Passwords are common in fiction, from the simple to the complex, and the deciphering or retrieval of these passwords often plays a large part of the plot.

- Doctor Who: There is nothing more useless than a lock with a voice print. (password set by Cardinal Barusa to open a secret door. The password was guessed and used by The Doctor to evade security escorts after he was elected president of the high council of the Time Lords.)

- Baldur's Gate: To gain entrance to the thieves' guild in the city of Baldur's Gate, the player has to say the password Fafhrd to the sentry at the door, a reference to Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.
- Larry 1: Ken sent me, to gain entrance to the door to the right in the bar. Password is written on the wall in WC.
