[edit] professional and amateur teams
I hope the aim of this article is only professional soccer teams? In The Netherlands (and yes we call it voetbal, (or football), but i lived in the states for a year) we have multiple amateur teams in each town, so mentioning all those seems a bit superfluous.
I'm no soccer expert - just mentioned the dutch ones I could come up with. There are more.

- I'd suggest that only top-level teams should be on this list (which could still stretch to over 1000 clubs) - the separate List of Dutch Football League teams can list all the lower-division clubs. sjorford 15:07, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)
-
- For this reason I have removed the Welsh clubs playing in England section, none of them are top flight sides (although they are all stronger than the teams in the League of Wales).
-
-
- For countries with thousands of teams, the national lists could list the teams in the main professional leagues, with links to the league articles for amateur sides. (The teams in the pro leagues could also have a show/hide feature which would also reduce the article length. Ygoloxelfer 21:40, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] title
Since Aus , Can and the US call different sports football shouldn't this be moved to list of Association football teams or football (soccer) teams?

[edit] Main article links
The majority of these links seemed to point to List of football clubs in XXXX, so I redirected the one or two that didn't.
As to the above point, i'd support it being moved to either Association football or Football (soccer). However, all other similar articles (list of national football teams, football in XXX etc.) use only the word 'football'. Grunners 19:07, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Move to List of football clubs
I will move this list to the more proper name List of football clubs (link currently redirects here, note the last word) if no objections are raised within a few days. My reason for this is that the list is in fact about clubs and not teams. Each of the listed entries may field several teams, youth teams, reserve teams, and so on. -- Elisson | Talk 2 July 2005 21:53 (UTC)
- I agree, plus the fact that Argentina national football team is a team yet not a club. --Mariano July 4, 2005 08:36 (UTC)
[edit] top league
I disagree with Johan Elisson's rationale in his past revert of my edit to the .hr section, because some first-league clubs are transient and not notable enough, and because the rest of the page clearly doesn't consistently follow that purported rule listed at the top. And besides, if we have pages for the individual first leagues of some countries, why have this redundant list at all, why not simply link those pages? --Joy [shallot] 10:44, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Worth splitting?
This is now an enormous page. Do people think it might be worth being subdivided onto two or more pages, maybe a European league clubs page and a Rest of the World league clubs page? Or maybe even a page for each confederation, although that might be a little excessive? Starfighter Pilot 20:18, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
- Now, the page is even more enormous. Let's split European part off. What would be the good name for it? List of football clubs in Europe? List of football clubs (UEFA)? Conscious 12:42, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- List of football (soccer) clubs in Europe? It would then be consistent with the title of this article. UEFA would be mentioned / defined in the lead to explain the presence of Israel, Kazakhstan etc. Oldelpaso 18:36, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's not necessary to mention soccer, because I don't know any countries in Europe where this word is used for the game. Conscious 18:49, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Why only Europe? I know it is the biggest chunk, but won't it be a bit inconsistent to have all other countries listed, and Europe having only a link to another list? -Aabha (talk) 19:03, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
Isn't there a natural break down available just by listing only the continents (and Oceania) on the first page? That'll give you six pages of a more manageable size that can share a common format and some header notes. Only five pages if Oceania gets lumped together with CONCACAF, for example. After that, if necessary, there may well be other logical divisions within larger pages, maybe as simple as Europe (A-M), Europe (N-Z)? Anybody should be able to follow that sort of progression. Wiggy! 21:25, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, it looks to me that what's remained is still too large. Conscious 05:48, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- I agree - split off the other continents too; it doesn't seem fair to do it just to Europe. Qwghlm 16:35, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Qwghlm to a certain extent. Yes, the list IS becoming large but NOT big enough yet to warrant the list to be split among the 6 continents. Once the list becomes huge (for example contaning about 300-400 clubs), this list has to be split. The list has a potential to be one of the biggest articles in Wikipedia if All football nations are included (207 members) and the relevent clubs are added. [edit] List of clubs or list of lists?
At the WP:FAID page, it was suggested that this links to individual clubs be removed from this page and this page turned into a list of lists of clubs by country.
Arguments for this include:
- The list of clubs is too long
- The list of clubs needs to be maintained as clubs are promoted to / relegated from top divisions
Arguments against this include:
- The very purpose of list of clubs is to have all links in one page
- The list of clubs is useful reference for editors for linking clubs' articles
I personally think that it's better to keep it as it stands. If the list feels too long, it can be split by confederation. Updates are needed only twice a year, in the beginning of the autumn-spring and spring-autumn seasons. On the other hand, it'd also be useful to create a Category:Lists of football (soccer) clubs by country and put all country-level lists there. Conscious 09:40, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
- We do have Category:Football (soccer) clubs that lists clubs by country.
- This article here currently lists clubs only from the top division of each country, and if that status quo is to be maintained, I think we need to rename the article accordingly. The title List of football (soccer) clubs is not fit IMO in that case. -Aabha (talk) 12:52, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
- I meant a slightly different thing about categories. Cat:Football (soccer) clubs contains national subcategories. Cat:Lists of football (soccer) clubs by country would contain lists. Conscious 13:51, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Isle of Man
I don't think all the Isle of Man teams should be listed on this page, as the Isle of Man is not a member of FIFA or UEFA. Perhaps just a link to List of football clubs in the Isle of Man, and the same for anywhere else which has a league but isn't a FIFA member. Oldelpaso 19:49, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it's not a list of football clubs affiliated with FIFA. Should stay, I think, but maybe it's worth noting in the section. Conscious 08:36, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Regional Leagues
Some countries, such as Senegal and Iraq, have leagues divided by region even at their highest level. What should we do with these? Oldelpaso 19:33, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- List all clubs... unless they are too many. See Indonesia section (2 regions, 28 teams total). Conscious 20:17, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- By the way... What's that article on fr:? Conscious 20:20, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- Football dans le monde, the fr: version of Football (soccer) around the world, which links to many useful articles with the format Championnat du (pays) de football. Oldelpaso 20:32, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Separate page for South America
Now that the list for CONMEBOL is complete, what about splitting it to a separate page, just like with Europe? Conscious 07:37, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I was going to suggest the same thing. Oldelpaso 09:51, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good idea to me, that way the article will be 'cleaner' and easy to navigate Bruno18 06:57, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Is the name List of top-division football clubs in CONMEBOL countries OK? (like List of top-division football clubs in UEFA countries) Conscious 04:45, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
- Given that the UEFA list has set a precendent and is a featured list, it is the logical title. It would be inaccurate to use the term South America due to the absence of Guyana etc. Oldelpaso 17:36, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
- Agree with Bruno18. It is a good idea as this article is getting too big. --Siva1979Talk to me 14:23, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Removal of information
203.164.184.*, please stop removing the information from the list. While "standardising" you have removed information about the cities the clubs are from. I'd appreciate if you helped with the list and created tables for all other countries, and filled in the cities. Conscious 05:22, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- The tables in MHO are silly. There is no proper information on a city — a city's name is not information — if you feel the tables and city's names are warrented then fill in all the fields for ALL the confederation's clubs yourself. By having the majority of the article as dot points and one with tables makes the article messy. So I will remove the table formatting until the other confederations are altered. 203.164.184.223 05:57, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- Have you seen List of top-division football clubs in CONMEBOL countries and featured List of top-division football clubs in UEFA countries? That's how this list should ultimately look like. Conscious 06:06, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- Then do it for the rest of the confederations in the list, instead leaving it the way it is, messy and unsightful with dot points here and tables there. 203.164.184.223 06:13, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- You cannot order us to do anything. Please help with completing the task. And don't ruin the others' work. And yes, people are going to do what you suggest. Conscious 06:15, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not ordering you to do anything, I'm suggesting that you should alter the rest, and then do a global change, so there is no messiness in the article. 203.164.184.223 06:22, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

- Are you arguing for the exclusion of cities from the list? Conscious 11:05, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- No, I've changed my mind after thinking about it. I'm arguing that if you're going to use tables, use tables for all of the conferations in the list rather than just one. Most of the cities can be guessed from the club names, for example Melbourne Victory is from Melbourne, but I do realise that with some clubs the city's name cannot be deduced from its name. 203.164.184.107 11:55, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
