[edit] Free and open-source software

There is a discussion of open-source machine translation software at the Wikimedia Machine Translation Project. In summary, there are some good dictionary software/data and some reasonable translation memories, but no fully fledged open source systems yet.

  • Apertium is an open-source shallow-transfer machine translation platform (that is, engine and toolbox). Language pairs include Spanish-Catalan, Spanish-Galician, Spanish-Portuguese, Catalan-Occitan(Aranese), Catalan-French. It is part of the larger OpenTrad project for open source machine translation between Spanish languages (Spanish/Galician/Catalan/Basque/Occitan).
  • Linguaphile does stemming followed by dictionary look up to give a word-to-word translation.
  • Logos Open Source Machine Translation is a commercial system that is currently being released as open-source. Language pairs include: en/de-fr/it/sp/pt. OpenLogos Page
  • Carabao Machine Translation DIY Kit is a free system which allows building your own dictionaries and rules in N-gram fashion. Its model is suitable for virtually any language
  • libtranslate and Gnome Translate are software packages to translate a text or web page between several natural languages. They can automatically detect the source language as you type. Currently the translation engines are web-based translation services.
  • PSMT A simple implementation of statistical machine translation written in Prolog. LGPL licence.
  • Moses A phrase-based statistical machine translation written in C++. It allows the decoding of confusion networks and features factored translation models. LGPL license.
  • Phramer An extensible phrase-based statistical machine translation written in Java. BSD license.
