From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Jubilee Class No. 5699 (BR No. 45699) Galatea is a preserved British steam locomotive.
[edit] Overview
5699 was built at Crewe in April 1936 and named Galatea after HMS Galatea, which in turn was named after the Galatea of mythology. After nationalisation in 1948, she was renumbered 45699 by British Railways.
After being withdrawn in 1964, Galatea was rescued from Woodham's Scrapyard in Barry, South Wales, originally to provide a spare boiler for sister loco Leander, and is being rebuilt for the West Coast Railway Company.
