Local Electoral Areas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Local Electoral Areas (often abbreviated as LEAs) are subdivisions of county and city-level local authorities in the Republic of Ireland used for electoral purposes. Each local electoral area will be made up of a number of lower-level units known as Electoral Divisions. Each LEA elects a number of councillors (the number can be anywhere between 3 and 7) to the various county or city councils that make up local government in the Republic. The electoral system used is the Single Transferable Vote.
For lower-level authorities such as town or borough councils, the entire town usually forms a single electoral area, returning either 9 or 12 councillors. (Exceptions to this rule are the towns of Bray and Dundalk and the boroughs of Drogheda and Sligo, where the towns are subdivided into smaller electoral areas which do not necessarily coincide with the boundaries of county electoral areas.)
