Loaded is a top-down shooting game that was developed by Gremlin Interactive. Released in 1996 on both the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn, the game received mixed reviews, and is notorious for its violence and gore. Loaded also spawned a sequel, "Re-Loaded", which was released on the Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn and PC at the end of 1996.

The onslaught begins as Fwank attacks, and is attacked by, other inmates.

Loaded's gameplay is similar to that of Gauntlet, which requires the player to move room to room killing everything in sight and collecting keycards capable of unlocking doors. At the end of each level, the game tallies the player's greed factor, accuracy and body count on a 0%-100% scale in order to give the player's career prospects (from "social worker" to "killer", "mass murderer", "genocidal maniac", etc.) and final score.

The game features 15 levels and 6 playable characters. These are: Mamma, Fwank, Bounca, Vox, Butch and Cap'n Hands.

The plot of the game is that these characters, all of them mercenaries, have been framed by a malevolent space pirate named FUB. The game begins in a prison in which one or two of the game's six characters must escape it, and engage on a bloody odyssey to exact revenge on FUB.

[edit] Playable Characters

Mamma: A very large psychologically disturbed man with the mind of an infant. He wears a diaper, bonnet and bunny slippers and can only say "mamma". Mamma's weapon is the plasma gun and his bomb is the Ripple Grenade, used when Mamma creates a wave through the ground that instantly kills a large amount of foes around him. This attack can travel through walls and doors.

Fwank: Featured on the cover of the game, Fwank is a man donning a bank bag over his face with the bag painted, making him resemble a clown. He carries around his teddy bear and a mood-shifting balloon (Green for "Chuckly", Yellow for "I Need Space", and Red for "I Wouldn't Ask If I Were You"). Fwank's weapon of choice is a cannon that fires Neutron Spheres, and his bombs are Homing Teddies, a floating armada of teddy bears that eviscerate nearby foes. This attack can kill enemies stationed directly behind a door, but can not travel through walls and doors. However, the teddies can follow Fwank and stay in use longer to attack incoming enemies.

Bounca: A former bouncer turned mercenary. He is about as large as Mamma, wearing a muzzle and a tuxedo. His weapon is a missile launcher and his bomb is the Frag Missile, a randomly-moving burst of shrapnel. This attack can not travel through walls and doors.

Vox: A female DJ that uses sound and music technology to kill foes in the game. She is the only female character in the game. Her weapon is the Hail Flail and her ultra bomb is the Sonic Blast, a burst of lethal sound waves. This attack can travel through walls and doors.

Butch: A homely man that wears ladies' dresses in combat and dislikes those that find it funny. Butch's weapon is a flamethrower and his bomb is the Explosive Ring, the release of fireballs in all directions. This attack can travel through walls and doors. Instead of splattering enemies into a bloody heap, the flamethrower and the Explosive Ring actually chars enemies' bodies on contact.

Cap'n Hands: A pirate-like character with freakishly large hands and forearms, but an exposed ribcage. His weapons are a pair of flintlocks and his bomb is the Vortex Bomb, a curtain of dark energy that shreds enemies to pieces. This attack can travel through walls and doors.

[edit] Enemies and Bosses

Guards: The guards appear most frequently. They can either attack by hand or by weapon (clubs or guns).

Inmates: The inmates usually are unarmed. The inmates attack mostly in groups and can quickly drain a player's health if they all attack simultaneously.

Crazies: These enemies are mostly found in padded rooms. They are the fastest of the human enemies and all wear straitjackets.

Dogs/Wolves: Mostly found in outdoor levels. They attack alone or in packs. The canine enemies are very difficult to target by gun.

Scorpions: Mostly found in outdoor desert-like levels. They attack alone or in groups. Scorpions are also very difficult to target by gun.

Rats: Found in outdoor and subterranean levels. They attack mostly in packs. Their greatest strength is their ability to respawn in a level and are the only animals that can do so. These are the most difficult animal targets in the game and are best dealt with by ultra bomb.

Mutants: They are large, blue and slow-moving, mostly found within the earlier parts of the first half of the game. They are not seen as often as human enemies but are not harder to kill. Their greatest strength is their ability to respawn in a level.

Zombies: The zombies attack alone, but mostly in large numbers. They are not difficult to kill, but their greatest strength is their ability to respawn in a level. Like the rats, backtracking in a room a player has already cleared is automatically refilled with new zombies to fight, making survival in a level featuring zombies that much more difficult.

Robots: Found in later levels of the game. They come in either the energy-ball-firing or flame-throwing variety. They sometimes attack two at a time.

"Armored Assaulter": This enemy only appears a few times in the entire game, and the battles with this enemy are very brief. This enemy swoops down from the sky firing energy balls at the player. After the player extends enough damage to him, he flies away, never to be seen again for the rest of the level. He usually appears on certain levels after the player has collected all the key cards and are close to the level's exit point. He somewhat resembles Master Chief from the Halo franchise.

FUB: The final boss of the game, and the entity responsible for framing the game's six mercenaries. FUB stands for "Fat Ugly Bastard". He is found in the final level after accessing his room with all four of the level's key cards. He has slim robotic legs, a protruding belly, and a head resembling a pig's. He fires energy balls and a variation of the Frag Missile that actually tracks the player, and explodes into shrapnel. With every hit the player supplies FUB, he fires two bolts of his Frag Missile in retaliation. He can withstand long periods of damage throughout the fight, but can be defeated if supplied enough damage in the battle.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

After FUB's defeat, a movie will play showing his bloody body laying on the ground, but the skin of his face melts away and his robotic skull flies away, setting the frame for his return in "Re-Loaded".

Spoilers end here.

Loaded features music by Pop Will Eat Itself.

[edit] Trivia

  • There is a special glitch in the game that allows the player to play as a bloody heap. If the "replenish health" cheat code is utilized immediately after the death of the character, the character's body is not replenished and rather plays on as the character's killed, splattered version. The weakness of this glitch, however, is that the player's guns are now useless (only the character's ultra bombs are usable after death), and doors in the level cannot be accessed, making ending the level impossible unless an able-bodied second player can access the doors for the slain player.

[edit] Re-Loaded: The Sequel

  • In the game's sequel, Re-Loaded, FUB is reincarnated and renamed "CHEB", which stands for "Charming Handsome Erudite Bastard".
  • Butch, Mamma, Cap'n Hands and Bounca also make a return in Re-Loaded.
  • Vox, however, is replaced in Re-Loaded by two new female characters, the nun Sister Magpie and the cannabalistic Consumer.
  • Via cheat code, Mamma & Sister Magpie can unlock hidden character Fwank for use in Re-Loaded.
  • All of Re-Loaded's returning characters have new weapons and/or variations of their costumes.
