[edit] Major overhaul (December 1, 2006)

I'm anticipating some feedback from users based in UP regarding the changes I've made on this page, and it may be possible that some of them are new to Wikipedia. It is for them that I write this not-so-short note:

First, I removed the list from the main UP Diliman article. Then this: I've overhauled the entire article by first grouping similar organizations, and then arranging them in rough alphabetical order. (As you can see, since the abbreviation UP appears almost always, I've ignored this abbreviation in alphabetizing the entire article, so if you're planning to add a UP Diliman-based organization, please keep this in mind.)

More importantly, I trimmed the list by removing the descriptions that originally came with these organizations. This is what I'd want to discuss the most, for very good reasons. I understand that some of the original contributors to the list added these to describe their own organizations (most of the edits were from anonymous IP addresses) and for me to delete these might offend these people. However, please understand that Wikipedia is not a soapbox. By this, we mean that Wikipedia is not the place to promote your own group, or for boosting your own organization's cause. I respect people's freedom of expression, and I will not contest that. However, although Wikipedia is often touted as the free encyclopedia, please keep in mind that this definition is, more or less, similar to the GPL definition of free (i.e. "'free' as in freedom, 'free' as in beer"). And on Wikipedia, the noncommercial definition of "free" must be considered in light of two things:

1. The Five Pillars, and all policies under it; and
2. Wikipedia is not a democracy (but it isn't even the opposite)

Another reason for de-Wikifying some of the original links (made with double square brackets [[ ]] ) is to reduce the number of red links on the article. Only those organizations with their own Wikipedia articles will successfully appear as blue links (for example, the Philippine Collegian has its own article, though the article needs a lot of improvement---more on this later). In lieu of this, if your organization has its own website, you may decide to make a blue link based on your organization's web site. Here's how you would do it:

[http://www.yourwebsite.org Description of the website]

(Remember, however, that this is not an absolute, and other editors may decide to remove the link themselves.)

Please keep the descriptions short, simple and as neutral as possible. Essentially, what we want is to avoid having this article deleted. For starters, I've made the summaries to be more or less like this (this is just a fictitious example, so please don't flame me for this):

UP Widgets Association - based on the UP College of Widgets, an association for BS Widgets Science majors

Let us help keep this---and other UP-related articles---as encylopedic as possible.

Speaking of...a lot of UP articles need a lot of cleaning up. Some articles have room for expansion, some need extensive copywriting, some need citations and references. Hi there. I'm new to Wikipedia, so I may have unknowingly made some editing boo-boos somewhere... I have read parts of the Help page, but I hope you agree that it's all too much to take in at one time. I've been making a few minor edits to articles here and there, and overhauled the Philippine Collegian page. I think it still lacks information, but at least now it's not completely devoid of references. Hopefully someone out there who knows more about the Kûle will flesh it out even more. [edit] "UP Association for Computing Machinery"

May future editors take note that there is no org named "UP Association for Computing Machinery". The organization has always been named "Association for Computing Machinery - UP Student Chapter", which is the correct format followed by student chapters worldwide of the ACM. To mistakenly rename the org in a reputable source of information such as Wikipedia is a travesty to the ACM and the org itself. Thank you. -- Corsarius 21:01, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
