Manchester has a recognisable skyline and a number of notable tall buildings and structures. The tallest buildings in Manchester are the 169 m (561 ft) Beetham Tower and the 118 m (387 ft) CIS Tower (which was once the tallest building in Europe).

Most of Manchester's towers were built during the sixties and seventies. However, in the last few years there has been a renewed interest in building skyscrapers in Manchester. Numerous residential, hotel and office developments are under construction or have recently been built in the city centre. The tallest building in the United Kingdom outside of London, the Beetham Tower, was completed in October 2006. It is 47 storeys and 169m / 561ft high and consists of residential apartments and a Hilton hotel.

Proposals for an even taller (58 storey, 188m) building near Piccadilly Station, known as the Inacity Tower, were recently approved by the City Council, as well as a 44 storey building close by called the Albany Crown Tower. Many other high rise buildings have been approved or are proposed for Manchester (as well as nearby Salford).

On the list of ten tallest buildings are the 19th Century Town Hall, the tallest town hall in the United Kingdom, and the Refuge Assurance Building (now more commonly known as the Palace Hotel) from the early 20th Century.
