I must say that this page doesn't seem to serve much purpose. There's a whole heap of players and coaching staff in the league, and I'm more than willing to bet that every single one of them has nickname, even if it's just something boring like the ones listed for Nathan Burke and Mark Bolton. Of course, I don't doubt that there are interesting nicknames around, but those worthy of mention ought to go into the player's bio.

Maybe this can be changed into a history of club nicknames and their origins, if there's enough fascinating stuff on that to warrant it. --Omdal 04:43, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

I think that some of the less creative nicknames (for example "Bolts" for Bolton) should be scrapped. Also a short explanation behind the nickname would be good. --Jabso 10:21, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Aussie rules slang

Should be moved to a new article Rogerthat Talk 11:33, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm Bold enough to do it. DaGizzaChat © 11:53, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Verifying the nicknames

Can anybody verify all these nicknames. Perhaps we now need sources for them even though it is a fairly trivial page. There are so many which seem "dodgy". DaGizzaChat © 09:36, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Like I said I think they all should have explanations and the simple ones like "Burnsy" should go. Jabso 07:30, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
I think it's fairly hard to source these nicknames, unless people's word is accounted for (something I doubt Wikipedia will accept...) Most are fairly well known to the majority, whilst I do think the more obvious ones (Burnsy etc) shouldn't be on here... 203.51.159.168 08:05, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Football and AFL are so well reported in the web media, can I suggest the following policy: From now on ALL additions MUST have an in-line web citation, else revert on sight. -- I@ntalk 09:09, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

See section =A= and editors comment. -- I@ntalk 13:41, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Agree with Ian - I note that there was a story recently about the Kangaroos either playing a game, or at the very least training in, guernseys that carried every players' nick name on the back. These are to be sold as merchandising. So at a minimum, we should have no problem with all of the nicknames of present day Kangaroo players. That aside, the footy record and similar publications often do player profiles that invariably show the players' nick name - verification is not an issue (filling up the bottom of the article with a couple of hundred references might be). ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 02:23, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
I wouldn't want to see a great big references section at the bottom. In-line links would be better here. -- I@ntalk 03:08, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
What about the nicknames from 1998? For example you'd be hard pressed to find much info at all on Sudjai Cook but Sandy Roberts cited his nickname "The Chef" on numerous occassions on Channel Seven. Rogerthat Talk 05:58, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Re "The Chef", have you seen it used any where else or by other people (that is notSandy Roberts)?--blue520 09:47, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

I don't know how people will feel about this, but can I also suggest the remove of all the redlinked player/nickname list members. A player should have a article before being part of the list, as with out one from the point of view of a reader with no to limited knowledge of the AFL it is just a name and a nickname. One the article has been written then the player can be included, if verification can be shown.--blue520 08:51, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree with the removal of all redlinked and uncited entries. By the way, Rex Hunt's website would be OK as a citation for many of these. It just needs someone to do the dirty work and get editing! -- I@ntalk 06:53, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
and this -- I@ntalk 07:05, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Is there any thing wrong with using http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/biographies.htm as a citation source? it may be good fror older players.--blue520 11:41, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't see anything wrong with that or any other website for citations in an article of this type, as long as its not a mirror of Wikipedia. The main thing is to avoid original research. -- I@ntalk 13:41, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

I have tried to provide citations for the remaining uncited nicknames and I can see other editors have tried also to do so, the remaining uncited entries should be removed as unverifiable and I will start doing so soon, unless some one strongly opposes.--blue520 10:20, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

I've removed all the uncited entries. They can still be found here, if anyone wants to work on them. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 00:45, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Useful

I think this is pretty useful, and shouldn't be merged or deleted. There were some names in there I've sort of heard before but never took notice of this. So I know this has been put up for deletion, and is now up for merging, IMO it should stay.

[edit] A question of a matter of taste?

Should the Adam Hunter link here be resolved?

[edit] Alternate proposal

It seems to me that, if a person were looking for a player's nickname, the first place they would go would be to that player's page. A generic list of nicknames seems a little pointless, leading me to believe that this page should be removed. Secondly, if this page stays, the players should be grouped by teams before being grouped alphabetically - a fan would be more likely to want to know their own team's nicknames, rather than any others. [edit] Rex Hunt nicknames

We have to keep Rex Hunt nicknames separate to real nicknames. Hunt calls Andrew Walker 1AW, but everyone else calls him Tex, and Hunt calls Bret Thornton Bad Santa, but everyone else calls him T-Bird.

Rex Hunt nicknames are interesting for the novelty factor, and a dedicated page for an alphabetical listing of them would be an interesting reference, but they have to be seen as separate to a player's real nickname. Players' real nicknames are a less interesting reference (as stated above in "Altenate Proposal"), and I don't see any need to compile them outside of individual players' pages.
