Talk:List of university libraries

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Let's populate this list with at least the top 50 from http://www.arl.org/stats/index/index01.pdf. --Jiang 21:40, 11 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Categories do not replace list. Redirect was reverted. The categories do not specify the institution and only convers existing articles. --`Jiang 23:26, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Fair enough.

[edit] Alphabetical order

Would anyone mind if I set this up in alphabetical order? It's a bit disorganised and incomplete at the moment. Ambi 07:04, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

it's supposed to be in order of number of volumes held.--Jiang 09:31, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
I know that's the way it started out, but I don't know that it's the most logical way of doing so. In any case, it hasn't been followed apart from the first batch added from that one site. Ambi 13:30, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
It's been followed, it's just that many of the others don't have number of volumes. But the bigger problems is, are there any sources where the "number of volumes" is calculated on a consistent basis so we can have comparable numbers, worldwide? If not, then maybe it should be changed. The other option would be a short list of "largest ones" followed by an alphabetical list. But alphabetical on the basis of what part? The first letter of the relevant Wikipedia entry? (Note that many do not yet have Wikipedia articles.) The first letter of somebody's notion of the "official" name of the library? The first letter of the name of the school? The name of the school ignoring articles and "university" and "college" and the like? That should be spelled out, too. Gene Nygaard 13:37, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
I don't think there is, which is why I'm suggesting that we switch to alphabetical. An easier way of doing it, I think, might be to take the form of:
  • University of Foo
    • Foo Library 1
    • Foo Library 2
for all of them (and follow the naming conventions you suggested). Finding the official name of the library shouldn't be much of an issue - most uni libraries have websites these days. Ambi 14:57, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

Why remove references to the number of volumes? I agree with Gene Nygaard...let's have a separate list of the top ten largest libraries. --Jiang 08:16, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

That's a great idea - and I see no need to limit it to the Top 10. It's just that this particular article isn't the place for it. Ambi 12:36, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] What is this article for?

Most universities have at least one library; some more. Is there any point to a list of upwards of several thousand? Timrollpickering 10:28, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
