Talk:List of Bay Street law firms

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The introduction to this page is inaccurate. Toronto is not home to "Canada's" financial district. It is home to "Toronto's" financial district. It would be much more accurate to say that Toronto is Canada's financial and corporate capital.

I don't think its accurate to say that "Toronto is home to Canada's top corporate law firms". I think it more accurate to say that it is home to "many" of Canada's top corporate law firms. Firms like Montreal's Ogilvy Renault, Calgary's Bennett Jones and Ottawa's Gowlings are certainly among Canada's top corporate law firms - they just don't happen to be top of the heap in Toronto. Likewise, I don't believe that any of Toronto's seven sisters are in the top tier in the Calgary, Ottawa or Montreal markets.

Good points, although let's keep in mind the distinction between "top" and "largest". The "top" remark was probably meant to refer to "largest"; Lexpert data provides an objective view showing that these firms do indeed handle Canada's largest transactions.
I've edited for style -- was repetitive and a bit clunky (transactional business firms doing large transactions involving businesses, etc). Remember that the introduction should be a couple of sentence. Substantive points should go in the main body.
Finally, don't forget to sign your comment using four tildes. AnotherBDA 17:03, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
Fair enough, but check Lexpert again - if the criteria is "largest transactions" then you would still have to include firms outside of Toronto. My point is that people have to be careful about referring to the sisters in a Canada-wide context. The sisters are not invariably involved in Canada's largest deals. In certain sectors, like energy (which is now the sector driving many of the largest deals), a sister or two may be at the table, but Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer, Bennett Jones and Macleod Dixon will be there too.
If someone has some time, the whole "Bay Street" page (and stubs) needs work, if only because there are many interesting things about the history of these firms, the differences between the firms themselves, the growing influence of boutique firms, and the emerging strength of second tier firms, and the question of whether the market is big enough to sustain seven sisters.
