List of honorary British Knights

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an incomplete list of people who have been created honorary Knights (or Dames) by the British crown, as well as those who have been raised to the two comparable Orders of Chivalry (Order of Merit and Order of the Companions of Honour) and the Royal Victorian Chain, which do not carry titles.

Honorary awards are made to people who are not citizens of countries that acknowledge the British Sovereign as their head of state. They cannot use the titles of "Sir" or "Dame", but can use the initials of the awards after their names. If such people later acquire British nationality or the nationality of another Commonwealth Realm, then their awards are usually made substantive, and in the case of knighthoods and dameships they can begin to use the titles.

Citizens of a country which was a full part of the British Empire when they received the honour (i.e. who were British subjects at the time) were substantive knights or dames, not honorary, although some chose not to use their title after their country became independent. Citizens of British protectorates and mandated territories, however, received honorary awards. Before 1947, Indian princes and citizens of the princely states were made substantive members of the two Indian orders (Order of the Star of India and Order of the Indian Empire), but honorary members of the other orders. Other Indians, however, were made substantive members of all orders.

In recent years, the following numbers of Honorary Knights and Dames have been created (other than Knights and Dames in the Royal Victorian Order, which is the Queen's personal prerogative).

[edit] Notes

  1. ^ a b c d e f g h The term "British subject" in this context refers to a subject of Her Majesty in right of the United Kingdom. Since 1983, this includes British citizens, British overseas territories citizens, British Overseas citizens, British Nationals (Overseas) and British subjects under the British Nationality Act 1981. See British nationality law. Between 1949 and 1982 the term referred to Citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies together with British subjects under the British Nationality Act 1948. See History of British nationality law
  2. ^ a b c British nationality was automatically lost by naturalisation in a non-Commonwealth country (such as the United States) prior to 1 January 1949. See History of British nationality law
  3. ^ Australian citizenship was in general automatically lost by adult naturalization in another country before 4 April 2002
  4. ^ British Dependent Territories citizens solely connected with Hong Kong by birth, descent or naturalisation lost that status on 30 June 1997 if a citizen of another country, including the Peoples Republic of China. This provision applied to most ethnic Chinese British nationals in Hong Kong. Those who wished to do so were allowed to retain British nationality by registering for British National (Overseas) status by 1997, but this was optional. See British nationality law and Hong Kong. Those former British Dependent Territories citizens who have acquired British National (Overseas) status remain eligible for substantive knighthoods. In all other cases a knighthood awarded on or after 1 July 1997 is honorary if the recipient is not otherwise a British national or citizen of another Commonwealth Realm.
