Living Proof is the follow-up album to Believe by Cher. The album was released in November 2001 in Europe and February 2002 in the United States. The lead off single for Europe was The Music's No Good Without You, while Song for the Lonely served as the first American single.

[edit] Album information

The lead single in Europe and Australia was "The Music's No Good Without You", while the United States received "Song for the Lonely." "The Music's No Good Without You" received moderate success in the UK, while "Song for the Lonely" peaked at number 85 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart (one of three songs from the album to top the U.S. dance chart). "Alive Again" and "A Different Kind of Love Song" were follow-up singles, but none of the songs reached any much success except in single sales.

In addition "Song for the Lonely" was #1 on the Maxi-Singles Chart for 21 weeks beating out Madonna's "Die Another Day". Many of the songs may have not reached the Hot 100 because of the lack of promotion. The third single (USA only) was released as "When the Money's Gone/Love One Another", earning Cher a Grammy nomination for "Love One Another." She lost the award to Kylie Minogue's song "Come into my world"

Cher won many awards including a World Music Award for Dance/Club Play Artist of the Year and Lifelong Contribution Award.

The album was followed by Cher's multi-year Living Proof: The Farewell Tour.

"A Different Kind of Love Song" can be heard on the "Will & Grace" season 4 finale.

[edit] American 'Wal Mart' release

Warner Brothers later rereleased the album in the United States with the radio edit versions of "Song for the Lonely" and "A Different Kind of Love Song". There was no official announcement of this re-release, but Cher fans found out about it quick after the release. It has been penned the "Wal Mart" version of Living Proof, because that is the only place known to sell the re-issue.

[edit] Reviews

Cher returns to the dancefloor for her latest effort, Living Proof, churning out a dozen electronic, beat-heavy tracks about heartbreak, loneliness, and survival. Songs about strength and perseverance are no anomaly coming a woman who has managed to sustain a career that has lasted four decades; and it's no mystery that Cher would be the first to be right there when you fall, telling you to get up on your feet, dust yourself off, and get out on that dancefloor. And get up you will, with this peppy dance album that spouts warm sentiments and reverberating sounds to keep you going all night long. But the power of the album's punch loses its luster each time the auto-tuner kicks in, contorting Cher's deep, sexy voice into some kind of canned electronic robot dialect. It's not until halfway through the album that listeners get a glimmer of Cher's husky vocals on the dressed-down track, "Rain, Rain." Cher takes a brief break from her inquisitiveness about love to dedicate the bold, heartfelt opening track, in honor of the September 11th tragedy, "Song for the Lonely" to "the courageous people of New York, especially the firefighters, police, Mayor Guiliani, Governor Pataki." You can bet the clubkids and long-term Cher fans will appreciate the energy and attitude of the Spanish-influenced tune "Body to Body, Heart to Heart" and the rapid-fire drum beats on the airy track "When the Money's Gone" that is likely to keep them dancing until dawn. Cher has longtime producer Rob Dickins (the man who launched Enya's career) to thank for the sheer energy on this album. But still, the lingering sense of loss and longing echoing through on tracks like "The Music's No Good Without You" suggest that maybe Cher isn't the only one left still waiting for something truly magical to happen on this record.
