[edit] Requirements for inclusion

Any song that is added to the list should have the lyrics that obviously show that it is about the "matter at hand" as an html comment (see existing edits for examples). Anything that gets added without the lyrics as a comment will be reverted. Wikibofh 03:57, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup and new policy

Ok, so I'm going to be bold here. As I go through and cleanup, if a song is not obviously about the topic "at hand" or it can not be determined, I will remove it. Any song that is added to the list should have the appropriate lyric as an html comment (see my recent edits for examples). Anything that gets added without the lyrics as a comment will be reverted. I'm not sure this list deserves the attention it is getting (ie not encyclopedic) but if we're going to do it, let's do it right. Questions, comments and criticisms welcome....and please feel free to cleanup any section, as long as you source. Wikibofh 20:49, August 29, 2005 (UTC)

I recommend splitting this into two halves. Many of these songs only mention certain activities "in passing" (e.g. Darling Nicky, Slim Shady, Perfect Kiss), and cannot be said to be "about" masturbation in the same sense that "She-Bop" etc. are. I don't know how to do a split like that and make it look good, but that's my 2 cents. In fact, maybe the cleanup that is needed is to just rm songs containing an isolated reference ... how many millions of those are there?

  • If it's obviously about it, in needs to be documented, and it can stay. If it's not, it's gone. If someone thinks it is, they can start a List of songs that might be about masturbation and put them there. IMO. Wikibofh 03:25, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Relax

I think this ought to be removed. The song is generally considered to be about anal sex, not about masturabation. It was the anal sex connotations which made it so controversial in its day.

[edit] Whip It

I am removing "Whip It" by Devo as it is not actually about masturbation. Here is a description of the song's content from the Wikipedia "Whip It" article:

"The lyrics were written by Mark Mothersbaugh in a style similar to Thomas Pynchon's poems in Gravity's Rainbow. They're a sort of mocking parody of upbeat, self-help poems. The lyrics evoke a working class desire to pull oneself up by the boot straps and to overcome adversity. The song has violent undertones, and Devo has often described it as a mockery of Ronald Reagan and his policies. However, many people took the lyrics at face value, interpreting the song as a paean to masturbation, or a reference to inhaling nitrous oxide from whipped cream cans."

[edit] Caught Up

Why was Usher's song "Caught Up" removed? The article about that song has the phrase This song was played on the radio a lot, although it is about masturbation. That clearly proves that the song's about masturbation, will you add it on again? --SuperDude 02:38, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

  • Because the online sources don't show that is a lyric. Wikibofh 04:53, September 5, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta

mine can't forget the curves of your body
and when i feel a bit naughty
i run it up the flagpole and see who salutes
that only stupid people are breeding
and i'm so hot cause i'm in hell
i'm not sick but i'm not well
and it's a sin to live so well

http://new.woxy.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-6253.html

Such is my evidence, Decide as you will, someone else made the call to remove it from the list.

  • Comments? Seems borderline to me. Wikibofh(talk) 15:07, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Yeah it's borderline, but there does seem to be a decent number of people who share the oppinion. Try listening to the song with the idea in mind. It fits in well. Cant say for sure however. There was also an artical some time ago about the songs subject, saying something to the effect of "political and physical masturbation"

[edit] Pictures of Lily added

The entry is "Pictures of Lily" by The Who- Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful/Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night. I don't see that this is obviously about masturbation. Any sources before I remove it? Wikibofh 03:51, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

I love that song... but I'd say it belongs here. Its about pictures of a particularly attractive female he got from his dad... what's that sound like to you? ;-) Redwolf24 (talk) 04:02, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
Definitely belongs here - one of the few truly verifiable songs that are definitely, unequivocally about masturbation! Graham 23:14, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
  • I don't see how it is definitively about masturbation. Depending on the age it could be simple comfort, which is why I'm skeptical. Just because it "sounds like" doesn't mean it is. Therein lies the difficulty here, and the criteria I think should be that it obviously is. So, if it's verifiable, where? :) Wikibofh 23:35, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes, verifiable. In the booklet for The Ultimate Collection by The Who it says 'Pictures of Lily takes the topic of masturbation firmly in hand'. Redwolf24 (talk—How's my driving?) 19:56, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
  • Well, that sounds like a good source and verification to me. Wikibofh 20:39, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Milkshake

I reinstated 'Milkshake'. I'm the first to eliminate songs that are not about masturbation, but this one definitely is. "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" - I mean, she's not selling strawberry or vanilla here! Ask anyone under 20 what a 'milkshake' is if you really don't believe me! Graham 23:19, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Hmmm, turns out I might be wrong after all - it is definitely a sexual reference but seems to refer more to a blowjob than a handjob... anyone like to comment?
NOTE: A handjob from somebody else is not masturbation. Masturbation is by defintion done to oneself.
  • I viewed it as breast work. I'm not sure it isn't sex versus masturbation. I have to admit, spending this kind of time and effort on this article seems ludicrous...but still, I keep doing it. :) Wikibofh 23:36, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
  • I viewed it as, well, ass-shaking.
  • It's referring to the shaking of breasts, which are the source of milk.

[edit] Articles for Deletion debate

This article survived an Articles for Deletion debate. The discussion can be found here. -Splashtalk 17:59, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

  • I added the typical old afd notice to the top, after the first one.

[edit] Epic

I have removed Epic by Faith No More. The html comment was: Rumored, but contains many non-direct refrences. Since this is a list for songs intended by their authors, without either obvious mention in the lyrics or a reputable source on the author's intentions, I don't think it should be here. Please feel free to discuss if you disagree. Wikibofh(talk) 20:25, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

    • Removed it again. Wikibofh(talk) 23:57, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Given Mike Patton's general attitude towards masturbation, I'd say the likelyhood is quite high, however I don't think he's ever likely to confirm it. Foolish Child 21:01, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

    • ...and again. Wikibofh(talk) 22:59, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Afternoon Delight

No. It's about sex. Removed. Redwolf24 (talk) 07:42, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hold on Loosely?

How is Hold on Loosely about masturbation? When the lyrics [1] are taken in their full context , I can't see how it's masturbation-related. --WhyBeNormal? c · t · m 21:56, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blister in the Sun

While I see why the lyrics might influence one to think that this song is about masturbation, "According to lead singer Gordon Gano, this song is not about masturbation as popularly thought. He wrote this song about a girl he had a crush on in high school." <---from the article on "Blister in the Sun." It seems like if anybody should know what it is about, the writer of the song should. For this reason I have removed it.

I'm having a hard time figuring how a song with the lyric "Body Beats, I stained my Sheets." isn't about masterbation.

[edit] Pink Thing

Look again at the link cited for reason of removal: http://chalkhills.org/FAQ.html#q11. First sentance says, "It's about the singer's “John Thomas," which is British slang for penis. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.131.173.148 (talkcontribs) 07:42, July 10, 2006.

Here is the whole entry:

11. To what does the song “Pink Thing” refer?
It's about the singer's “John Thomas”. It's also about a baby. Apparently Andy and Mrs Partridge referred to their baby as “The Pink Thing” and the song grew out of that nickname. As it were.

So, it's about his penis and his baby. That's still not masturbation, and not "as intended by the artist". I also can't believe I'm arguing about this subject. :) Wikibofh(talk) 13:40, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] St. Swithin's Day

While the lyric quoted in the comment is quite obviously about wanking, it's quite a stretch to say that the whole song is about masturbation. Maybe this list should be called "songs that might happen to mention something about masturbation." --LarryMac 19:16, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Down In The Park

Removed. Friend called five are the remaining humans from "The War".

[edit] Dancing with Myself

I was considering adding this song, but there seems to be multiple interpretations of what the song could mean; some say masturbation, some say it was about Japanese dance clubs with mirrors on the walls (see this page).

Sample lyrics: "With the record selection, and the mirror's reflection, I'm a dancing with myself, when there's no one else in sight, in a crowded lonely night, well I wait so long for my love vibration, and I'm dancing with myself".

Hopefully someone can find a more reliable source as to what the song is really supposed to be about, and whether it should be included. --uber-h

There is also the line "I looked all over the world, and there's every type of girl, but your empty eyes seem to pass me by, and leave me dancing with myself". I'd personally interpret that line to be about masturbation. --Kurt Shaped Box 11:14, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Girls of Porn

Surely this is more about pornography than masturbation, even if it does explicitly mention masturbation a few times? Foolish Child 21:03, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

It is about porn, but I think it mentions masturbation enough to qualify for this list.
All the lines that mention masturbation:
"The urge is too much to take / All I can think about is playing with myself / It's time to masturbate / I've got my Hustler and I don't need nothing else / My hand gets tired and my dick gets sore / But the girls of porn want more / So I flip through the pages one more time / And I just let the jism fly"
"Ain't got no woman next to me / I just got this magazine / And what's on the TV screen / But that's okay with me"
--uber-h

[edit] La Vie Boheme

I hardly think that one line "Mucho masturbation!" merits inclusion in this list.

[edit] Joan Osborne - Right Hand Man

Joan Osborne's - "Right Hand Man" should be added to this list. Album: "Relish" (1995) -- Stagolee

I looked up the lyrics, and there doesn't seem to be anything obviously about masturbation (the title isn't enough). Do you have some other source to back this up? --uber-h

[edit] She Don't Use Jelly

It has been years since I last heard this The Flaming Lips hit, but I don't remember anything about masturbation in it. The three verses are about a woman who puts Vaseline on toast, a man who blows his nose with magazines, and a woman who uses tangerines to dye her hair orange. Am I missing something?

[edit] Accuracy

I'm not sure what the point is. Is this songs about masturbating, or songs that have references to masturbating? Because that's what the list seems to be complied of. Ohyeahmormons 21:51, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Ought to be "about" not "referencing". Feel free to clean them up. I have no problem with this list getting shorter. It's enough work just keeping the cruft out. Wikibofh(talk) 22:54, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
  • I agree, a lot of these songs mention masturbation but are not about masturbation. I think these should be removed, but want more opinions on the matter. Bakilas 03:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Give Peace a Chance - John Lennon

Its not about masturbation, it only briefly mentions the word. Can I delete it?

[edit] Sugar, We're Going Down- Fall Out Boy

I swear I've listened to that song ten billion times. It's not about wanking. Deleted.Calum Smith 15:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Someone's delete-happy

I entered three songs clearly, distinctly and entirely about masturbation and someone (coughwikibofhcough) saw fit to delete them. The songs in dispute are Be Stiff, Auto-Manipulator, and The Big M. If *someone* had bothed to listen or read the lyrics to these songs (hell, just look at the titles!) they would immediately recognise the songs' subject matter. Dignified loser 17:00 January 1st 2007

  • Let us know when you feel like actually including the lyrics as a source, as clearly stated, defined and layed out in every single section. Rolled back. Wikibofh(talk) 23:15, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

I guess I didn't realize it was so difficult to look up lyrics on the internet....so here:

Be Stiff by Devo - "Go solo no no twos and Deep sleepers jerk the root" Auto-Manipulator by Crispin Glover - "I'm an auto-manipulator, I play with myself, I'm a masturbator" Big M by Lust Control - "Masturbation is artificial sex"

I hope that's sufficient.

  • It isn't. Put them into inline commments, like I did for 80% of this list. Wikibofh(talk) 03:46, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

I fucking did! Didn't you even look before you deleted it?

  • Per history, it looks like you realized that a bunch of other crap without comments was also being added. Removed one other one that has crept back in. DLs edits are intact. Wikibofh(talk) 00:06, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About or Referencing?

Many of these songs are about multiple things, not just masturbation(ie Captain Jack and Flagpole Sitta, both of which cover multiple topics"

So should we start include all songs that reference masturbation, or just those only about masturbation?

  • I think it should be "about" which means a majority of these should go. However, I don't have the energy to do it. Takes enough time just getting rid of the cruft and unsourced material. Wikibofh(talk) 02:51, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DARE

Gorillaz's "DARE" is not about masturbation, and is in fact, nonsensical (in that it has no "subject"). There is no evidence in the video, and evidence in the lyrics that is only "there" if that is how it is interpereted. This song has only been interpereted as being about Sex, Suicide, attempting suicide, drug (ab)use, and killing, among other things, humans, plants and other mammals. IT is none of these things. Suggest removal. Tar7arus 17:02, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Extacy

Changed title of "Xtacy" by Brian Austin Green to it's correct title "Extacy" and moved it to the "E" section. Also hyperlinked his name to the Wikipedia article on him. Source: http://www.amazon.com/One-Stop-Carnival-Brian-Green/dp/B000002ATQ among others. This song just references masturbation in the lyrics as: “I’m down to grab a girl backstage and toss her, but if that shit don’t happen, then i’m down to play the source and self-ejaculation.” Not sure if that qualifies this song for inclusion based on previous discussions, but since it was listed by someone else, I'm not gonna remove it. BTW, He dropped his middle name "Austin" from his professional name in 1996. If I did anything wrong in this edit, please tell me, since it's my first attempt. I appreciate feedback. Thanks Becksguy 15:28, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
