Perhaps an attempt should be made to organize this a bit more? Alphabetical order, maybe?

I think at least Lobelia Sackville-Baggins and Rose Cotton deserve separate articles. Ausir 22:39, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I hate to bring this up after it's just been moved, but shouldn't it be "List of female Hobbits"? --Aranel ("Sarah") 14:13, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Ai. Yes.  (Anárion) 14:16, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Actually there's many cases where Tolkien uses "hobbits" with a non-capital initial. I'm not at all sure when each case is appropriate. I will look into this. Aris Katsaris 14:25, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
True that, but that's when referring to "hobbits" as in "men": "two hobbits walk down the path". When referring to Hobbits as a race, the term is typically capitalized.  (Anárion) 14:27, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I'd like to revist this. Any objections to a move? -Aranel ("Sarah") 20:02, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
Doesn't matter much to me either way. --CBD 19:48, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Alphabetical

I reorganized this page to an alphabetical arrangement to help accomodate a more extensive list. The family groupings could be confusing with the numerous instances that an individual was born into one clan and married into another. I alphabetized by first name because some of the earlier hobbits had no 'family' name and (again) the two different family names could cause confusion. --CBD 19:48, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

I decided to merge the male and female lists into one (and make 'Hobbit' uppercase as above). This allows much shorter intra-page links. Having them all on the same page also allows jumping around on a single page to track through a family history rather than going back and forth between the two lists. --CBD 23:56, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Gardner vs Gamgee

There has been some dispute whether Sam's children were of the family 'Gamgee' or 'Gardner'. It is important to note that Sam himself founded the Gardner family rather than his son Frodo;

"In addition some genealogical information is provided concerning Samwise the founder of the family of Gardner, later famous and influential." - RotK, Appendix C (first paragraph)

It might be assumed that Sam is here being called the 'founder' only in the sense that he was Frodo Gardner's father and not a 'Gardner' himself, but that too is directly addressed by the text;

"Some said that it [April 6] was old Sam Gardner's birthday, some that it was the day on which the Golden Tree first flowered in 1420, and some that it was the Elves' New Year." - RotK, Appendix D (last paragraph)

I realize that it is commonly assumed that all of Sam's children except Frodo were named 'Gamgee', but the available evidence contradicts that. --CBDunkerson 18:23, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Links

So that we don't have a complete link overload can I suggest that refrain from including a link to a member with the same initial letter. e.g don't link to Bilbo in the Bingo Baggins entry.

Can I also suggest that we minimise the number of links to the notable hobbits, Bilbo, Frodo etc.

On another subject why as they dates not SR? Thu 11:37, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Suggestions make sense. On the dates... they've been that way since 'way back' and I never thought to change it. Since alot of the info here is from the genealogical tables Shire Reckoning might make more sense. --CBDunkerson 11:46, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Party Attendees

Should we have a marker to indicate those Hobbits that were at Bilbo's 111st birthday party? Thu 13:18, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Some sort of '@ party' symbol sounds fine to me. --CBDunkerson 15:41, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article Clean-up

This article obviously needs some work done on it. I was thinking deleting alot of the hobbits with no infomation given or finding information for them. Also, granting their own articles to important hobbits, particualry Rosie Cotten and Lotho. Dhawk1964 00:19, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
