[edit] Use of Pound Sterling

Under the Money part of this page, I propose that alongside the US$ and the Euro, we use the British £ Sterling. The pound sterling (£ hereafter) is one of the world's major three currencies. Many British people (including myself) have no idea of conversion rates between the £ vs. $, or £ vs. €. The Guiness Book of Records themselves use pounds and dollars conversions in Britain, and in the event of euros needing a mention, the Guiness Book of Records uses pounds, dollars and euros.

My suggestion is that we should include records that have, or should have, a Wikipedia page. Therefore the world record of eating peas with toothpicks would not qualify... Also the page may become quite cumbersome after a time, so dividing it may be necessary. Also if the record cannot be clearly defined or it is under dispute, it should be noted.   • I feel like this list is getting a little out of hand. Almost none of the records on here actually link to an article about the record, even the legitimate records. I can't really think of a good way to codify a policy for this list, because the critera for inclusion is so subjective. I was thinking only articles that would mention the record in the first sentence, but there are some fairly noteworthy records that are only sidenotes in their subject's article and plenty of trivial records (see music) as well.     • I agree - would you be interested if I attempted to start a wikiproject on 'records' to co-ordinate this page and related pages I would like to create Japanese Records, Commonwealth records, Major league baseball records? There are many examples throughout this article where in numbers, commas and full stops are being mixed up. Like a building being 553,33 metres tall.

I recall that there was a record held by a Hungarian man (whose name I don't know) who spoke 36 languages. I can't remember whether I saw that in an earlier copy of Guiness World Records or elsewhere, I'll look into it though.

Is there a reason the article lists Jon Brower Minnoch instead of Carol Yager as the heaviest person? The article on Minnoch mentions Yager as being heavier.

I thought the largest empire was the mongolian empire at its peak, not the British empire. I know the mongol empire had the biggest percent of world population in it, but just counting the land area, wasnt the mongol empire the largest?

The british empire was more recent and the borders were more clear-cut, but lands like north of Mongolia and territories surrounding conquered cities are less clear.

well the Mongol empire extended from the pacific (in china) all the way to central Europe so yeah i also heard it was the largest empire.

I don't know if this qualifies, but this might be "There's a Riot Goin' On" by Sly Stone, which is listed on the album at a length of 0:00 minutes.

  • No offence, but this record is totally rediculous unless qualified, e.g. "the shortest top 20 song". The Napalm Death song isn't the shortest ever; I may have heard shorter on a CD by a local death metal group. Does anyone know anything about toys out there? Some colleagues of mine have built a jacob's ladder for a theatre production that is 4.5 m tall by about 0.3 m wide. The height of Olympus Mons can't be directly compared to that of Mount Everest, as the latter is given as above sea level, while there is no sea on Mars.

Heights on Mars are found by atmospheric pressure. I beleive that sea level on Mars is defined as the pressure of the triple point of water (611.73 Pascals), yet I may be wrong. Either that or the pressure which is equivalent to the sea level pressure on Earth.

According to Anime Insider, the longest-running animated series is not Simpsons but an anime called Sazae-san. I can't confirm this; I'd just like to bring some attention to it because Guinness has had it wrong for some time. Wehpudicabok 05:33, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

What do the following have in common?

  • Best selling single in a week (US)
  • Most Successful Act In UK Chart History
  • Biggest Selling Artist in Japan

Can I propose that all records on this page must be world achievements, and where neccessary country pages are created, for instance List of records of the UK, List of records of the USA, List of records of Japan. While this would mean that a lot of the current music records are lost, it could help lose some of the inherent POV of listings, for instance I'm sure I can find a small European country where an obscure local artist can beat the Beatles record of 20 #1's, whereas having a record of 20 US or UK number one's is a lot more verifiable and it is more clear as to what the record actually means. --Neo 10:17, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

  • 'Best Selling album by a latin artist on the BILLBOARD POP 200 List in its first week of release'

Isn't that just trying to hard to achieve a 'record'; I may as well claim to have edited the most wikipedia articles of anyone in the United Kingdom sitting in a physics department!

There are at least three things wrong here for this to be a 'world record' (I'm not trying to pick upon this fact in any sense, its just hit me as a particularly bad example) these are: i) Its genre specific - 'latin artist'; surely for something to be a record it should transcend all genres. ii) Its nation/specific agency specific - 'BILLBOARD POP 200 List'; I don't know, but I imagine this is the largest chart of the USA? Even so thats restricting the eligability for the record to one nation, and for all I know this is a chart assembled by 1 bloke in his basement from 1 record store. iii) Its time specific - this is possibly getting picky, as the fastest selling album in its first week is intersting, but *please* for a specific genre and chart its like trivia cubed - only people who are fans of the artist involved would *actually* care!

I couldn't agree more with the last two statements. Taking up the issue of Beatles #1s, they had 26 (I think) "world" #1s as some that didn't reach #1 in the UK, did in the US and visa versa.

I have just removed some records from Major League Baseball in the USA (shockingly the USA is not the world). The records were billed as "Most X in an MLB season" or similar, and while a couple of them may well have been world records, most if not all were records of MLB and not the world! After I added yesterday to this article that Spider-Man 2 and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith also grossed $200m in 8 days, and that King Kong cost $207 million to make — both of which are true — someone not only removed this information but said it was wrong. Wikipedia is always criticized because users are able to log in and edit it. I think these people are crazy, but such messages strengthen that opinion. User:gmeric13@aol.com

According to the list: Imagine by John Lennon is the "Most Performed Song Ever". What is the authority for such a claim? Can anyone can anything to the list without some kind of verification? I do not believe that "Imagine" is the 'most performed song ever', and I doubt if there is anyone who can prove that it is. I think "My Way (song)" by Paul Anka and/or Frank Sinatra is more likely to be the most performed song ever, because LycosIQ said it was the most performed song of the 20th Century, (1900's), and that seems a lot more credible.204.80.61.10 17:52, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Bennett Turk

I would have thought this honor belonged to Happy Birthday or Silent Night/We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Or if talking songs in the last 50 or so years, then maybe White Christmas(most sold under various artists),Yesterday (as most copied song according to the list), We Are The Champions (most performed at stadiums and sports events), Like a Vigin (one of most popular and badly performed at kareoke), I don't honestly think any stand out at the most performed. I'm just removing some music records to here - if people can confirm or clarify them, then please do so and return them to the main page.

'Successful' is ill defined, does it mean largest sales, highest air-play or greatest critical aclaim? Or indeed any other measure of sucess you care to mention.
Forgive my youth and ignorance - does 'Record' here mean single or album? In either case it contradicts other information on the page.

And a few facts could use some clarification:

  • Longest still existing music band: The Rolling Stones (although much lesser known group The Southlanders have actually been around for longer)
Does anyone know or a more substantial / concrete claim - I mean 'existance' is ill defined as bands can gain and lose members over time, even to the extent of having a whole new lineup. If a band has been playing in the back rooms of pubs since 1950, then would they qualify?
  • Most Awarded...
Again, can we define what an award is to qualify here - if Michael Jackson recieved twenty awards annualy from his fanclub then obviously he'll have the most awards.
  • IN GENERAL
Can people who have added records, or who know make sure that they list the record - i.e. don't assert that "Independent Women Part I", by Destiny's Child (2001) was the Longest run at #1 by a female group, without saying that this was for (in example, I don't expect this is true) 12 weeks in the US Billboard chart - doing this is really important for verifiability.

I'd like to get rid of the following records as I think they are too specific / too trivial, can people who disagree please comment, or I will remove them in the New Year. They could easily be moved to a page along the lines of Records of the Music Industry.

I am removing all those with reference to 'billboard' as these are not world records, only US records. Billboard is of course the US chart system and does not include the artists achievement sworldwide. Also removing some that, although they do not reference billboard, are actual billborad records. i.e. Artist with most debuts at No.1. The statistic provided is certainly not worldwide. Countless other artists have done the same in their respective countries, but know of no resource that says who is greatest. Westlife (UK), and Ayumi Hamasaki(Japan), are a couple that spring to mind. The specified records is also ambiguous. Albums? Singles? Most No# 1 albums - in one country/all countries? Whenever I google that record, the wikipedia page pops up, but I can't verify it anywhere else, including the hard copy of 2006 Guiness Book of World Records. [edit] Longest Stop-motion Movie

According to Guiness 2006, it's "Chicken Run". According to previous edits it's "Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-rabbit". However, here "Klay World: Off the Table" is listed. This movie is not a feature film, but a home movie made by an animator who has very often added his own information to Wikipedia. The "film" doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. It should also be noted, that not every second of this film is stop-motion, unlike with "Chicken Run" and "Wallace and Gromit" (Entirely stop-motion from start to finish). Perhaps this should be discussed.
