[edit] poodle monkey

Shouldn't the poodlemonkey be here? I would add it (if it isn't here) but I can't remeber anything about it. —Randfan!! 17:11, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Its listed in the Unseen section.--Fyre2387 (talkcontribs) 17:16, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Special Thanks to AvatarSpirit.net

I'd like to give special thanks to AvatarSpirit.net who allowed me to transcript their creature information to this page and allow me to use their pictures when needed. H2P 02:18, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] To Do

Still to be done:

  • Wikifi the page, preferably putting a link to the real world creatures referenced
  • Make sure all abnormal creatures are listed (avoid creatures that aren't any different from real world creatures, including Wood Frogs)
  • Many of the creatures need thier information increased so that the pictures don't disrupt the next creatures information. Format fixed
  • Spellcheck, grammar, formatting, all that junk
  • Reference this page on other Avatar pages
  • Possibly change the Avatar template to include this page?

Thanks for any help you guys can give me. H2P 02:17, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Creatures as characters

First off, I'd really like to say good job to H2P; this page looks excellent, and I look forward to helping in its growth. One thing I'd like to pose to everyone, however, is if this page should be included in Category:Avatar: The Last Airbender characters. While I can understand them not being viewed as typical characters on an account of matters like intelligence, lack of bearing on the plot, etc., I'd argue they should indeed be included as characters; many creatures, such as the Giant Owl spirit (can't think of his name at the moment), are quite intelligent and can (and should) be easily viewed as characters, and two specific creatures--Appa and Momo--are classified as "Major secondary characters" on Wikipedia. Since these cases exist and more will undoubtly arise as the show progresses, I feel that creatures should be categorized as characters, but I thought I'd mention that here before changing anything. Any thoughts? –Prototime (talkcontribs) 23:26, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

I say go for it; the series suggests that these creatures are important and noteworthy enough to be considered part of the story, and thus are characters in the plot. --Tryforceful 00:40, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
I specifically left out all spirit world creatures as that could be devoted to the Spirit World page whenever it gets built. For Appa and Momo I put their species. I really have no comment as all I've listed is species and only give nods to the creatures we've seen with names. H2P 01:30, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

I am going to go ahead and add Dragonfly to the list of creatures. They were not really a main character in "Tales of Ba Sing Se" but they were shown at Comic-Con 2006 and will most likely be shown again in the future. It does not seem likely that a creature that was not even really shown upclose in an episode would get a whole slide at Comic-Con. User:Whitlockite 16:52, 4 October 2006

Go for it. I was going to but couldn't think of Anything to write since I didn't go to Comic-Con. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 20:57, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Flopsie

This topic needs revisiting: I'm pretty sure he's a goat hybrid, which would explain the ears, horns and coloration. Furthermore, the article isn't consistent with bison/buffalo. Also, the hunched back appears to be the only bison trait, and bison aren't hunched in reality at all -- they have a protrusion above a straightened spine.

http://www.woodbison.com/images/Bison%202003/Bison%2011.jpg H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 16:20, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Please stop changing it. Compare this picture above of a buffalo with the picture of Flopsie. The connection can't be denoated. Bisons have the hunch, the legs, and the matching tail. The goat, on the other hand, only matches in the legs. If we were going only by the legs, it could be blended with almost any cloved mammal. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 21:35, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Due to the vandalism involving this topic, I suggest we lock this page to unregistered users, hoping that they will atleast come here and debate rather than creating an edit war. I don't know how to go about doing this. Also, please read the reformat discussion below. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 02:56, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

there is a video on turbonick that says it is a goat gorilla that it official. Now you see I am right heirtopendragon - Azrean

This is the message left after the name of the Goat Gorilla was confirmed. I need to address this as I'm tired of seeing this happen multiple times on our edits on multiple pages. There is no need to show boat when we are wrong. The fact is, throughout the entire edit war with Flopsie's race no one at any point in time brought forth a source to prove it as a Goat Gorilla. If I am wrong on something that is not confirmed (there is a reason I wrote it in red) I'll admit it and gladly change it, but without a source to back up a claim you can not act like the victor of a battle that no one was fighting. I came here and provided an argument which no one else did. Had you come here and actually continued to discuss the question I'd have a little more respect for you being correct.
This is for ALL pages. If you think you are correct, whether it be about Azula's age, Zuko's hair color, whatever, unless you provide a source and discuss that matter on the talk page, your edits will be reverted. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 17:06, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Badgermole

I decide to change the badgermole from american badger hybrid to European badger. The markings look more like that of a European Badger.-bobosmokey

...I'm looking at the pictures of both species on Wiki, how are they different? H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 05:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

The European Badger has only 2 black stripes while the American hsa 4 black stripes. Plus the shape of the face seems more like a European to me to be narrower while the American is broader. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.228.2.179 (talkcontribs).

You had me at the stripes. Good enough for me. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 05:43, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Turtle ducks

the only friggen time we have seen turtle ducks tehy were swimming there is no evidence that they can fly

Thank you for your abuse of the english Language. However, according to Nick.com, the turtle ducks can, somehow, fly. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 22:45, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Koalaotter

According to the Nickelodeon Avatar magazine that was released on September 12th the correct spelling is Koalaotter as seen on page 3 of the magazine.76.177.216.62 23:29, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Feel free to change it then. I haven't been able to pick up that copy yet. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 04:54, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Yep, Done and done. The magazine is certainly worth picking up, contains a lot of useful information. 76.177.216.62 21:05, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reformat

I suggest a complete reformat to allow the pictures to work easier. Unfortunatly I'm not so good with how to do things like that or what would work. Any help would be great. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 04:30, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

And Voila. I put them all in tables. This should GREATLY help us. The table let's me do a few things:
1) We can now add picture to very small summaries without those pictures attacking other summaries
2) We can now add very small summaries for creatures that we have pictures of. This is very important for the recent Tales of Ba Sing Se
3) Creatures can be added without having to swap pictures from left to right.
If anyone knows how we can still have the contents table that would be greatly appreciated. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 20:51, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes place the creatures name one a new line without the quotes, but with 3 equals sign as I have just done. shadzar|Talk|contribs 20:40, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] no pictures

Is this list being kept solely to those whith pictures of the "animals"? There was a poodle monkey mentioned in the latest episode. Also how are the names derived? Closed Captioning had the Rabbiroo spelled with an I. Is there a better place to find the proper spelling of the creature names? shadzar|Talk|contribs 15:12, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm glad you asked that, I'll answer as fully as possible. Recently, I included a section at the bottom for all creatures that were mentioned but not seen, such as the bears and the puddle monkey. Without a picture there isn't much we can actually describe. So yes, all the animals on the top portion should be animals we have seen and can provide a picture.
All names that are unknown are listed in red, these are names that have not been confirmed and are simply there to discribe the animal. If any of the names are PROVEN (see above about Flopsie) you are more than welcome to change it (see Koalaotter). At this current time, the only place we know to get names is the Nick.com site when they update new episodes they usually provide one or two names for the creatures seen. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 19:13, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] http://www.avatarspiritmedia.net/creatures.php

fixed the link so it works if anyone was gathering information from there as to the creatures it lists. shadzar|Talk|contribs 03:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pygmy Panther versus Pygmy Puma

I have edited this one section of the list four times now, and everytime someone changes the name of the creature, takes off the image, and then changes the description. In regards to whether it is a "Panther" or a "Puma," by the visual characteristics, it is definately a melanistic leopard, generally referred to as a black panther

I think it looks like a black panther to me. Aang-kai 17:14, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Don't put pictures that big on the talk page. According to Nick.com they are Pygmy Puma. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 17:26, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

My apologies. On nick.com, in their description, they contradict themselves. "Smaller, sleeker versions of pumas bred for compact city living. These cat-sized, extremely muscular panthers roam in packs and other animals avoid them at all costs." Pumas are not the same as Panthers. The contradiciton is probably why I keep calling them Pygmy Panthers. And, as it is apparent that Nick feels that Puma and Panther is interchangable, the animal can be called both. Aang-kai 19:15, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

If you look up Puma, Panther is actually a breed of Puma while at the same time a Panther can be any large cat. It's all a bit confusing. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 22:36, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Puma and Panther are interchangable commonnames for the species Panthera concolor, which has numerous other names, such as Panther, Catamount, Painter, American lion, Mexican lion, Florida Panther, Silver Lion, Red Lion, Red Panther, Red Tiger, Brown Tiger, Deer Tiger, Ghost Cat, Mountain Screamer, Indian Devil, Sneak Cat, King Cat, and Painted Cat.

Panther, which is the derviation of the Genus Panthera, which includes big cats such as Lions, Tigers, and Leopards, is commonly used to refer, outside of the United States, to the species Panthera pardus, the Leopard. There have only been documented cases of melanistic leopars and jaguars, and only claimed melanistic "pumas." Many biologists and zoologist believe that the melanistic puma does not actually exists, and is what we call a cryptid.

Also, I edited the description, taking the first sentence away as it was simply a definition of the name, and edited it with the description from Avatar Spirit.net. I also explained the city evolution, taking a line or two from the Nick.com description Aang-kai 14:20, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Just don't take it verbatim so it's not plagarism. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 16:33, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Arctic Seal

I put the name as Arctic Seal for a couple of reasons. The main and most prominent reason is that in Serpent's Pass Katara said she had experience delivering Arctic Seal cubs. The ONLY seals seen at the south pole were the seals in question. Therefore it should be safe to assume that striped seal is named the Arctic Seal.
The second reason I put it at Arctic seal is to avoid a possible edit war that could errupt surrounding whether or not it was a Tiger Seal or a Zebra Seal as the stripes could resemble either. If you can bring forth proof of the actual name please put it here so we can change it. Until then, the name Arctic Seal is the only known seal to exist and be seen in the south pole. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 01:46, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

To put it simply, its stated in the bonus material of the cine-manga, written by the Bryan and Mike, along with other information.

That's weird. Why would that pop up in a manga? Feel free to switch it back then. Next time just tell your source in the Summary box. Without a source it all looks like vandalism and opinions to me. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 02:15, 16 October 2006 (UTC) Gotcha. Oh and the information was in the section called "Bonus Material". I think that pretty much explains it.

Zebras do not have transverse stripes emanating from their underside (like the seals in Avatar do), yet Tigers and similar striped big cats do.

Not our call anymore anonymous NON POST SIGNER. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 20:39, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chicken Duck/Turducken

There's been a lot of problems about whether the wattle on this creature is that of a turkey or a rooster. I figured it best to discuss it here rather than have an edit war. I think it most resembles a roosters, because it isn't attached to the neck, like a turkeys is. Exhibit A 03:24, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

It's actually a snood, because it comes from the top of the beak and hangs over. Rooster do not have a snood, Turkeys do. Look at http://www.avatarspirit.net/images/screenshots/114/067.jpg for a better view of the animal in question and you will see it most resembles a Turkey's snood.Prowler50mil12:51, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

The feathers on that screenshot actually show the turkey resemblence a lot better. When I get some free time I need to convert some pictures to the black border style so I'll use that screenshot. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 15:13, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
I guess you're right. You can't really see the turkey in thae oher images, but that one shows it pretty clearly. Exhibit A 15:31, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fuzzy little hermit crabs

Could anyone get like a picture and description of those fuzzy hermit crabs seen in "The Northern Air Temple" episode? 70.248.135.135 18:40, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

They aren't needed on here because they aren't avatar specific. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 23:40, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] There is no Tigerdillo

Look on avatarspirit.net and you will see that is not a Tigerdillo but an Armadillo Lion. Even though it's an unofficial avatar website it convinced me that it was an Armadillo Lion. Actually, when I first saw the creature in the show, I didn't think about what kind of feline it was.

  1. Avatar Spirit, though they were a great help to me in building this page, is not a source on names considering the fact that many of them have been proven wrong.
  2. By continually changing names on this page you are prompting others to do the same. The problem is, all names in red are unconfirmed, changing them just hurts links that might direct to this page and changing them without a source doesn't do anything.
  3. That doesn't have distiguishing characteristics of either feline that I can see. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 06:57, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jackalope

A jackalope can clearly be seen in the background in Appa's Last Days. It's mentioned on the episode's page. Can someone add it to this one?

[edit] The Serpent

For anyone with something to say about the Serpent, please say it here. - Lastairbender 1-11-07

Why not, instead, put the information in that section? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by HeirToPendragon (talkcontribs) 22:04, 11 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Messanger Hawks

The Fire Nation uses messanger hawks. Does anyone have more info? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.72.88.155 (talk) 02:51, 2 February 2007 (UTC).

Yep, it's a hawk... that carries messages. It's not on this list because it doesn't show any indication ob being anything but a normal hawk. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 06:54, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Apparently, I was wrong. It's called a Dragon hawk and there is info on it at Nick.com. I have work to do on this page anyway so I'll add it probably tomorrow. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 07:10, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Red font color, Vandalism?

Someone put red font coloring on maybe 10 of the animal names. I'm kinda new here, would that be vandalism? If it happens again, should the page be protected? Millancad 02:33, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

"Note: Many of the animals may not be listed under their correct name. Names presented that are not confirmed are written in red." Cherries Jubilee 05:00, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

What she said. I know nice input. ~Father's Wish 13 March 2007 (UTC)
