The number here corresponds to the image on the right that has numbers superimposed on a county map of Iowa. The numbers used are not significant in any way other than for identification (any similarities to other meanings are coincidental).
The counties and state assign a number to each county based on its spot in the alphabetical list, but this is not the numbering system used here.
The FIPS state code for Iowa is "19", its State Abbreviation is "IA".
The link shown under FIPS county code is to the U.S. Census Bureau State and County Quick facts page for that county.
- ^ The FIPS county code is the five-digit Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) code which uniquely identifies counties and county equivalents in the United States. The three-digit number is unique to each individual county within a state, but to be unique within the entire United States, it must be prefixed by the state code. This means that, for example, while Adair County, Iowa is number 001, Allen County, Kansas and Ada County, Idaho also have the number 001. There are also Adair County, Missouri and Adair County, Oklahoma which also have the number 001. Chickasaw County, Iowa has the number 037, while Chickasaw County, Mississippi has the number 017. To uniquely identify Adair County, Iowa, you would need to use the state code of 19 plus the county code of 001. Thus the unique identifier for the entire United States for Adair County, Iowa would be 19001, and for Chickasaw County, Iowa would be 19037, etc.
