun is the tallest tower in the Monastery. It contains the Lore Halls, the Kai Master's Hall and the Grandmaster's Hall. The Kai Masters' Hall is a chamber in the Tower of the Sun, positioned above the Lore Hall of the Spirit and below the Grandmaster's Hall. It contains a plain, wooden throne and green pillars. The Grandmaster's Hall is located in the topmost part of the Tower of the Sun.
The order was founded in MS 3810 by a Baron of Sommerlund who later renamed himself Sun Eagle. He set out on a quest to find all the Lorestones of Nyxator and cultivate his inner talents, to the point where he became a Kai, with many superhuman abilities in fighting, his senses, and the ability to cure himself and others. He founded his monastery at the northwestern corner of Sommerlund near the Durcrag Mountains.
During their long history, the First Order was renowned for their defense of Sommerlund, a vastly smaller country against the Darklords vaste hordes. During their time, it became almost a cyclical event of the Darklords attack and their repulsion from Sommerlund, thanks to the Kai. During Darklord Zagarna's war, the first order of the Kai was wiped out. And even after Lone Wolf successfully killed Archlord Zagarna and helped eject his armies from his country, he did not have time to attend to the creation of a new order. While Lone Wolf was sent to defeat the Deathlord of Ixia, other troubles were stirring far away in Sommerlund.
[edit] Sommerlund
It is a fictional country where the Sommlending, a race of fair skinned people with exceptional fighting ability live in the Northeastern corner of northern Magnamund in the game book series Lone Wolf, written by Joe Dever.
Joe Dever described them as "Nordic" in look.[1] They were created as children to the God Kai.
Sommlending is their native language. Known as the Sommlending, the native peoples of Sommerlund were created by the God Kai and the Supreme Goddess Ishir. They are said to have come from the Northern Void in MS 3434 led by King Kian. They were created in response to the continuous conquests of Magnamund by the Darklords of Helgdad. They were created to have talents beyond that of other peoples, and were gifted to grow even beyond their fortunate births into Kai Lords. They were also gifted with the Sommerswerd, a magical artifact of huge power that can only be wielded by a Sommlending.
The country is situated on the Northern continent of Magnamund in the Northeastern corner. It is a sunlit land of verdent hills, deep forests and rich farmland. Its principal cities are Holmgard, Toran, Anskaven, Tyso and Ruanon. It had been the Darklords' bane since the time of King Kian.
