OMGWTFBBQ
ahaning offers a different explanation:
- OMGWTFBBQ (the SA admin) was in an IRC channel and they were coming up wth random acronyms.
- He explains this in the SAclopedia:
-
- Way back when, I used to work for a few online Mac Gaming websites. Inside Mac Games, Mac Gamer's Ledge, MacGamer, etc. During that time, I was often to be found on GameRanger, a Mac equivalent to Gamespy Arcade (it's actually better if you ask me). Anyhow, there was another Mac gaming website run by a few Mac gamers with a sense of humor, Utterer.com, which was headed by none other than Frank "Utterer" Caratozzolo. Frank was also always on GameRanger, and we always chatted.
-
- One day, a person logged into GameRanger that was just a bit too AOLish for our tastes. As in, every time the guy said anything in chat, it had a "OMG" or a "LOL" or a "ROFLMAO" attached to it. Of course this gets annoying rather quickly, and Frank was tired of this guy's moronic BS. So what does any rational, sane person do? He floods the channel with as many acronyms as he can. Frank Started off with "OMG WTF BBQ DSL TNT BBC CNN CBS PCP RNR PBS NBA NFL..." and everyone else followed suit. The whole channel just spouted off every three letter acronym they could think of. The idiot got the hint and logged off.
- And that's where OMGWTFBBQ comes from. True, utterly boring, story.

Flamates
I'm starting to see this term used more and more, sort of "when flamewars break out, I know my flamates have got my back." Rycanada 23:27, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
INet
INet (inet) is commonly to refer to internet.
ASL
ASL is missing from the list It's mostly a web based chat acronym, used by kids - age / sex / location. The implications are obvious and probably don't need to be explained too much in the article itself.
- Someone got weirded out after I put 17 / Yes Please / Australia
BIOYIOP
"Blow It Out Your Input/Output Port" Saw it somewhere as one of the longest old accronyms before the long strings we have now, don't know why I remember it, but thought it was funny.
DOD
DOD Can also mean Day of Defeat, a WWII PC game paced off the Half-life engine. I'm adding it.
Wub?
Anyone knows why Wub redirects to this article when there is no entry for it on the page? --SoWhy Talk 10:18, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Teh?
Since when is teh considered intentional? The letters, when struck fast, are easiest to hit in the teh order.69.208.202.163 08:36, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
- Changed the description to say "an accidental or intentional misspelling of 'the'". If "accidental or intentional" is redundant, feel free to remove it. midg3t 04:34, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- it is intentional sometimes... if you know anyone that speaks 1337, ask them sometime... - Adolphus79 04:41, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Just to confirm, it really is deliberate, at least in the right circles. In my experience it's quite common, not just in leet. It's in urbandictionary, and it even made wiktionary! :D --H2g2bob 18:15, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup needed
A {{cleanup}} tag has been added to this article because there are a host of slang words listed here which are not in use and need to be removed. The suggested starting point is to remove any neologism which does not receive at least 500 hits on Google or provide a verifiable reference. —RaD Man (talk) 19:06, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
- That would be verification rather than cleanup. Kerowyn 03:37, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Ooo biscuits
Can anyone explain what ooo biscuits means?
- An expression to show curiosity or a liking to biscuits.
Take off leetspeak
Leetspeak should be separated from this article. Most internet slang is acronyms. Leetspeak is used with numbers/symbols replacing the letters. 24.158.140.44 11:38, 30 January 2006 (UTC)bttfpromo

Purges
This article contains POV and a dreadful amount of urban dictionary style nonsense. There isn't such a thing as internet slang anyway - there are internet slangs. Ebay slang differs from say Everquest slang. Wikipedia has its own jargon as well. Most of the list consists of abbreviations. What shall we do with this article? Secretlondon 19:48, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I've edited out a bit of POV from this article, but I think for now the best thing is to leave it how it is. We can gradually move different internet slang for specific places, IE ebay and wikipedia, into their own seperate articles that include etymology etc. Once this article has been emptied of it's contents, it can be made it a disambiguation/hub page connecting to all the new articles, perhaps with a few words on internet slang as a whole. --Badharlick 06:20, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Merge with GameFAQs message boards#Jargon
I think the merge would be a bad idea due to the fact that many of the terms there are not widely used and are kept to the GameFAQs message boards. Andrew Northall 02:27, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
I think maybe this article needs a GameFAQ slang section. As it stands this article doesn't work as different places have their own slang. Secretlondon 21:04, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
But much of the slang in GameFAQs originates from many other places such as 4Chan and SA anyway. I think it should be merged. LUE, 4chan, SA, TheSecretLevel, the absolute dregs of human society ;). It would be great though if we could also create a section for specific sites such it's only in 4chan where they use "sage" or GameFAQs where they use B&.--Asfalterisk 11:25, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
There is jargon specific to one site, and cross-site jargon. Wikipedia has its own jargon, SA has its own jargon, usenet has loads.. I think we need to split this into generic internet slang - and site-specific jargon. Secretlondon 01:26, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
Split. If no-one object I will split this list into site specific (by site), generic and discard the rest. There's loads of idiosyncratic stuff in here currently. Secretlondon 18:10, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
;( x (large number)
The article mentions ;( x as being internet slang - I personally have never seen this and it points to a specific site where its common on. As this site is tottally obscure, I reckon this doesn't belong on this page, unless someone can vouch for its common usage. EAi 17:38, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
General Announcement
For the record, I, Huyen Nguyen, screenname prouddemocrat, am responsible for adding the term SIWA, for having coined it. Thank you.
^That's a point. What range of usage on the internet makes these acronyms acceptable? One suggested by the user 'thewinekone' on the website 'YouTube', was 'TOL' meaning 'Thinking Of Laughing', as an alternative to 'LOL'. Thousands of people are now using this acronym across the internet, though it was removed when I added it. Please could the rules defining the acceptability of this internet slang be defined.
Suggestion for seperation
Maybe we should make a seperate page for gaming slang. This page (list of internet slang) is getting quite long and it may be easier from the point of view of people new to gaming and wanting to check internet slang definitions for forums and such.
For example, terms such as 'lol' and 'g2g' are very general and are used in IM convos and emails and such. Whereas terms like 'gg' and 'camping' are pretty much exclusive to online gaming.
I think this is a good idea as it means there can be an efficient quick reference list for gamers slang. (a newcomer may only have a few seconds to find out what "no base-rape" means.) It would also be better because a shorter less intimdating list can be read before one even enters a game
Whereas there's more time to find definitions for forums and chatrooms.
What do we think?
-Gepper Gepper 17:48, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
I like the idea, but maybe not a whole seperate page. What about seperate categories on the page? (games, IM, etc.) Code E 18:57, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Rename?
Anyone think this should be called Dictionary of Internet slang? It's a list of words and their meanings.. sounds like a dictionary to me. Friday (talk) 15:33, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'd rather have that just as a redirect to this page. -H2g2bob 13:24, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- If you were going to call it "Dictionary of Internet slang", some might argue it belongs in the Wiktionary. We don't want that. Just make it a redirect. -007bond 07:43, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Goo?
In the "8===D~~" section, the guy says a penis with goo coming out. Goo?! How old is this guy. Its sperm.
- omg ur a disgrace to god
- Well, if the penis happens to be infected with gonnorrhea or other diseases, there might in fact be "goo" that isn't sperm. 64.12.116.200 19:30, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- the 8 is balls FYI

Censor?
I'm wondering if we should censor the f-word from this list. Everyone will know what it means, except for 5-year-olds playing Runescape who don't understand what '1337' is. Which are the kind of people who would benfit from censorship. And besides, there are LOTS of 'f***s' in this article. Anyone else think our children should be protected against profanity? 1337 r0XX0r 15:28, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- No, Wikipedia is not censored for the protection of minors. However, your ideals are laudable :) --Sam Pointon United FC 03:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- You mean Laughable, right? Censorship is teh gay.--Badharlick 06:23, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
- Definitely not. Not only is Wikipedia not to be censored, there is a warning at the top of the page. Wikipedia cannot be blamed. -007bond 07:44, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- You mean Laughable, right? Censorship is teh gay.--Badharlick 06:23, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Illustrations
I feel there should be more illustrations throughout this article. Maybe 1 per letter (or every other)? Anyone else get the feeling that this page looks like a mass of raw code at glance?
Kirbykon Forums
I would just like to state that the forums at s13.invisionfree.com/kirbykon will be making words, we plan to add most of the good ones to this list. We will also say these words in other forums to have people say these words more often. So if you see something tat looks like this after a word, (Originated from the Kirbykon Forums), it came from the Kirbykon Forums. :P —This unsigned comment was added by 209.165.177.143 (talk • contribs) .
This isn't really the place to put words you've just made up. If you made one and it actually caught on, that's great, but I would suggest not to add any newly coined phrases until, for example, a good number of Google results proves that people actually use it. I could start saying GLOTI for "guffawing lightly on the internet", and maybe even my friends would start using it, but it doesn't make it notable enough to put in an encyclopedia. --Rocketgoat 04:41, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for leaving a note. From now on all of your edits to the page List of Internet slang will be systematically reverted, until you promise that you won't be adding your homegrown words here. Rocketgoat already explained why. Sorry. Don't take it personally. Wikipedia is not what you apparently think it is. --logixoul 22:19, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
The existence of this "article" invites exactly this sort of thing. Good luck keeping it out. Friday (talk) 22:24, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
(I assume this was directed at me) What action do you suggest we take? Renominate for deletion? I'm not strictly for the article, either. But consensus was obvious last time... So? --logixoul 09:37, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, not sure I have a suggestion, maybe I'm just complaining for no useful reason. Still, I wish the people who vote "keep" on this junk would stick around to see the consequences of their actions. Friday (talk) 14:41, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Maybe the users who voted "delete" should take a good look at the "consequences" of the past two weeks of edits. H3G3M0N 03:26, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Move to Wiktionary?
This article isn't really about anything... it just gives definitions. Doesn't all this stuff really belong on Wiktionary? Whatever happens to this article, this information should at least be reproduced on Wiktionary. Theshibboleth 03:11, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Agree. --logixoul 11:27, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
- Disagree. I find it v.useful to wikilink it on talks and stuff, like this: LMTO!!! NikoSilver (T) @ (C) 14:52, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
- Comment: What's wrong with linking a Wiktionary page, like this: something? --logixoul 22:08, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- You mean each and every single entry will be added separately and I'll be able to write this: [[wiktionary:LMTO|LMTO]]? In that case will there be a list somewhere too, for people who are just browsing for a funny quote? If both answers are "yes", I'll change my vote. NikoSilver (T) @ (C) 16:03, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- Disagree, but something needs to be done about the article I'm thinking of splitting it. Something like:
- List of computer jargon: More 'technical' parts of the list, things like CTD, PEBKAC, etc.
- List of online-gaming terms: Zerg, PvP, &c.
- List of internet slang: Things like LOL, ROFLMAO, TBH, &c. (Possibly this should have a different name to include BBS/forum-type slang like troll, &c.)
- ...and then there are the meme-ish terms. Not sure what to do with these, they are the things that are cluttering up the article. O RLY, YGGR, etc. List of internet slang memes?
- Thoughts? porges 23:59, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
- Agree. --logixoul 22:08, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- Comment: No objection porges. Also, maybe, we should format it like a table to save space and make it more readable. Eg. like this:
-
-
Slang Meaning LIAB "life is a bitch" LMAO "laughing my ass off" (can be parodically extended to "LMAOnade", etc) LMBO "laughing my butt off" LMFAO "laughing my fucking ass off" LMTO "laughing my testicles off" LOFL portmanteau of "LOL" and "ROFL" LOL "laughing out loud" or "lots of laughs" (For other variations of the word LOL, see LOL (Internet slang))

- Disagree. In cases like that tables are inappropriate. --logixoul 22:08, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- Following your link, you suggest we should use the example below?
- LIAB: "life is a bitch"
- LMAO: "laughing my ass off" (can be parodically extended to "LMAOnade", etc)
- LMBO: "laughing my butt off"
- LMFAO: "laughing my fucking ass off"
- LMTO: "laughing my testicles off"

- No, since in this case more specific markup exists - the definition lists. But I can't find a reference on that. Can you? --logixoul 08:06, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Following your link, you suggest we should use the example below?
- The syntax should be left as it is on the current page - i.e. definition lists. If it looks ugly, use CSS to fix it (even make it look like a table). The reason definition lists are good is that various web-crawlers can pick up the defs. Google, for instance, will spider this page. porges 00:35, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Comment: Doesn't look ugly to me, anyway. --logixoul 08:06, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- It still looks lengthier. And it's not practical for such long lists. Maybe it's worth giving it a try to adapt this policy accordingly... NikoSilver (T) @ (C) 16:03, 10 April 2006 (UTC) «««discussion going on at User talk:Logixoul
- Disagree. In cases like that tables are inappropriate. --logixoul 22:08, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that it needs splitting up - there is a general "base" slang, and different slangs in different contexts/locations. Many spaces have their own jargon - we don't need the current in-phrases in each message board the world over, but we need the basics. We have a list of internet memes already. We now have:
- List of Internet slang
- List of online-gaming slang
- List of computer-related jargon
- List of Internet slang specific to thread-based communication

Rearranging
I not only rearranged the entries to be in alphabetical order, I also reorganized the definitions to be easier to read by following a specific pattern. Took a while. Sorry to not bring this up as a vote, but I felt everyone would agree or really not care, and time would be wasted. ElijahD 11:23, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Most of this article is unneccessary and/or has little use
Some of the stuff on this article.. well, most of the stuff on this article can be condensed. There's no reason to have a string of internet acronyms when you can obviously figure it out yourself. Example being, GGNOREFU, for example, you could easily interpret each part of the slang with GG, NORE, and FU. There's no reason why you'd need to string 800 words together just to add to this article.
Might I add, some of this stuff is just outright fake and not even slang at all. Using ZOMFGSQAUREDWTFBBQFISHHAXROFLMFAOAWLOLZ0RZ in the article is one thing, but wasting space with absolutely non-existant slang terms like WIOAMHBFI makes this article totally pointless.
Bottom line.. stop editing this thing to be an inside joke by a few users, and make it something everyone can understand. Flame Strike 8:19, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
