This is a list of fictional minor characters from Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse films and television series.
[edit] Bartleby and Loki
Bartleby and Loki are two characters from Dogma. They were portrayed by Good Will Hunting co-stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, respectively. Bartleby's name comes from the short story Bartleby the Scrivener and Loki's comes from the Norse god of the same name.
Back during the earliest days of earth, Bartleby became friends with Loki, the Angel of Death. After Loki finished slaughtering the first born Egyptians, the two went out for a drink. During a drunken conversation, Bartleby convinces Loki that he should give up slaughtering humans in the name of God. Loki, taking the advice seriously, presents himself before God, throws down his sword and gives God the finger, all while drunk. God, enraged by this act, banishes the two to a fate worse then Hell; spending eternity in Wisconsin. The two eventually find a loophole through plenary indulgence, thanks to a New Jersey church celebrating its bicentennial. The two decide to journey to New Jersey in hopes of getting into Heaven, not knowing that it will wipe out the universe in the process.
After a mishap on a bus, the two end up getting an update from the demon Azrael (played by Jason Lee) about Heaven and Hell's search for them and the threat of the Last Scion, Bethany Sloan (played by Linda Fiorentino). The two decide to take his advise to lay low. They take a train to New Jersey, which happens to have Bethany and her friends on it. The two then fight the group until they are thrown out of the moving train by Silent Bob. This is where Bartleby changes his upbeat sarcastic attitude to one of bitter rage against the Lord and Loki changes his attitude to a more nervous, insecure one. The two walk their way to Jersey and arrive just in time for the church's bicentennial celebration. They kill everyone at the event, knowing their souls will be clean once they enter the church. Bethany and company arrive at the scene to find a drunken, wingless Loki swirling around dead bodies while Bartleby hovers overhead. When Bartleby announces his plan to his foes, Loki turns a new leaf and tries to fight Bartleby, albeit a pathetic attempt. After a tragic goodbye, Bartleby literally and metaphorically stabs Loki in the back. After having his wings accidentally blown off by Jay, Bartleby heads for the church, but is interrupted by Metatron (Alan Rickman) and God herself (Alanis Morissette). Kneeling before her, Bartleby is killed by the sound of her voice, all other humans covering their ears at the time this happened. Whether they went to Heaven or Hell is debated.
Smith was talking about making a one-issue comic book about Bartleby and Loki. It would show the story of how the two were banished to Wisconsin. As of October 2006, the comic is still on his agenda.
A rumor was spread at one point the Bartleby would return in Clerks II in a brief cameo appearance. Affleck did make a cameo in the film, but as a new character.
[edit] Caitlin Bree
Caitlin Bree first appeared in the film Clerks. She was portrayed by Lisa Spoonhauer.
Caitlin was a college student who dated Dante Hicks. During their relationship, she cheated on Dante eight and a half times (the “half” being an incident when she slept with Dante at a party, thinking he was someone else). During the events depicted in Clerks., Dante wishes to rekindle their relationship, only to find out that she is engaged. Near the end of the film, Caitlin unexpectedly appears at the Quick Stop, explaining to Dante that she doesn’t want to get married, but wishes once again date him. However, she ends up having sex with a corpse in the store’s bathroom, believing it to be Dante. She is sent to a mental institution to deal with her trauma, effectively ending any chance of a new relationship with Dante. She later emerged from her catatonia when Dante visits her in Clerks: The Comic Book.
It was revealed in Chasing Amy that Caitlin and Alyssa Jones had a homosexual relationship that included fisting.
Caitlin reappeared in two episodes of Clerks: The Animated Series. Here, it is revealed that she cheated on Dante with a series of industrial painters, took Dante's virginity in the backseat of a car (while being filmed by Randal Graves), manned a kissing booth at an area carnival, and became engaged to a man she had just met.
- The scene where Dante confronts Caitlin about her marriage was filmed in one shot that lasts for over five minutes. It was shot on the first night of filming.
- Kevin Smith, an avid Degrassi fan, named the character after his favorite character on the series, Caitlin Ryan.
[edit] Emma Bunting
Emma Bunting appears in a supporting role in Clerks II. She is played by Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, wife of Kevin Smith.
Emma was engaged to Dante Hicks. It is established that she met Dante after he began working at the Mooby's restaurant, meaning their relationship and time dating until engagement lasted less than a year. Emma was the typical popular, attractive, rich girl in high school, leading her to a series of disappointing relationships as she dated the popular guys. She eventually learned to seek the "unconventional" men for a relationship, leading her to Dante.
The events of Clerks II takes place a day before Emma and Dante were to leave for Florida. When they arrived, they were to temporarily reside in Emma's parent's house until the wedding. As a wedding gift, the couple were to be given their own house by Emma's parents, and Dante was to manage one of many car washes, of which Emma's father owned a chain.
She legitimately loved Dante, often putting up with annoyances such as Randal Graves and a general disdain for New Jersey in order to be with him. Her controlling personality, however, led to conflict, despite Dante's tendency to be indecisive. Against their previous plans to set a wedding date after arriving in Florida, Emma decided on a date herself and created wedding invitations without Dante's immediate knowledge. Her relationship with Dante ended when she arrived late the Mooby's restaurant with a cake, only to walk in on Dante and Becky Scott in a passionate kiss. She angrily assaults him and throws the cake in his face (at the suggestion of Jay), and leaves, throwing her engagement ring at Becky.
[edit] Rick Derris
Rick Derris first appeared in Clerks. and is an important character in the Askewniverse. He was played by Ernest O'Donnell, a childhood friend of Kevin Smith.
Rick Derris is a sexual deviant in the Askewniverse. In Clerks., he reveals to Dante Hicks that he had sex with his ex-girlfriend Caitlin Bree during their five year relationship and presumably has sex with Heather Jones (middle of the three Jones sisters) on a beach. In Mallrats, Gwen Turner, T.S. Quint and Brodie Bruce recall an incident at a costume party in which Derris and Turner had sex on a pool table. While Turner thinks it was a trivial event, Bruce and Quint remember the event very well because the two were dressed as Jackie Gleason and Burt Reynolds, respectively, from Smokey and the Bandit. In the most memorable and important sexual act, he and Cohee London were in a three-way with Alyssa Jones during high school, which gave her the nickname "Finger Cuffs".
Derris' fate after Clerks has never been directly revealed. It is possible that, due to the fact that characters in Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ride a bus from buses labeled Derris, that he started a successful line of buses.

Lance Dowds appears in the film Clerks II. He was portrayed by Jason Lee.
Lance went to high school with Dante Hicks and Randal Graves. In his freshman year, Lance went through an initiation process created by the senior class, in which he was forced to insert a pickle into his anus and walk ten feet. If the pickle was to fall out, he had to take a bite out, reinsert it, and try again until successful. After taking four bites of the pickle, Lance was able to walk the ten feet. However, from that day, he was known by the nickname "Pickle Fucker", and the relentless teasing of his classmates caused him to become an angry and bitter person.
After graduating high school, Lance became an Internet multi-millionaire through a search engine (the fictitious "MadDucats.com") he created which allowed users to find items for the lowest prices online. The site was sold to Amazon.com for $20 million, a fact he proudly dangles in front of his former tormentors as revenge.
[edit] Julie Dwyer
Julie Dwyer was first mentioned in Clerks. as an old high school friend of Dante Hicks and Randal Graves who passed away at a swimming pool at a YMCA. Her funeral scene was eventually shown (in animated form), in Clerks: The Lost Scene, which appeared on the Clerks X DVD set. In Mallrats (which took place the day before Clerks.), Dwyer is told that the camera adds 10 pounds, so she over-exercises before her appearance on the game show "Truth or Date", which leads to her death. She was also mentioned in Chasing Amy, and Clerks II.
[edit] Cardinal Ignatius Glick
Cardinal Glick is a character from Dogma. He was played by legendary stand up comic George Carlin.
Glick was the head minister of a local New Jersey church that is celebrating its bicentennial. In hopes to get publicity for this event, Glick announces the Catholicism WOW! campaign which he uses to update the Catholic church for a younger generation. The leading symbol of the campaign is the Buddy Christ, which Glick describes as a more realistic depiction of Jesus Christ than the Christ-on-a-Cross depiction. His campaign is nearly put in jeopardy when the film's main characters Bethany, Rufus and Jay and Silent Bob try to stop the centennial celebration so that the two fallen angels Bartleby and Loki can't carry through with their plenary indulgence plan. Glick refuses to comply due to his needs for the WOW campaign. The two angels do arrive at the celebration and kill all in attendance, including Glick. Whether Glick is resurrected at the end of the film when God uses her powers to return the church to normal is never explained.
Glick can be seen briefly in a few panels of Chasing Dogma.
[edit] Elias Grover
Elias Grover appears in the film Clerks II. He was portrayed by Trevor Fehrman. He is a 19-year-old born again Christian employee at the Mooby's fast food restaurant in Leonardo, New Jersey. Elias is obsessed with both The Lord of the Rings and Transformers and is subjected to Randal's jokes.
Elias has a girlfriend called Myra Hodgekiss, but he confides in Randal that they have not consummated their relationship because she convinced him that she has a troll hidden in her vagina named "Pillow-pants" and one in her mouth named "Listerfiend." The trolls, Elias believes, will bite off anything he puts in her vagina or mouth before her 21st birthday. He also shares the same last name with the character Walt "The Fanboy" Grover. It is unknown whether the two are related.
At the end of the film, he applies for a job at RST Video and becomes a clerk there after Dante Hicks and Randal Graves reopen the Quick Stop.
[edit] Tricia Jones
Tricia Jones first appeared in the film Mallrats. She was portrayed by Renee Humphrey.
Tricia is the 15-year-old sister of Alyssa Jones and the author of Boregasm, a look into the sex drive of men between the ages of 14 and 35, which was later made into a movie.
While writing the book, she kept a journal of all the men with whom she had sex, and video taped every experience. The archived videos were used to help Brodie Bruce win back his ex-girlfriend, Rene, from his arch-nemesis Shannon Hamilton.
Upon Brodie's urgent request, she gave Jay the tape of her sexual encounter with Shannon. Silent Bob was able to hack into the video output and play the tape during the live taping of Truth or Date. Shannon was thereafter arrested for statutory rape.
In the comic series Chasing Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob are seen living with Tricia, only to be kicked out after months of loafing around (and after Jay spied on her in the shower). It is revealed that she had fornicated with Silent Bob as part of research for Boregasm.
Tricia is briefly mentioned in Chasing Amy, when her sister Alyssa Jones informed Holden McNeil via telephone that her "sister is in town," to which McNeil replies, "the one who wrote the book?" Tricia also makes a brief appearance in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, where she discuses The Bluntman and Chronic Movie with Alyssa.
[edit] Shannon Hamilton
Shannon Hamilton is a character from Mallrats played by Ben Affleck
In the film, Shannon is the manager of the Eden Praire Mall's Fashionable Male clothing store. He is the arch enemy of Brodie Bruce (played by Jason Lee), a local mallrat and a major character in the film. It is revealed that Shannon is dating Bruce's ex-girlfriend Rene Mosier (played by Shannen Doherty), who dumped Bruce that morning and also has "no respect for people with no shopping agenda". Shannon later confronts Bruce and beats him severely, saying that he likes comforting girls on the rebound of unsuccessful relationships so that he can "fuck them in an uncomfortable place", which Bruce asks if its like the back of a Volkswagen. This becomes a running joke in the film. Also, Tricia Jones (played by Rene Humphrey) reveals that she had sex with Hamilton as research for her book Borgasm: A Study of the 90s Male Sexual Prowess. She even taped their sexuall encounter, which would eventually do Hamilton in. During the Truth or Date game show, Bruce announces his love for Rene, which sets Hamilton off. Just before he can strike Bruce, Silent Bob starts a video tape of Hamilton and Tricia Jones' anal sex-capade that is played on the Truth or Date big screens. When Bruce tells the police that Jones is 15 years old, "Aw I thought she was 36!" Hamilton is arrested for statutory rape. During the conclusion, it is said that "Hamilton made a lot of friends at the Rahway State Correctional Facility" and see a hand wrap around Hamilton’s, with "Love" written of his fingers (in the 10th Anniversary cut, we see Shannon scream in agony, likely getting a taste of his own medicine).
Shannon is mentioned in Chasing Amy, when Alyssa Jones says he had sex with her in college, only to have a tape of their sexual intercourse be broadcast all over campus. In Clerks: The Comic Book, Shannon's face is seen on a milk carton which says he is missing.
When Kevin Smith was talking about making a sequel to Mallrats with the comic book Mallrats 2: Die Hard in a Mall, he stated that Hamilton would be the main villain.
[edit] Hooper "X" LaMante
Hooper LaMante (a.k.a Hooper X) is a character from Chasing Amy, notable for being one of the first black characters in the View Askewniverse. He was played by Dwight Ewell. He is named after Richard Dreyfuss' character in Jaws, of which Kevin Smith is a huge fan.
In Chasing Amy, he appears on a panel discussion at a comic convention for his comic book "White Hating Coon". In front of his fans, Hooper displays a violent, Spike Lee-esque anti white man attitude. During the panel, he gets into an argument with audience members and fellow comic book creators Holden McNeil (played by Ben Affleck) and Banky Edwards (played by Jason Lee) over the Star Wars trilogy, culminating in his declaration that the trilogy is racist because the implication of Darth Vader's black mask being removed to reveal an old white man suggests that all black people secretly want to be white. Banky asks "But isn't that true?" upon which Hooper pulls out a gun, knocks over the podium and "shoots" Banky while screaming "Black rage! Black rage!" The audience clears out and the whole thing is revealed to be a hoax played on the fans by Hooper, Banky and Holden. When the three are by themselves, Hooper reveals his true personality; a somewhat effeminate gay man. Also during this time, another comic creator Alyssa Jones (played by Joey Lauren Adams) is introduced to Banky and Holden by Hooper, which starts the main story line.
Later in the movie, Holden and Banky arrive at a club after being invited by Hooper, who works at the bar. During that night, Banky and Holden realize that Hooper is not the only gay person at the club when they see Alyssa kiss a fellow female clubber (played by Carmen Lee).
Hooper and Holden are later seen shopping for CDs, where Holden seeks advice on how to deal with his "more than friendly" relationship with Alyssa. He responds with trying to respect Alyssa’s sexuality and trying to not worry about it.
Hooper is seen again at the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, walking out of the premiere of the Bluntman and Chronic: The Movie with Banky. While Banky is in shock of the fact that the movie will ruin him, Hooper says that the movie was like "watching Batman and Robin all over again". In a cut scene that extends their appearance, it is revealed that the two are dating, with Banky being slightly ashamed and closeted about his homosexuality.
[edit] Steve-Dave Pulasti and Walt "the Fanboy" Grover
Steve-Dave Pulasti (usually referred to as Steve-Dave) and Walt the Fanboy made their first appearance in Mallrats. They are played by Smith's longtime friends Bryan Johnson and Walt Flanagan, respectively. Walt has a signature catchphrase; whenever Steve-Dave argues with a character, his comments will be followed by Walt saying "Tell 'em Steve-Dave!"
In Mallrats, Steve-Dave is seen working at the Comic Toast, a comic book store in the Eden Prairie Mall, with Walt being a loyal costumer and lackey. In a cut scene from Chasing Amy, we see that Pulasti moved the store to its own location. The window of this store was broken by Banky Edwards after he and Walt trashed his comic book, but fixed thanks to a check attached to the trash can Edwards threw at the window, which was worth three times as much as the window itself. The two were seen protesting abortion in Dogma Walt and Steve-Dave have also appeared Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in a cut scene in which Steve-Dave tells Brodie Bruce that his comic book store sucks, when Brodie threatens to ban them both he responds "please unban us, this guy will suck your dick" pushing Walt's head OC, Brodie then responds "I'm sure he will" and angrily leaving the Bluntman and Chronic movie at the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
Steve-Dave and Walt have appeared in most of the comic books based of the Askewniverse. In Walt Flanagan's Dog, the two are seen practicing strip comic book trivia, in hopes that they will get two comic book challenged girls to play with them. It is debated whether or not the Walt Flanagan in question is Walt the Fanboy or another character, due to Walt the Fanboy's last name being Grover. In Clerks: The Comic Book, the two are seen selling Star Wars action figures and Steve-Dave offering Walt's services in exchange for a new wave of action figures. In Clerks: The Holiday Special, Steve-Dave makes Walt wrap his mother's Christmas presents (old comic books no one will buy). In Chasing Dogma, the two kick Jay and Silent Bob out of their store for loitering.
The two appeared in three episodes of the Clerks animated series (none of which aired) and a Jay and Silent Bob MTV short. The two have also been made into inaction figures.
[edit] T.S. Quint
T.S. Quint (refered to as T.S. by friends) is one of the main characters in Mallrats. He was portrayed by Jeremy London.
In the film, T.S. is having trouble with his girlfriend Brandi Svenning (potrayed by Claire Forlani) dealing with her extremely protective father (played by Michael Rooker). He tries to convince her to go to Orlando, Florida, where he planned to propose to her at Universal Studios while on the Jaws ride (when Jaws popped out of the water). This was ruined, however, when Brandi had to fill in for Julie Dwyer on her father's Truth or Date television pilot. T.S., showing his frustration, causes Brandi to break up with him.
Filled with despair, T.S. joins fellow newly dumped friend Brodie Bruce (played by Jason Lee) on a day trip to the Eden Prairie Mall. Amongst many activities, the two realize that Mr. Svenning's Truth or Date is being filmed live at the mall that evening. After being kicked out by mall security under Svenning's orders, Brodie and T.S. get sage-like advise from a topless psychic in a dirt mall and return to Eden Prairie to stop the dating show. The duo successfully sabotage the show and T.S. finally proposes to Brandi, ending up with the two sharing a kiss.
In an epilogue to the film, it is revealed that T.S. and Brandi got married after they graduated at Universal Studios in Florida. They share their first husband-to-wife kiss just as Jaws pops out of the water.
In the 10th anniversary edition of Mallrats, the story is altered slightly; while at the 37th Annual Governor's Ball, T.S., dressed as a Revolutionary Soldier for a musical at the event, gets a musket tied up in Brandi's hair while on the roof of the high school where the event is being held. The governor’s security believe it's an assassination attempt and the event turns into a shoot out. The governor is injured and ruins the chance of Svenning getting a check from her. Throughout this version, people in the mall recognize T.S. from television, to which he responds "I got a musket tied up in my girlfriend's hair for God's sakes".
[edit] Rebbecca "Becky"/"Becks" Scott
Rebbecca Scott, typically referred to as Becky, or Becks by Dante Hicks and Randal Graves, is a lead female character in Clerks II. She is played by Rosario Dawson.
A manager at the Mooby's, Becks only took a job at the restaurant temporarily, with the intention of earning money for the chemotherapy of her uncle. As his treatment continued, she remained for years until she moved up to become the establishment's boss. She resents the job, openly expressing her intention to leave as soon as her uncle recovers.
She is fairly open with her sexual experiences, speaking comfortably with Dante on the subject of ass-to-mouth acts. She still withholds the fact that she has done the act herself, however, only revealing it to Dante when she mistakenly believes Randal to be out of earshot. She loudly relates a story of having to serve a man she gave oral sex to after Junior Prom in high school in front of several customers, and explains her disbelief in romantic love, instead deciding that life and relationships are about "fucking as much as possible;" accusing society of peddling marriage and families in order to sustain the economy.
Since the arrival of Dante and Randal at the Mooby's, she grew a connection with the former, while frequently arguing with the latter, sometimes taking advantage of her higher position to force Randal to do trivial tasks around the restaurant. As the Mooby's is usually quite empty, she spends most of her day in her office with Dante, talking while he paints her toe-nails. It is revealed that a few weeks before the events of Clerks II, she and Dante got drunk and had sex on Randal's food preparation table. She becomes pregnant with his child, but has no problem keeping it a secret from Dante's then-fiancee Emma. Dante later reveals his love for her, which, after some time, she reciprocates despite her declarations against the notion of romantic love. After Emma sees the two kissing and leaves Dante, he proposes to Becks in the Mooby's drive through, to which she says yes. She is last seen visibly pregnant, helping Dante and Randal restore the Quick Stop.
[edit] Gwen Turner
Gwen Turner is a supporting character in Mallrats. She was portrayed by Joey Lauren Adams.
Turner was the former girlfriend of T.S Quint, one of the main characters played by Jeremy London. While Gwen wasn't very faithful to Quint, she still expressed that he was a good catch in retrospect.
Throughout Mallrats, Gwen is seen interacting with T.S. and Brodie Bruce. Her clothes shopping is often interrupted by Silent Bob crashing into her dressing room as she is changing. She also causes a major story point when she convinces Brandi Svenning (Claire Forlani) that T.S. was a great boyfriend.
Gwen has been mentioned in other View Askew media. In Chasing Amy, Alyssa Jones mentioned that she left her prom so that she could have sex with her 26 year old date Shannon Hamilton, portrayed by Ben Affleck, and Gwen in a limo her parents had rented. This is ironic, being that both Alyssa and Gwen are played by Joey Lauren Adams. Also, in the Clerks comic book Where's the Beef?, Randal mentions that Dante Hicks tried to impress Gwen by wearing a Batman costume and standing on a roof top.
[edit] Marshal Willenholly
Federal Wildlife Marshal Willenholly is a character from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. His name comes from Land of the Lost's three main characters Rick Marshal, Will and Holly (in a deleted scene, Willenholly called a FBI agent named Sid N. Marty (played by comedian Adam Carolla), a reference to Sid and Marty Krofft, who created Land of the Lost). The character was portrayed by Will Ferrell.
After the film's heroes are framed for a jewel heist, Willenholly arrives to investigate the lesser crime that involved the two in the theft of an orangutan named Susanne from the Provasic animal testing facility. Willenholly, along with a slew of Utah state police officers (the lead played by Brat Pack member Judd Nelson) catch the three at the local Arena diner. When Jay and Bob come out with Susanne (dressed as a child), the claim that "he" is their gay love child. Willenholly lets them go, not realizing that the kid was a monkey until they are long gone. Willenholly follows them into the sewers and into the duct of a dam. Susanne manages to trick Willenholly jump out of the duct and into the water so that she, Jay and Bob can escape.
Willenholly later arrives at the station house, soaked from head to toe. There he receives information that Jay and Bob are going to Hollywood. He ends up on Miramax studios, searching for the two and has a few near fatal mishaps on the way. When Willenholly finds the two on the set of the Bluntman and Chronic movie, he engages in a shootout with the female gang that actually pulled off the jewel heist. After knocking out the three other members of the gang, the fourth member Justice (Shannon Elizabeth) gives Willenholly the diamonds, confesses to the heist and asks for a reduced sentence so that she could get off to be with Jay. Willenholly, hoping it will boost his career, agrees. Willenholly and Justice are later seen walking out of the Bluntman and Chronic movie premiere, Willenholly being the only character to say anything positive about the film. He is also seen dancing at the Morris Day and the Time concert.
The character is a dimwitted version of the Chasing Dogma character Sam "Mad Dog" Gavert. Similarities between the two include:
- Both incorrectly call the orangutan a monkey
- Both are tricked by the assumption that Jay and Bob are gay.
- Both make two references to The Fugitive; one reference to the famous "house speech", though Willenholly's was cut from the film and both parody the famous dam scene and end up being tricked into jumping into the water, though Mad Dog's fall was fatal. Mad Dog's design was also based on The Fugitive star Tommy Lee Jones.
