List of comunas in Chile

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list is complete and up-to-date as of January, 2007.

This is a list of all the official comunas in Chile grouped according to the regions in which they are located.

A comuna is a third level administrative division of the country. The country is first divided into Regions which are next divided into Provinces. Each province is then divided into comunas which are administered by a municipality with a locally elected mayor and councillors.

Note that a comuna is not exactly the same as a municipality but is commonly used interchangeably. The comuna is the administrative division, while the municipality is the legal entity which is responsible for carrying out the administration. The name of the municipality may differ from the name of the comuna and a particular municipality may, according to the constitution of Chile, administer more than one comuna.
