[edit] Notability and AfD
It was suggested that I nominate this for AfD due to the fact that most of the AD&D classes are in their own articles (as a notable game), and the other games aren't notable, or could have their class listings in their own articles.
I am holding off on this because I wish to know why half the games/classes in this list are notable in an encyclopedia. Pyrogen 22:45, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
I don't think Soldier should be a class. That was a name that was given to him by fan of sites. This site is suppose to have official information, and that isn't it. So I think it should be deleted.
Everything I've found on races/classes in DnD edition 1 through 3.5 says that hobbits/halflings, elves, and dwarves are not classes. Though I don't have one of the original three 1st ed. core books handy, my 1E Greyhawk regards them as they do humans, separately from classes; same goes for rec.games.frp.dnd FAQ and this D&D White Box review. --Mrwojo 14:07, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Now that I've peeked at an older basic D&D player manual, I'll answer my own question: demi-humans were considered classes. --Mrwojo 18:31, 16 Dec 2003 (UTC)

- Yup, common knowledge amongst some of us old-time gamers. :) D&D had elves, etc. as classes, it wasn't until AD&D that they were broken off as races and classes became non-race-specific (except for the odd class, like Paladin). --Dante Alighieri | Talk 21:43, Mar 21, 2004 (UTC)
This page can't be considered complete without mentioning nethack at some point. :)
Anyway, I started to divide up the huge Final Fantasy list by game - by memory, though, so I may be wrong in names. In particular, I don't remember/know what the English translations were for each game (Final Fantasy V in particular, since I never played the English version). Minor characters and their classes are also mostly forgotten.

Please, do NOT just delete the kanji I added unless you find that they are wrong and change them to the RIGHT ones. If you see what looks like gibberish in the editing area, leave that gibberish alone - those are the kanji.

[edit] Concerns and a plan for this list
I'm concerned about the length and usefulness of this list.
Length: This list is long, but it doesn't begin to cover even just the popular games. Also the content of the page suggests that it is RPGs only, but the title would seem to include other games with classes, such as some first-person shooters.
Usefulness: Many of the links in the list are to irrelevant (such as clown) or mostly irrelevant articles, and at the same time nearly all articles on specific character classes are stubs or substubs that are specific to a single game/series (see most of the Final Fantasy character class articles or Fighter (D&D)).
Class: What about the empath class? At least two games that I know of use this class. I bet there are also other things missing. Ie. the highly disputed names of the four sub-classes of elementalism (water, fire, earth, air elementalist classes like Hydromancy, Pyromancy, and some other Greek words)
Proposal:
- Break the current contents of this list into more manageable articles that serve individual games or game series by creating "Character classes of Dungeons & Dragons", "Character classes of Final Fantasy", and so on. Such pages can include more information about the classes, such as the way Spells of Dungeons & Dragons and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time characters aren't just lists.
- Merge/redir game-specific character class articles into those more general articles. (If a "Classes of" article becomes too big then split it into individual articles. I hope that doesn't happen since we shouldn't be going that in-depth on the specific mechanics of an individual game.)
- Keep the articles on classes that appear in multiple games as-is and make sure they cover the variety of games. Make changes as appropriate (Fighter (D&D) should be at Fighter (character class)).
This page will end up being much smaller and a number of "going nowhere" substubs and stubs will be merged into more meaningful articles.
Yay/nay? If there are no objections I'll do this in a few days. --Mrwojo 23:16, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- After some editing, I've decided that converting this list into a list of games with character classes would be easier and perhaps have better results (by encouraging articles to discuss their game's use of character classes instead of just creating more lists). --Mrwojo 17:00, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I'd support the per-game or similar ones, myself. To cover D&D and its kin, maybe a Character classes of the d20 System? Sukael 01:53, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- ...except that earlier versions of D&D wouldn't be included in that. heh. Maybe Character classes of Dungeons & Dragons for just D&D and then Character classes of the d20 System for all the d20 games too small to have their own lists?
- And then there's always the possibility of just deleting all the D&D stuff and instead linking to Character class (Dungeons & Dragons)

- Well, this article is called list of character classes right? why don't you guys put a general list of classes from all games? that way, and put generally what games this class was used in, or put a small description under the class what this class is generally depicted as? eg. Warrior- mostly in physical, and hardly uses magic. Generally, he uses melee weapons. Mage- a magic user. he mostly uses staffs and wands. in some games, he can wield books, daggers...
i hope you guys know what i mean...

- I say we just chop up all the game specific classes and put them in separate articles. The List of character classes article should only have a general overview of some common game classes and links to game specific classes. --The Dark Side 19:59, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

- Moved all the Dragon Quest stuff to Character classes from the Dragon Quest series. --The Dark Side 02:29, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] This list is way too long
As the subject suggests, this article is too long. While it lists everything, people would look for the information with something similar of the this format: "Character classes of (game name)". So I am suggesting that this list be seperated into diffrent articles.
With that said, update the Fire Emblem class list. It is out of date. Typer525 Talk 00:11, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Planning to shorten the list
This list is WAY too long. Many of the entries already have seperate articles - for example, everything under the D&D sections are already covered in one of our many D&D related articles.
If no one objects, i'm going to go ahead and do some massive cutting from this article, and add some links to direct people to more specific articles (e.g. the D&D section will have a link to the main article of D&D character classes). --`/aksha 03:40, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
