[edit] Film
- An outtake from the opening sequence was used in the "happy ending" version of Blade Runner, but removed from the director's cut. Warner Bros. were the distributors of both films. Coincidentally, actor Joe Turkel appears in both.
- In the movie Blast From the Past, when Adam goes up the elevator for the first time and leaves the bar, a poster for The Shining can be seen on the wall.
- In the movie Twister the tornado chasers are watching The Shining at a drive-in movie before a tornado destroys it.
- In Disney/Pixar film Toy Story are two references to The Shining:
- The carpet texture in the hallway of Sid's house is the same as the hallway carpet texture at the Overlook Hotel.
- In the scene in which the Mutant toys attack Sid (the "toy tormentor"), one of Sid's toys says "redrum".
- In another Disney/Pixar film, Finding Nemo the character of Bruce the shark parodies the "Here's Johnny!" scene by bursting through a hole in submarine and crying "Here's Brucie!".
- In the movie "Kung Fu Hustle", there is a parody of the blood gushing out a door.
- In the movie "Clerks II", during Elias's "Pillow Pants" monologue to Randall the background music is from the Shining, notably the part played during opening scene as Jack travels towards the Overlook through the mountains.
Also, in a deleted scene, Jay, after becoming clean from drugs, becomes irritated at Silent Bob's silence, noting that while he was still using, he imagined Silent Bob talking to him in his head "like the Shining"
- At the end of the Miramax version of The Thief and the Cobbler, Phido's quote "Here's Phido!" is similar to the Jack Nicholson quote "Here's Johnny!".
[edit] Television
[edit] The Simpsons
- In the episode Treehouse of Horror V, the segment entitled "The Shinning" (pronounced like shin) spoofs the film. Bart even tries to correct Willie, "You mean shining?!" to which Willie responds, "Shhh!! You wanna get sued?!", as using the same title of the film would be a copyright violation.
- In the episode Realty Bites, Marge begins work in real estate and believes she has caused the murder of the Flanders family by selling them a crime-scene house. After finding the family well, Ned mentions that the red paint Marge thought was blood is actually from his son's newly painted red room. Rod then replies to this: (wagging his finger) "Redroom...redroom..."
- In Brother from the Same Planet, Bart tries to contact Homer by sheer force of mental will, he says, "Pick up Bart". Cut to Milhouse with his finger wagging, "trab pu kcip". The mirror shows "Pick up Bart".
- In the episode The Last Temptation of Homer, Bart's blackboard punishment at the beginning of the show is similar to the book Jack is writing.
- In the episode The Springfield Files, a chapter title shows the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".
- In the episode Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner?, Homer types the same thing over and over just like Jack did.
- In the episode Homer the Smithers, Smithers senses that there is something wrong with Mr Burns while he is on away from the nuclear plant, similar to how Hallorann sensed there was something wrong with Danny.
[edit] Other TV
- Claire on Six Feet Under brings it up frequently. In one episode, she is telling her boyfriend about a time when blood started coming out of the hose and she said it was like it was "straight out of The Shining." In another episode, she is taking pictures of a pool of blood in the basement and her brother gets mad at her. She says "Come on! This is like straight out of The Shining!"
- In an episode of the cartoon Rocko's Modern Life, Heffer takes a job as a night watchman at the corporate headquarters of Conglom-O and runs into many situations parallel to the movie's story, including a ghostly bartender named Lloyd.
- In the second episode of Twin Peaks, Jerry Horne almost directly quotes Johnny's famous writing when speaking to his brother, Benjamin Horne; "All work and no play make Ben & Jerry dull boys".
- In X-Men: The Animated Series, the episode "The Dark Phoenix - Part II The Inner Circle", after Wolverine smashed through the door for an ambush attack, he uttered the movie's most famous line: "Here's Johnny!".
- In an episode of the TV comedy Malcolm in the Middle entitled "Therapy", Reese (Justin Berfield) decides to fake a condition so he can see the child psychologist to get time off school. His chosen approach is to wag his index finger while saying "Reese isn't here right now."
- In the Family Guy episode Peter, Peter, Caviar Eater, Stewie meets the infamous twin girls. He then proceeds to blow them up with a missile launcher after saying "All work and no play makes Stewie a dull boy". At the start of another episode, while also parodying The Naked Gun Stewie cycles through the hotel and runs the twins over with his tricycle. In another episode, Love thy trophy, Stewie spells the word REDRUM with his blocks.
- In the The Fairly OddParents episode "Homewrecker", when Vicky crashes her head through the door with her axe, she says the line similar to that of the famous Jack Nicholson line, "Here's Johnny!".
- In the Drawn Together episode "Ghostesses in the Slot Machine", while Captain Hero and Xandir are redecorating Spanky's living space the bathroom begins to fill with blood. This had come pouring from the taps, parodying the pouring of blood from the elevators.
- In the South Park episode Go God Go, Eric Cartman attempts to freeze himself for three weeks while waiting for the Nintendo Wii. Just before being frozen he mutters, "I'm coming, Nintendo...", a parody of Jack's final words in the movie. Also, the episode The New Terrance and Phillip Movie Trailer makes a reference to the blood coming out the elevator doors.
- Also in South Park, Chef has a picture above his bed very similar to the one Dick Halloran has above his bed.
- In an episode of The Young Ones, the boys' landlord, Jerzei Balowski drinks a potion concocted by Vyvyan (the potion being a cure for NOT being an axe-wielding homicidal maniac). He then chases them into a bedroom, hacks through the door and screams "HERE'S JERZEI!"
- A commercial for Moviefone.com shows a child and his mother in a room similar to the Torrance apartment, with the child repeatedly muttering, "Moc tod enof eivom," a la the redrum scene. His panicking mother picks him up, worried about what he is saying, only to look in the mirror and see that his words are actually "Moviefone dot com" in reverse.
- In an episode of the animated television series Johnny Bravo, Johnny is given an Rorschach test. Upon seeing one of the images, he says that it is a picture of "Tony, the little boy who lives in my mouth". Interestingly, later on in the episode, the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (Another Stanley Kubrick film) is parodied.
- In episode XIII of Samurai Jack, Aku is telling some children modified fairy tales, portraying Samurai Jack as evil. In the variant of Three Little Pigs, Jack starts breaking down their door, and then sticks his face inside and shouts, "Here's Jackie!"
- In The League of Gentlemen, Harvey Denton has evil twin daughters that seem to appear from nowhere, unsettling the Dentons' guest.
In an episode of Friends, Joey is reading the shining and is terrified to the point of putting the book in a freezer.
The film clip for "The kill(bury me)" by 30 seconds to mars is similar to the movie, the shining
In an episode of Supernatural, Dean hacks through a door to rescure Sam, similar to a scene from The Shining
In an episode of the King Of Queens, Doug is trying to get back at his friends by scaring their kids, so they will stay up all night. A scene shows the two kids gather around Doug while he's reading The Shining. He reads "...AND HE SAW THAT IT SPELLED MURDER!" Then he says that Danny screamed, Doug yells and the kids jump.
[edit] Print
- Despite King's apparent dislike of the movie, the character of Eddie Dean alludes to it now and again in the second Dark Tower book: The Drawing of the Three. Jack Nicholson's famous door-smashing scene is also mentioned in the King book The Tommyknockers.
- In Michael Gerber's Harry Potter parody "Barry Trotter and the Unnecessary Sequel", the character Lon once, instead of typing Barry's memoirs, types "All work and no play makes Lon a dull boy" in various repetitions and permutations of the layout of that very sentence.
[edit] Music
- The famous line spoken by Jack Nicholson, "I'm not gonna hurt you...I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash them right the fuck in!" Is sampled for the opening of the song "Carnivores" by the Death Rap supergroup Circle of Tyrants.
- Nicholson's line "a momentary loss of muscular coordination" used to describe his assault on Danny, is sampled by the band Squeeze in the 12" version of their song "Last Time Forever". The song is about an old man's remorse over killing the love of his life years earlier in a fit of jealousy.
- Zao's song "Lies of Serpent, River of Tears" fades out with a mixture of feedback and a sample of Danny's tricycle rumbling on the hardwood floor of the hotel.
- The Chimaira song "Pictures From the Gold Room" is in reference to the titular room in the Overlook Hotel.
- Slipknot's music video for Spit It Out is based on The Shining.
- 30 Seconds to Mars' music video for "The Kill" is based on The Shining.
- In the beginning of Gorillaz' music video for "Rock The House", Noodle is seen riding a tricycle through the hallways of Kong Studios, passing a pair of sinister (albeit male) twins on the way.
- The Fear Before the March of Flames' song 237 is about The Shining.
- Grunge band Alice in Chains features the lyrics "I'm a dull boy, work all day" in their song Angry Chair. This is a reference to when Jack was typing "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."
- Alkaline Trio's song Donner Party is about The Shining.
- A Christian Band, Casting Crowns, begins the song "American Dream" with the line, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

[edit] Miscellaneous
- A parody trailer by Robert Ryang, using footage from the film and in which The Shining was marketed as a family based character film, swiftly became a much downloaded internet favourite on its wide distribution in October 2005. (Source: New York Times)
- The Shining was voted Number One in Channel Four's The 100 Greatest Scary Moments.
- During late 2006, A poster released to promote the second season of the anime Black Lagoon parodied the "Come play with us" scene.
- In the computer game Max Payne 2 on the Mona's Funhouse, based on a fictional TV series in the game, there's a bathroom with "REDDRUM" (yes, with double 'D') written on the wall.
- In the game Tony Hawk's Project 8, in the High School level, the classic goals start with a scene featuring the twins.
- The poster for WWE's PPV Backlash 2007 is based on the picture of Jack leering through the broken doorframe, featuring the wrestler Edge.
- A Garry's Mod version/parody of the Shining was done with members of PHWOnline, although the parody ends differently than all three versions of the Shining.
- The video game "The Suffering: Ties That Bind" makes 2 distinct references to the movie; one being that in the hedgemaze (reference enough) you can find a skeletal body with an axe beside it (reference to Jack's death). Also, if you pay attention to the way Torque swings the axe and compare it to the way Jack does, you may notice they swing very similar; the "downward chop" is most distinct, as Jack uses that on the doorframe.
