List of energy blades

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following is a list of fictional melee weapons which use forms of coherent energy to inflict damage, similar to the lightsabers of the Star Wars series.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Manga and anime

  • In the Bleach manga series, characters of the bow-wielding Quincy race use an energy blade known as Seele Schneider to fight opponents with defenses too strong for their arrows to destroy. The energy blade itself can also be launched as a projectile if necessary. In the same series, minor filler character Maki Ichinose wields a zanpakuto with a glowing blade made of light.
  • In the Gundam series, beam saber and numerous variant (beam shield, beam katana, beam trident, beam boomerang, beam axe and etc.) are all main melee weapons of mobile suits. Some beam sabers, notably those of the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, can function as beam guns when not in use. They work by containing superheated plasma within a Minovsky Particle I-Field, which functions to keep the plasma of the beam saber in whilst keeping the contents of other sabers out, in effect blocking it as in a normal sword fight.
  • In Mamoru Nagano's manga, Five Star Stories, the Headdliners, pilots of the giant robots known as Mortar Headds, carry energy blades called Spadds on their person. These resemble lightsabers very closely. Interestingly, the Mortar Headds themselves are also equipped with scaled-up versions of the same weapon; these are referred to by the same name.
  • In the Tenchi Muyo! series, the main protagonist, Tenchi Masaki, comes into possession of the Tenchi-ken ('Sword Tenchi' in the English language version), a sword hilt with an extensible energy blade. Ryoko, Kagato, and Washu Hakubi (in the OVA storyline) are capable of creating and using similar energy blades. These blades have the same activation sound effect as Star Wars lightsabers. In the second TV series, Shin Tenchi Muyo! (Tenchi in Tokyo in the English version), Tenchi's Tenchi-ken has more of a resembalance to a Crystal Sword than a Lightsaber. In the spinoff series Tenchi Muyo! GXP, four of the characters Seina Yamada (Episode 23), Seiryo Tennan, Kyo Komachi, and Tarant Shank have used Lightersaber-style devices.
  • In the Dirty Pair movie, Project Eden, Professor Wattsman's butler, Bruno, uses a collapsible sword that then is covered with an energy field. Kei uses the discarded weapon for the climax of the film The field has been shown to both stun and slice, though definitely not all powerful since a metal Bowie knife managed to keep it at bay.
  • In the OVA Dirty Pair Flash, Yuri utilizes an energy sword with a retractable blade (which occasionally runs out of power due to its utilizing a battery-like power cartridge) as her weapon of choice.
The Raijin no Ken being used by Rokusho Aoi in Naruto
The Raijin no Ken being used by Rokusho Aoi in Naruto
  • In the Naruto series, the ninja Aoi Rokusho utilizes the Raijin no Ken (Thunder God Sword) which has a hilt shaped like a Kongōshō and an extendable energy blade. The blade makes a humming sound similar to a lightsabre's when swung. Asuma Sarutobi can extend his trench knives' blades using chakra, achieving an effect similar to an energy blade. Also, Orochimaru's Kusanagi sword has a blade that glows with a greenish-white light at times, making it look much like an energy sword (though it is not actually one).
  • In Slayers, Gourry Gabriev carries a weapon known as the hikari no ken, the "sword of light". A blade made of pure magical energy extends from the silver-colored hilt. The long, metal blade normally attached to the hilt is just camouflage, though it is strong and well-forged enough to serve as an effective weapon.
  • The eponymous hero of the Ulysses 31 animated series wields a combined laser pistol / energy sword.
  • In the Yu Yu Hakusho series, Kazuma Kuwabara has the ability to manifest the Rei-Ken (Translated as Spirit Sword in the English version), a beam of focused Reiki (Translated as Spirit Energy), from his hands. He can manifest either one or two. Also one of the other characters Hiei has also demonstrated this ability on three different occasions as well, but with yoki (Translated as Demon Energy) instead.
  • In the OVA Fight! Iczer One, Iczer One and Iczer Two both wield lightsaber type weapons.
  • In Rockman.EXE (released in US as Mega Man NT Warrior), both Rock Man (Mega Man) and Blues (Proto Man) wield flexible sword energy weapon attachments throughout the series and in their battle against one another.
  • In the OVA Read or Die, the hard-nosed clone of Hiraga employs elements of electricity; among these is the ability to create blades of pure electricity for use in close-quarters combat.
  • In Lost Universe, by the creators of (and loosely related to) Slayers, Kain Blueriver has a weapon called a Psiblade, controlled by powerful psychic energy. Its appearance is similar to a light saber, though it can also fire a beam and has a variable length.
  • In Vandread, Rizu, the commander of the Mission Delta-6, uses an energy blade although its cutting power is not comparable to that of a lightsaber.
  • In Dragonball Z, the character Vegetto formed his Ki into a "Ki no Tsurugi" (Flash Sword, Spirit Sword, Beam Sword), a blade of pure energy (bright, humming yellow) formed around Vegetto's right hand and 20 feet in length, and used it to attack Super Buuhan (Super Buu with Mystic Gohan absorbed).
  • In Kiba, a type of weapon which is designed as a hilt with the other end that can be flicked open to house a number of Shards of its welder at the base of the blade , generating energy blade of red, purple or yellow hue. This is a commonly used weapon by most Shard Casters and soldiers of Tempura/Templar and Jimoto.
  • In Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger, the lead character Bakumaru uses a sword that looks like a lightsaber.
  • In Tobe! Isami, the title character Isami Hanaoka wields a sword that is similar to a lightsaber.
  • In Digimon, MagnaAngemon has a beamsword that opens the gate of destiny. Another character MagnaGarurumon possesses a lightsaber-type weapon as well.
  • In SoulTaker, the main character uses a beam saber that sounds like a lightsaber. It even has a green blade.
  • In Phantom Quest Corp, the main character, Ayaka Kisaragi, wields a weapon with the rather unwieldy name of the Ko-Ryu-Rei-Fuu-Sei-Ken, which is in essence, a magic-based lightsaber-like weapon concealed as a lipstick tube.

[edit] Other comics

  • The Batman villain Firefly sometimes is seen wielding a "Flame saber" which looks and functions like a lightsaber. The only real difference is the blade's fire-based nature.

[edit] Other literature

  • In Larry Niven's Known Space series of books, "variable-swords" are mentioned. The variable-sword uses a mono-molecular filament, reinforced by a Slaver stasis field that makes it perfectly rigid and able to cut through virtually any material (except another stasis field, and thus the blade of another variable-sword), which is capable of being wound and unwound from the handle in a way similar to a variable-length lightsaber. In the same series of books, characters make use of "flashlight-lasers" as personal side arms, as well as variable-length, variable intensity tools for illumination, cutting and localized heating.
  • In the Margaret Weis Star of the Guardians series, those of the "Blood Royal" are capable of wielding the "bloodsword", which has a silver handle from which a long blue blade of energy emerges. This blade can also be shifted to a transparent shield setting. Blade and shield can be activated and switched with a thought, as the bloodsword contains nanomachines which are injected into the user's bloodstream, establishing a direct link between brain and sword. These nanomachines are also used to drain the body's reserves of ATP when the sword's limited power cell is exhausted. Finally, those without royal blood can only use the sword for a very limited time, before the nanomachines inspire a particularly virulent form of cancer.
  • In Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, Death and Susan wield a humming sword so sharp that it can cut through anything, or even sever the soul from the body, which is reportedly influenced by lightsabers.
  • In Stephen King's novel Wolves of the Calla, the fifth installment of his Dark Tower series, the titular Wolves carrying with them what the villagers of Calla Bryn Sturgis call "light-sticks". The Hobbit heroes Bilbo and Frodo Baggins use an elven blade nicknamed "Sting". Another hero, the human Aragorn, uses a sword named Andúril that shines with its own light. While not "energy blades" in any sense, the imagery is similar to laser swords or lightsabers. In The Lord of the Rings, the ancient demon called the Balrog uses a sword and a whip, both of flame.
  • In the book Eragon by Christopher Paolini, during the battle in the dwarf mountain-city of Tronjheim, Eragon conjures blue fire along his sword, similar to a lightsaber.

[edit] Games

[edit] Role-playing games and miniature wargames

  • In the science fiction role-playing game, Alternity, published by TSR, Inc., one of the most powerful melee weapons available is the star sword. This weapon creates a magnetic field in the shape of a sword and fills it with white-hot plasma.
  • In the third edition of the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game, a magical enhancement for bladed weapons is called brilliant energy. The blade of such a weapon gives off light like a torch and can pass though non-living, inanimate matter without harming it. Thus, brilliant energy weapons ignore a target's armor, but they cannot harm undead, constructs or objects. Melee weapons and projectiles (such as arrows) can be enhanced with this ability, but the bows, crossbows or slings that would launch such projectiles cannot.
  • Also, in the Expanded Psionics Handbook for the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game, Soulknives become a base class. They have the ability to create a blade of psionic energy from their subconscious. In Races of Eberron, two Kalashtar are seen wielding these blades in a battle against a dark cleric.
  • In the first and second editions of Dungeons and Dragons, light sabers were detailed as artifacts in a few modules set in the Blackmoor setting.
  • In the third edition of Dungeons and Dragons, the purple dragon from the Dragon Compendium Vol. 1 can shape its breath weapon into an energy blade, which it can use the slash its opponents as melee touch attacks and deal half its breath weapon's damage.
  • In various editions of the Gamma World role-playing game, 'vibroswords' are available. These weapons, despite their names, are described as having glowing blades formed of force fields and are essentially identical to lightsabers.
  • In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the C'Tan possess a weapon called a phase blade, which is superficially similar to a lightsaber, but works using a totally different mechanism involving the Warp. Some sources mention variants of Power Swords that are more mechanically similar to lightsabers. However, they are a "normal" sword with technology incorporated into them to make them able to slice through armour. There is also weapons called lightning claws, consisting of huge armoured gloves armed with three power sword blades mounted on them. They are invariably wielded in twos. There also exist "force weapons," Power Swords or Halberds (axes) that are attuned to the wielder's psychic field.
  • In the post-apocalyptic game Rifts by Palladium Books, there are flame swords that extend from a hilt that is powered by a gem, a 'Light Blade', as well as Psi-swords wielded by Cyber-knights with the ability to deflect energy blasts.
  • In White Wolf's Mage: the Ascension role-playing game, it is possible for mages who possess the power of the Prime Sphere to form weapons out of pure Quintessence, the primal energy of the universe. The result is a glowing weapon, seemingly made of pure light, which does extra damage to supernatural creatures.
  • In the Exalted role-playing game, beam klaves are available to Alchemical Exalt characters. These weapons are described as blades of pure Essence, a magical energy used in many aspects of Exalt combat.
  • In the game Chronotrigger, the main character "Chrono" can find or purchase a "lightning sword", which channels energy into a wound. There is also a "Demon Edge" available, which forces more energy in, and does more damage against Mages.

[edit] Computer and video games

  • In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for GameCube/Wii, Link will upgade the Master Sword to repel darkness very late in the game. When you enter the Twilight Realm, the Master Sword will glow yellow and looks almost like a lightsaber; indoors it will glow blue. You use the "light sword" to throw back curtains of darkness that turn you into the wolf.
  • In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the Nintendo 64, when Link takes the form of the Fierce Deity, he wields a sword that will shoot magic-consuming energy beams at the enemy. This form is only usable in bosses, however.
  • In Metroid Prime for GameCube, the villainous Space Pirates use Wrist-Mounted Bayonets, which are similarly activated and extend a blade of energy.
  • In the Virtual On series, several Virturoids utilize Beam Weapons (Swords, Scythes, and Tonfas). Many of them consist of an energy field around a solid core, but others are pure lightsaber-style weapons. Most of them can also project an energy wave at opponents.
  • In Deus Ex, the main character, as well as many Men in Black, may use a lightsaber-like weapon called the Dragon's Tooth. The Dragon's Tooth is not actually an energy blade, but rather a three-dimensional mesh created by millions upon millions of nano-bots that continually re-arrange themselves to keep the edge of the blade razor-sharp.
  • In Gotcha Force for the GameCube, many characters wield beam swords as a form of attack, although they are shaped more like a traditional sword than a lightsaber. However, the character Metal Hero has a light blue sword which is the same as a lightsaber in appearance, coloring, and attack method.
  • In System Shock and System Shock 2, the main character can use a lightsaber-like weapon called a laser rapier.

  • Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series contains, as an item/weapon, a 'Beam Sword', which also resembles a lightsaber. The 'Beam Sword' had a lightsaber like sound until it was changed to a unique sound for fear of legal action against Nintendo. In the original game, it was a fixed length and was activated indefinitely. In the sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee, its length depended on the character holding it and the power of the attack being used. The Melee Beam Sword also has a pinkish hue and an electrical sound effect.
  • In Halo 2, the player can wield an Energy Sword, plasma contained in an electromagnetic envelope, which was used only by Covenant Elites in Halo: Combat Evolved. Like a lightsaber, the Energy Sword is simply a metallic hilt until activated.
  • In the game Silent Hill 3, one of the bonus weapons that Heather can find is called a "Beam Saber", essentially a lightsaber with a yellow-green blade.
  • In the Guardian Legend, the main character (known only as the "Guardian of Earth") can obtain a lightsaber-style powerup (referred to as a "saber-laser") that can remain active as long as there are plenty of power chips available to feed it. Later on in the game, a double-bladed version of this same power-up (known as a "cutter-laser") is available.
  • In the MMORPG Phantasy Star Online, players can find and wield 'Photon Swords' that come in different colors, similar to lightsabers. They use green, blue, pink, red and yellow swords and players can find different varieties of such weapons in different sizes. Double-ended lightsabers are in the game as well. Just about every weapon in the game contains a lightsaber glow somewhere on it, usually at the blade area for melee weapons.
  • In Final Fantasy VI, the Atma Weapon is a blue glowing sword that grows in strength as the wielder grows in strength. In the Hindu epic Bhagavad-Gita, the word "atma" or "atman" refers to soul or one's spirit. A townsperson in the game mentions that the weapon changes depending on the spirit of its wielder. This has led a number of players to conjecture that the Atma Weapon is energy-based, like the lightsaber. In actuality, the name "Atma" is a quirk of the localization, which should actually be "Ultima." In later games, the proper Romanized spelling is used. With the exception of the Ultima Weapon appearing in Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls, the lightsaber-like appearance was dropped in favour of a blade made from what appears to be some kind of blue crystal.
  • In Ico, a lightsaber is hidden as a secret item and is the most powerful weapon available. This weapon is not available in the original United States release of the game.
  • In Xenosaga, the E.S. Simeon, a boss in the game uses an attack called "Beam Saber", which looks and sounds like a lightsaber, and "Beam Sabers" are available as AGWS weapons. Lightsaber-like weapons also appear as AMWS and E.S. weapons in Xenosaga Episode II
  • In Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, players can wield a double bladed laser sword, which is similar to Darth Maul's lightsaber. A Plasma Whip, similar to the lightwhip, is also available.
  • Certain video games in Namco's Tales series, including Tales of Symphonia, feature a weapon called the Laser Blade, "a sword made of light using ancient technology."
  • In StarCraft, the Protoss species is capable of focusing their psionic energies to create Psi blades with similar use and appearance as the lightsabers, though the Psi blades are usually mounted on the forearm rather than hand-held. Zeratul and the Dark Templar use beamed swords called Warp Blades.
  • In the Nintendo 64 game Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Kirby can get a double-bladed sword made of lightning (ala Darth Maul's lightsaber) that makes a sound similar to the sound lightsabers make. He can also use red blade of fire that can be extended and retracted.
  • In the PlayStation 2 game Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, three varieties of a weapon called "Light Sabre" may be obtained. The colors vary from green, blue, and red depending of the rarity of the weapon. The in-game description of the weapon reads "The force may be with you?". The "ultimate weapon" of the game, the Yoshitsuna, also highly resembles a Lightsaber, but the blade is yellow. In Phantom Brave, it is possible to obtain a weapon called the Divine Sword, almost identical in appearance to the Yoshitsuna. In the related title Makai Kingdom, "Beam Sabers" are a class of weapon independent of swords, with their own set of weapon techniques. They increase Atk, reduce Res, are anti-vehicle weapons, making them one of the best weapons in the postgame.
  • In Final Fantasy VIII, the main character Squall's ultimate weapon, the Lion Heart, resembles a cross between his signature gunblade and a Lightsaber.

  • In the computer game Diablo II, there is a unique weapon called the "Lightsaber", which is a more direct reference than most; however, it has the look of a regular metal sword, not an energy sword. When it is equipped, it increases the player's light radius, helping slightly in dark tunnels, making it a literal "light saber." Members of the Paladin class who use this weapon are sometimes jokingly referred to as "Jedi Knights."
  • In R-Type Final, the transforming humanoid ships, the TL-T2A Neoptolemos and the TL-T2B Hyllos, can wield a "Beam Saber Force" which can wield a deadly pair of energy beams over a wide area.

  • in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Space Marine Seargents can be upgraded to have Power Swords (see above) as close combat weapons.
  • In the Sega Genesis game Shining Force: legacy of great intention and its GBA remake, Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, a weapon called the "light saber" is obtained, along with a "dark saber" the former is a yellow blade, the latter is black with "dark energy" around it, the two are formed into a green energy-blade called the "chaosbreaker", all three bear a resembalance to lightsabers, the hilt being metal, the rest being energy, but they do not (or if they do it its never mentioned) "retract" like lightsabers.
