Talk:List of Albania-related articles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What about Albanian-related articles like Peć? Andres 09:56, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Sure, if you want to. I even have in the list Raki (alcoholic beverage) :), just because it's used in Albania. Anything on Albanians is Albania-related as far as I am concerned. Dori 13:14, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Should I move the unedited links to another page? Originally I wanted them here for completeness and so they could be moved to the edited section more easily. However, the unedited section is getting rather large, and many articles in there will probably remain unedited for a long time (if they will ever be). I was thinking of dumping the film lists too, but I realized the page would become huge. --Dori 04:35, 1 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Keep the unedited links. I think they could be edited easily by someone having access to sources in Albanian.

The page is only long, not "voluminous". If scrolling is uncomfortable, you can use a more compact style:

Sgefqet Bej Verlaci - Vlorë - and so on. Andres 05:49, 1 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Have a look. Is this better? --Dori 16:14, 1 Sep 2003 (UTC)
Yeah. Now, definitely it isn't too long, though the number is impressive indeed. Andres 16:33, 1 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I created an article by name "Shefqet Verlaci" and redirected to it from "Shefqet Bej Verlaci". If you don't oppose this title please put it to the lists, else redirect. Andres 20:46, 1 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Added article to list (as Shefqet Verlaci). --Dori 22:49, 1 Sep 2003 (UTC)

[edit] Google rankings

Wow, I just tried a few names from this page on Google, and the wikipedia articles come at least on the first page, with most being the top one. I can't believe how much weight google gives to wikipedia. It's scary to see some articles I started show up as the most "relevant" by google. --Dori 05:12, 10 Sep 2003 (UTC)

All I know about Andon Beça is that he was Minister of Economy in Verlaci's 1939 government and Minister of Finances in 1943, still under Italians. Is it worth creating a stub about him and include him to this list? Or, would you mind if I do this? I think, firstly, it's good if this data is in one place, and, secondly, there must be more on him in Albanian sources. Andres 13:21, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I wouldn't mind if you did it, but I don't think he is important enough to create have a stub about him. --Dori 13:55, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
I agree that he is not very important. But as he was a member of the government, it is natural to ask oneself: who was he? My hesitations are just due to the fact that I don't have easy access to further information about him, so I am forced to confine myself to a stub. But actually I would like to know more. I decided to trace Albanian history since 1939 and make it as complete as I can. The more I learn the more I want to learn. But I am not going to be a historian, therefore my research possibilities are limited. (Another project is Albanian geography. Currently I am collecting material about Sarandë.)
Are you currently studying at a University? If so what is your area of study (just curious)? --Dori
Currently I am a PhD student of semiotics. I have an MA in philosophy and a degree in mathematics. Andres 17:49, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
Wow, that's some credentials. I had never heard of semiotics, and that wikipedia article doesn't say much, but it "looks" interesting [1]. --Dori
As to now, I have no clarity about who greeted Italians and why. Was the Italian occupation generally experienced as the loss of independence, or rather a chance for uniting all Albanians into one state, or a relief from Zog's rule? Or even for many people of no relevance at all?
I don't know who greeted them (my guess is people who were not in power but wanted to be, see the Congress of Lushnjë article for the situation during WWI), but the Italians were definitely considered invadors by the majority of Albanians. The Italians wanted to partition Albania and get some pieces for themselves (if not all of it). Other states that wanted a piece were Greece, Serbia, etc. I don't know how many people resented Zog's rule. I imagine it must have been mostly the wealthier people, and those who wanted to be in power for themselves, but I suspect the laypeople did not oppose his rule as much. I don't have all the historical background needed for an analysis. There are four volumes coming out on Albanian history. I have the first two which go up to 1912 or a bit further, but even these four volumes might be of dubious integrity. If you need something specific about that timeframe I can try and look it up in those two books, but I don't have the time to read and write up all the history. Wikipedia is very much a small hobby for me. --Dori
Thank you for your explanations. What you are saying is entirely plausible to me.
I somewhere read that there were 157 Albanian (pro-Italian) Fascists when the Provisional Assembly was formed.
Wikipedia is a hobby for me too, but once I started researching, Albania became really interesting for me. The whole project takes much time, of course. You need not do more than what is interesting for yourself. Andres 17:49, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
I think we should not care too much about people's importance. For some reason I think you would not hesitate to place an article about Andon Beça into the Albanian Wikipedia. And why should this place contain less? Andres 16:37, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
I just applied the Google test and I thought there were far too few mentions of him. Also, if there is a stub people are less likely to contribute any more (unless they have a lot more info), where as an unedited article might prompt someone to do more research and come up with some more information.
It seems to me that the Google test is not the ultimate criterion. If Beça had been active some 60 years later, he would pass the test.
I am not so sure that the stub is less attractive. At least not for someone like me. The only problem is that the internet is not enough for such research, and a person who knows Albanian and has enough time and interest is needed. I think there will be someone.
Yes, the internet is not very informative when it comes to such info, but what I was saying is that if you search for Verlaci, and you search for Beça you'll see that the former was a more important figure than the latter, despite the two being from the same period and country. --Dori
I agree that Beça was less important than Verlaci. Andres 22:51, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
If I had info in Albanian I would translate it into English, so an Albanian Wikipedia would also not contain an article about him written by me :) I have given a few very quick thoughts on an Albanian Wikipedia but it would be a tremendous task for one person, so there is no way I would venture into it. --Dori 17:02, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
OK, I don't mean that you really write that article. I just mean a comparison of the criteria of importance in the two cases.
Starting the Albanian Wikipedia is very easy on the condition that you don't translate the software. I started translating it into Estonian on April, and not alone, and it is not ready yet. On the other side, keeping it alive alone is not easy. Andres 17:49, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
Oh no I didn't mean the software. I meant just the articles is a vast time-consuming task. I have seen some of the other pedias (e.g. italian), and there much less info than in english. I would rather focus what little effort I can spare to add to the english one, as I don't believe the albanian one will get very far. --Dori 18:08, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)
I believe that some time the Albanian Wikipedia will be at least as huge as the English one is now. And I believe that the English one will grow thorough enough to contain a thorough article on Andon Beça. Andres 22:51, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Dori, how do you avoid the table of contents? Andres 19:35, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)

__NOTOC__ does that. It's also included in Template:compactTOC.-- User:Docu

[edit] Category

Shouldn't this be, instead of its current condition, something like Category:Albania (which probably already exists) and a section on Wikipedia:Requested articles? I don't think it fits the criteria for being a list, see Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and series boxes, because it provides no real additional information that a category wouldn't provide. If this were organized by section of what things are, say, Geography, People, I don't know what else, then it might be more useful, but in its current state, it is not very helpful.
