Talk:List of Suikoden V characters
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yes, I know that the article size warning is going off on this page, but don't forget that some of that length is references, and I think that keeping it all on one page is good for coherence and preventing some sections from getting even longer. I was tempted to not merge in the Gizel Godwin page, as it's pretty long... but it should really be Gizel & Marscal & various other people doing most of that, so it didn't seem right to keep it all at Gizel's page.
Anyway, the Prince and Sialeeds still have their own articles (despite only appearing in Suiko V); the page is big enough I don't see them getting merged in. Speaking of the Prince, I referred to him as the Prince in general since... that's how he's called in game.
Some lengths are still a bit weird. Logg & Lun could definitely have a longer section so feel free to expand, but they didn't have articles, while some other sections are a bit bloated. Also, Georg's article looks like it could use some work. Lastly, any out-of-universe information would probably be appreciated, since the current article is a little heavy on the in-universe parts. I added some voice actors, but there's probably more that could be done.
Lastly, as at the Suiko III page, please modify section headers with care, since various redirects and links are headed to them. It's fine to, say, expand out Logg, Lun, & Kisara to their own section, but then be sure to go repoint the links at 108 Stars of Destiny, for instance. SnowFire 07:48, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Also, can anyone elaborate on why Ferid is speculated to be Skald's son? It's easy to cite that this is in fact thought from Suikosource or the like, but they don't explain why they think that, which would be the interesting part. I marked some other merged parts with "citation needed;" while it makes sense and is probably likely that Lucretia's fan is an homage to Zhuge Liang, for instance, that really needs a cite to not be developer mind-reading. - The 108 Stars of Destiny guide for Suikoden V released by Konami explicitly says in Skald's page that Ferid is his firstborn son. It's not even just speculation, it's stated blatantly.
- By the way, same guide that lists the Falenan Royal Family as having the surname "Falenas", which is the reasoning behind my edits. I gave up on uploading the damn thing to imageshack, so I hope a link to Sagubooru won't cause trouble: [1] Ephyon 01:58, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

- Interesting, and nice expansion on Belcoot. As for Ferid / Skald, go ahead and add that in then! Don't have the book myself, so I wouldn't know what to stick in the ref tag.
-
- As for Falenas... I knew beforehand that "Falenas" was the surname given in the Japanese versions, but eh, it got localized out for the U.S. version... with good reason, mind, what with European royalty not sharing the name of the country. Eh, I'm a sort who strongly prefers the use of official translations myself; I'm fine with mentioning the Falenas bit in the article, but wouldn't really be in favor of its usage as headers which are the English names. - Edit: Switched back headers for now. Again, not averse to perhaps using Falenas if the consensus is so, but for right now, internal links and redirects won't work if the headers are changed. SnowFire 02:52, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Split
We probably need to do some splitting here. Some of the more fleshed out character should be moved to individual pages with only a brief description on this page. As things are now they are a little bit messy. (Djungelurban 17:15, 12 February 2007 (UTC))
- Yes, this is a big article... but Suikoden V was a big game, yet not a hugely notable one unfortunately (at least in the US- I think it sold <50,000 copies stateside? It did sell 300K or so in Japan, though.). Most of the character articles had gone silent without much in the way of updating; this makes it harder to justify an article for each character on a comparatively minor game. Consolidating everything here should make maintenance much easier, with of course the exception of characters who appeared in multiple Suikodens (and the Prince and Sialeeds); that's been the trend in other parts of the CVG project as well, better one reasonably sized article than 20 tiny articles. Plus, there's no shame in long list articles. List of storms in the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season is a featured list, and it's of comparable length.
- If we did split, what would we split off? The only good choices in my mind- sections with more than a page - are Arshtat, the Godwin family, and the Barows family. I guess you could make an argument for Lyon or Lucretia as well, but eh, their section is at about the perfect length and fine for a list article. Arshtat provides some backstory to this page that isn't mere repetition of the events of the game like some other sections, and furthermore only directly interacts with the first part of the game, so she seems more appropriate for a list article (compare to Sialeeds, who has a major backstory and massively interacts with the game). The Godwin and Barows sections were based off the articles at Gizel Godwin and Luserina Barows, but breaking down their actions by character seems problematic. Marscal and Gizel are a team - to separate them into their own articles would result in a lot of repeated information. And creating an article called "Godwin faction" would feel artificial. Yes, their section is long, but if anything, keeping it here on this page will help keep it from bloating any further and perhaps encourage people to trim it down. The Barows are somewhat more reasonable to separate by character, but there's still repeated information, and their section is shorter anyway.
- Since I chatted with them recently over the SuikoIII character list article, I'll drop a note over at the CVG assessers and see what they think. SnowFire 18:56, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Split off some of the sections you yourself named, but keep a short summary of the article in here, see United States for a good example on how to do that. I assessed the article for WP:CVG and it's B class. I increased the priority to Mid.
-
- Once some of the big sections are split, and some of the articles better wikified, this could easily become a featured list.

- I'm familiar with how to do summary style, as you'll note from the parts of the article that are separated off to main sections. But any comment from anyone on the issues I brought up as to why this might be a problematic idea? Lists are specifically mentioned as an exception to normal article size guidelines at WP:LENGTH... Seeing nothing else, and no one actually splitting, I'm removing the split tag. The length of this page is comparable to List of Final Fantasy Tactics characters and List of Final Fantasy X characters, games of comparable size. And the FFT list doesn't do any splitting off at all, while this list still has Sialeeds & the Prince as possible merge candidates. Not saying that someone can't split Gizel or the like off again later of course, but no need to have the split tag on top... SnowFire 07:36, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
