[edit] by highway number

why is the highway distriubution by state an not by the number or length of the highway?? Can national expressway be included in this section? Kaushal mehta 14:13, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Kaushal mehta. Logically, I think, the highways should be ordered by number and not by the state. However, the NHAI website doesnt give info about highways ordered by number. Is there an easier way / alterante source to get this? Once a listing based on numbers is done, we can then give links to highway numbers so that specific articles about the highways can be created / updated. The List of Interstate Highways page can serve as a reference for us. -Natrajdr 05:37, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
I have the excel file having list of national highways number wise (it have following columns 'Highway#', 'Route' and 'length in state' and it was lifted from http://www.mapsofindia.com/driving-directions-maps but now that link doesn't work), but how to pass on that xls file to you. Vjdchauhan 11:13, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Amazing !! Can you pls mail to email ID removed --Natrajdr 11:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Vjdchauhan. Got the file!! -- Natrajdr 06:18, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Now I have a wiki table listing all the NH and their lengths. Equipped with that, I'd like to change the layout of this page so that listing is sorted by the NH number. The existing information on the sorting by states can be moved to a new page and linked to the current one. I feel that would be a better representation than the current one. Also, I'd request somebody good with templating skills to create a infobox template for NHs. What do you think... --Natrajdr 18:13, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] copyvio

The material copied here was from an official Indian Government website (Ministry of Road Transport) and is in the public domain according to India's Right to Information act PlaneMad|YakYak 15:33, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

I think so too, but it would be best to confirm with users Nichalp and Sundar.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91(review me!) 20:13, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
The material is only information and nothing close to prose. Information can never be copyrighted, even less so in the light of Right to information act. Just copy the HTML table and use a converter to get wikimarkup. Feel free to use a wikitable here and add some prose around that giving context. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:46, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Improvement

Ambuj has done a good job of converting it to wikitables. I've refactored some text from Indian Highways and created a lead section. If someone wikifies the table and adds some references, it'll be good. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 14:05, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Next steps

Planemad and Ambuj, good work with wikification of the list. Perhaps it's time we sought a Peer review to bring it upto a featured list status? -- Sundar \talk \contribs 10:30, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I would say that featured list is a far cry. Let's first sort out the spellings and other issues in the article before moving it to Peer Review. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:34, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

The red links in this articles should be redirects to either one of User:Ganeshbot/Created or one of User:Ganeshbot/Not created. I've made some redirects, more need to be done. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 09:58, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

There are numerous typos to be fixed on the page as well. This list needs to be given special importance as it has links to a vast number of small towns which could be orphaned otherwise -- PlaneMad|YakYak 13:51, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Not all of them are typos, but "alternative spellings." Given that they were found in a central government document as such, we need to create redirects from these titles to existing articles, and not just "fix typos". That way, we'll ensure that someone searching the web using an alternative spelling can still get to the article she's looking for. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 03:57, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Some of the spellings given in this page are not popularly used (Eg. Kotamangalam given in the page against the more popularly used Kothamangalam). Since the previous post says that these spellings are what is used by the Govt agency, I've made the links(only in Kerala section) to point to the correct topics without changing the displayed names. If we have an agreement, we can change the names to the popularly used names for display as well. Comments...--GurufromIndia 12:15, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
A better option would be to create redirects as Sundar said. Ive made the redirects for the concerned places that you have changed, Edapalli Kotamangalam Sultan Battery and Kanjirapalli - PlaneMad|YakYak 14:37, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
If that seems to be the consensus, I’ll stick to the same too. --GurufromIndia 15:29, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Once redirects are made, the links on this page are automatically changed by bots to avoid redirects, so we end up with the commonly used name on the list as well - PlaneMad|YakYak 15:33, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh yeah, I didn't think about that. I've done some redirects yesterday, more later. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:17, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sortable wikitable

I wanted to implement the new sortable wikitable in this list. Please look at the sample at User:Planemad/sandbox and give your comments -- PlaneMad|YakYak 12:06, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing numbers

Can someone try to find out where NH 225 has disappeared? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 13:05, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect suggestions

Hi, I agree with Planemad's comment above that by adding appropriate redirects, we can make User:Ganeshbot's work more meaningful. In fact, we need more such lists/articles that make use of towns' articles. I wrote a little throwaway Perl script that would suggest some redirects. Please start creating the redirects where applicable from the following suggestions.

If anyone's interested in the dirty script that I wrote, you can find it below:

use strict;
my ($articles,$links) = @ARGV;
open(ART,$articles);
open(LNK,$links);
my %sArt;
while(<ART>)
{
 chomp;
 my $essence = $_;
 $essence =~ s/[a e i o u h]//g;
 $essence =~ s/[t d]/t/g;
 $essence =~ s/(\w)\1+/$1/;
 $essence =~ s/(\w)\1+/$1/;
 push @{$sArt{$essence}}, $_;
}

while(<LNK>)
{
 chomp;
 print $_, " - ";
 my $src = $_;
 my $essence = $_;
 $essence =~ s/[a e i o u h]//g;
 $essence =~ s/[t d]/t/g;
 $essence =~ s/(\w)\1+/$1/;
 $essence =~ s/(\w)\1+/$1/;
 if($sArt{$essence})
 {
  my @suggestions = @{$sArt{$essence}};
  foreach my $sug(@suggestions)
  {
   print "$sug," if $sug ne $src;
  }
 }
 print "\n";
}

Feel free to improve upon the script to capture more suggestions for redirects to articles listed in User:Ganeshbot/Created and User:Ganeshbot/Not created. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 07:58, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
