Metafiction is a kind of fiction which contains references to the fiction writing process, for example an author including his notes as part of the work. This is a partial list of works using various metafictional ideas.

- There have also been suggestions that DC Comics' character the Joker may in fact be a metafictional character, suggested by moments when the Joker "breaks the fourth wall" and addresses (or seems to address) the reader audience. This is further heightened in the cartoon adaptations in which the Joker (voiced by Mark Hamill) speaks and refers to the audience when no one else is around. (However, this may be due to the character's insanity)
