Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight documents Jimi Hendrix's performance at the Isle of Wight festival, on August 30, 1970, previously available only on heavily edited re-issues and on bootlegs. This two-disc set is the first official MCA release. Here, Hendrix is backed up by the Band of Gypsys' bassist Billy Cox and by the Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell. The setlist for the concert contained songs from his previous Experience albums. It also included new songs written around the time of the performance. Tagged into the set was an adaptation of "God Save the Queen" and a cover of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" played just before launching into "Spanish Castle Magic". The 22 minute version of "Machine Gun" includes walkie-talkie voice traffic from security personnel feeding through the sound equipment. The CD set is more thorough than the DVD release as it contains "Hey Baby" and "Hey Joe", two songs omitted from the DVD. In comparison the DVD includes the complete version of "Midnight Lightning" which is faded out on the CD version.
