Talk:List of notable drug culture figures

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"...persons who are well-known specifically from their use, research into or advocacy of non-medicinal, psychoactive drugs. It is not a list of notable people who have used drugs."

I removed a bunch notable people who have used drugs. Musician category still has some questionable entries, but I don't know the bands well enough to justify removing them. I'm not sure that the Philosopher category includes anybody relevant, but it does have a reference.

This is inherently a pretty subjective list. What defines notable? Definately not just being famous and arrested for, photographed doing, or admitting to drug use. I could see the musician, actor and athlete categories including those who: are strong advocates of legalization (e.g. Harrelson); have a largely "drug cultural" fan base (e.g. Phish, Cheech and Chong), or whose own drug use is: mentioned frequently, portrayed as a positive experience, or an important part of their public image (Willie Nelson, Cypress Hill, Bob Marley).

Or should this just be "notable figures" within drug (sub)culture? Honestly, if you asked me to think of Athletes+Drugs, Dock Ellis would be the first name I'd come up with. But he's pretty esoteric. As are most of the Researchers and Writers. Writers is really the only category with any historical depth.

I think Steve Jobs should be added, since he claims one of the most important things in his life is him taking LSD.
