Lizard Man is a fictional character from the 1980s cartoon series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Appearing in two episodes of the cartoon, Lizard Man was a member of the Heroic Warriors. As his name indicates, he was a cross between a man and a lizard, and although shorter than most of his battle comrades, his main attributes were his speed and agility, as well as his eagerness to battle Skeletor and the evil forces.

[edit] Character Profile

Lizard Man is notable among the many characters of the Masters of the Universe mythology by having never had an action figure made of him, despite his cartoon appearances. Planned as an action figure by Mattel in the early stages of the toy line, he was featured in the early cartoon episodes ("She-Demon of Phantos" and "Song of Celice") to promote a possible upcoming figure. However, over time he was eventually scrapped by Mattel, his figure was never made and he made no further cartoon appearances, thus consigning him to the realm of obscurity among MOTU characters.

In spite of this, Lizard Man has nevertheless remained popular among MOTU fans throughout time. Although he was unsurprisingly excluded from the 2002 revival of the franchise, many fans have retained hope for his inclusion in any future incarnations of MOTU.

[edit] Trivia

It is possible that the evil MOTU character Whiplash may have been developed from the initial concept of Lizard Man. Indeed, very early publicity for Whiplash is said to promote him as a heroic warrior.

Although he made no further cartoon appearances after the early episodes, Lizard Man's appearance was re-used for two characters in the cartoon's second season. The first of these was an unnamed reptile man who appeared briefly in "The Rarest Gift of All", while the second was a slave who made a background appearance in "Orko's New Friend".

Lizard Man is also notable as being the only reptile warrior in the MOTU mythology to fight on the side of good, with reptile characters generally being portrayed as evil (most notably Whiplash, Saurod and the Snake Men).
