- Latin
- Among the ancient Romans, daughters were often given as praenomina cardinal or ordinal numbers reflecting the order of their birth. Names such as Prima, Secunda, Tertia, Quarta, Quinta, etc. were thus extremely common. This practice was also used to a lesser extent with boys' names, then Primus, Secundus, Tertius, Quartus, Quintus, etc...
- English
- Children with the same name as a parent may be given a suffixed number II as an alternative to "Junior". II is also used if a child is given the same name as another relative, but not the parent (such as a grandparent or an uncle). Third and subsequent generations are almost universally given a number, such as William H. Gates III.

- Japanese
- It is common in Japanese for sons to be given names based on the order of their birth. There are variations, based on alternate readings (pronunciations) of the characters for numbers, but the following are some of the most common: Ichirō (一郎), Kōichi (幸一), Jirō (二郎), Saburō (三郎), Shirō (四郎), Gojirō (五次郎), Gorō (五郎).
- Kabuki actors, artists, and others who pass down art-names (gō) from generation to generation are often referred to with Roman numerals in English renderings. For example: Ichikawa Danjūrō V (五代目市川團十郎, Godaime Ichikawa Danjūrō), Utagawa Kunisada II (二代目歌川国定, Nidaime Utagawa Kunisada).
