- John O'Donnell-Rosales - Cuban author, poet and journalist, escaped from Cuba with the remnants of his family after years of persecution for their political and religious views.
- Reinaldo Arenas - Cuban novelist. Became a refugee in the USA after years of persecution for his sexual orientation and opposition to Castro. His autobiography, Before Night Falls, was on the New York Times list of the ten best books of the year 1993 and was made into a film in 2000.
