List of counties in Colorado
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On November 1, 1861, the Territory of Colorado created 17 counties. A number of them have been split over the years. The following is a list of the 64 counties in the U.S. state of Colorado. The links in the column FIPS County Code are to the Census Bureau Info page for that county.
The FIPS county code is the five-digit Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) code which uniquely identifies counties and county equivalents in the United States. The three-digit number is unique to each individual county within a state, but to be unique within the entire United States, it must be prefixed by the state code. This means that, for example, while Adams County, Colorado is number 001, there is also an Adams County, North Dakota that is also 001, and a Baker County, Oregon that is also 001; there also is an Adams County, Idaho that is number 003. While El Paso County, Colorado is number 039, Brazoria County, Texas and Dallas County, Arkansas also have the number 039. There also is an El Paso County, Texas with the number 141. To uniquely identify El Paso County, Colorado, you would need to use the state code of 08 plus the county code of 039. Thus the unique identifier for the entire United States for Adams County, Colorado would be 08001, and El Paso County, Colorado would be 08039 etc.
