Patricia Polacco
Patricia Polacco, born July 11, 1944, is a children's author, illustrator, and storyteller known for her colorful, detailed illustrations in her book Babushka's Doll. Polacco has earned many awards for her writings and illustrations in the following books:The Keeping Quilt, Babushka's Doll, Chicken Sunday, Some Birthday!, Dream Keeper, and Thank you, Mr. Falker. Her rich Ukrainian heritage shows through in many of her stories and illustrations, namely Babushka's Doll and Rechenka's Eggs.
Early Life and Education
Although Polacco,at the age of fourteen, was discovered to suffer from dyslexia, she went on to attend the local college. Polacco later attended Monash University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, receiving a Master's Degree in Fine Arts and a Ph.D. in Art History.
Career
Polacco, at the age of 41, began writing stories for her children. She was inspired by many authors and artists from her childhood, among these are: Beatrix Potter, Fedor Rojankovsky, and Norman Rockwell. Some of Polacco's modern day heroes are fellow illustrators and authors:Jerry and Gloria Jean Pickney, Tomi DePaolo, Rafe Martin, and Jan Brett.
