False friends, faux amis, or false cognates are words that may sound similar in two or more languages but in actuality mean different things. Below is a list of false friends, and may prove very useful when learning a new language.

The list does not include words that have different meanings in British and American English. These can be found at List of words having different meanings in British and American English.
