Lobe

The term lobe generally refers to a projecting part of an object, but it can have more specific meanings.

  • In telecommunication, the term lobe has the following meanings: (Source: from Federal Standard 1037C)
    • An identifiable segment of an antenna radiation pattern. (Note: A lobe is characterized by a localized maximum bounded by identifiable nulls.)
    • A pair of channels between a data station and a lobe attaching unit, one channel for sending and one for receiving, as seen from the point of view of the attached data station.
  • In astronomy, the Roche lobe is the region of space around a star in a binary system within which orbiting material is gravitationally bound to that star
