List of string quartets by Béla Bartók
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hungarian composer Béla Bartók wrote six string quartets, each for the usual force of two violins, viola and cello. These string quartets are often considered, by many music connoisseurs, to be as intricate and clever as the later Beethoven string quartets. They are replete with humor, desolation, and beauty, all the while tinged with a very distinct Hungarian feel. They also extend the standard realm of the string instrument, adding, for example, Bartok Pizzicato (a type of pizzicato which is performed by pulling the string upwards then letting it rap against the fingerboard).
