Liz Phair (2003) |
Comeandgetit (2003) |
Liz Phair is the fourth album by American singer-songwriter Liz Phair, released in 2003 (see 2003 in music). The album received intense criticism from every direction. Though Phair had begun production with Michael Penn, she eventually used his work on only half the album, and sought out the songwriting hitmakers The Matrix, best known for their work with Avril Lavigne. Indie fans proclaimed that she had sold out, and pop fans thought Phair was too old to be relevant.[citation needed] Phair seemed unfazed, having decided to unabashedly pursue commercial success. It was hoped that the album would be an enormous hit, but it fared only as well as its predecessors, selling around 400,000 copies. It launched a hit in "Why Can't I" and a lesser hit in "Extraordinary." These songs were also featured prominently in several advertising campaigns and film soundtracks; "Why Can't I" was on the soundtrack to 13 Going on 30 and "Extraordinary" was used as the advertising theme for the 2004 WNBA Finals. "Extraordinary" has recently been used on a Propel Fitness Water television commercial starting in March 2007.
