[edit] Important 21st century classical composers?

Considering that there is a list of "important operas", having a list of "important 21st century classical works" or "important 21st century classical composers" would compliment this nicely.

[edit] Criteria for inclusion

Names from List of 20th century classical composers not yet verified as being 21st century:

Some of the names with dates which were put on the 21st century list may be incorrect because only a birthdate was present. The names without dates that made it to the 21st century list are correct, as they are composers I am familiar with but haven't found birthdates for.

Dates I could find, of that list: Berger -- (1867 - 1942), Hurel (b. 1955), Leroux (b. 1959). From the sources I could find on the web it appears that Hurel and Leroux are both still composing, as well. Have added those two to the list. Mindspillage 20:46, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Bartok and Hindemith, just added, shouldn't be included, since they died in the 20th century.Dukeofomnium 16:59, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Is this list including people who are still alive but haven't written anything of note in the 21st century? (For example, has Malcolm Arnold written anything recently? Grove doesn't say so, and I don't really think of him as a 21st-century composer.) Mindspillage 20:46, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

It appears to me that this list is currently composers who lived during part of the 21st century. The lack of this has been my only criteria for removal of composers. It also seems that this quantitative approach is safer than a quantitative approach which would include composers who composed something "of note" in the 21st century. See: Talk:String quartet for a distant example of this. Perhaps there is a better quantitative approach we could take, such as composers who lived most of their lives in the 21st century (or conceviably will)? Hyacinth 22:09, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Alternatively we could create a List of contemporary composers. Hyacinth 22:10, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I've removed Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, as he certainly isn't 21st century CLW 16:15, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

Anyone in favor of removing or at least separating out two groups of composers from the main list: (1) composers who lived past 2000 but wrote no significant pieces in the 21st century and (2) composers without Wikipedia articles? It seems that the list would be much more useful if it contained only composers of at least enough note that someone has written about them. --Myke Cuthbert 19:29, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Khrennikov still around?

Is Tikhon Khrennikov still around? I'd like to know, so that I can update the article on him accordingly, with information on his latest compositions, government jobs, etc. I did a Google search on him, and found a website confirming he was still alive in 1998, his 85th birthday. All the other search results were websites parroting the Wikipedia article (since I wrote that article, I ought to feel flattered, but I'm annoyed at not being able to find more current information). Grove Music Online doesn't list a death date for him yet... Mindspillage 20:46, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
As far as I am informed, he is still alive, because when Nikita Bogoslovsky died this spring, I saw an article announcing his death in which Khrennikov said something like "We'll miss him". --80.130.222.68 16:21, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC) (German User)

I added some hundred composers. I found the names in the Dutch and German wikipedia, encyclopedias and music books. 212.238.215.149 18:53, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Crietria for inclusion (more)

I think that it should be benefic for Wp to watch this list carefully because only true composers should be included in this listing. Many spurious or doubtful are listed, with very few result on a Google search.

I propose to cancel doubtful names, since we can have a true and evidenced biography.

Best wishes for the near next year--Sonusfaber 14:47, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree, some of these people have no google hits. I will remove all redlinked ones. Please re-add any that I may have erroneously deleted as non-notable. -Taco325i 13:00, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List still needs work

The list still includes many unverified or not notable enough entries. Also many names are out of order. S.dedalus 22:57, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Name change?

I would like to propose that this list be renamed “List of notable 21st century classical composers”. The reason is that this list can never be a complete list because there are just too many people in the 21st century that have written SOMETHING. Therefore there must be some criteria for determining notability in the list. I think the name “List of notable 21st century classical composers” would better reflect the fact that the list should include only composers found to be notable by Google search. Alternative should the list really be a list of every 21st century composer people can dig up? S.dedalus 05:53, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List Cleanup

I've decided I would help clean up this list. My focus will be on redlinked composers. Here's how I'm going to proceed; I will remove all redlinked composers from this list if I find nothing notable regarding said people off of the internet as per Wikipedia List Guidelines. — Dorvaq (talk) 16:56, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Addendum: Further to my initial post, I will write "Removed as per WP:LIW" in the edit history. — Dorvaq (talk) 16:58, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Addendum: I will leave hidden comments by the composers I am unsure of to allow those more knowledgeable in the field than I to decide whether or not to remove them. — Dorvaq (talk) 17:14, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Verified up to and including Miguel de Aguila. — Dorvaq (talk) 17:44, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
