In 1992, the Government of Bangladesh passed the Private Universities Act of 1992. This enabled the establishment of Private Universities in Bangladesh. Previously, only the Government was allowed to establish universities.
Among the very first and notable private universities are North South University, Independent University, Bangladesh, Asian University of Bangladesh(AUB), Darul Ihsan University, IUBAT.
In recent years, the number of private universities increased to more than 50. Unfortunately, most of them focused on profit rather than performance.
In 2004, the Education Ministry constituted a study of performance and evaluation of Private Universities of Bangladesh which recommended regulation and closure of several universities. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aditya Kabir (talk • contribs).
