This is a list of video game hoaxes that are created usually created by gamers or in the media, often as an April Fool's joke.
[edit] The truck in Pokémon Red and Blue
The truck - A truck was discovered to the right of where the S.S. Anne which was believed to hide Mew in Pokémon Red and Blue. Many cheats have been posted on the internet, but the truck has not proved to be of any importance.[1]
[edit] Playable Luigi in Super Mario 64
Luigi was believed to be a secret playable character in Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, based on an inscription in a statue that many believed to read "L is Real 2041". People often claimed they discovered how to unlock Luigi and provided an extensive chain-of-events that often was difficult to complete. Additionally, a photoshop of Mario was made to look more like Luigi as evidence of him being in the game.[2]

[edit] Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee
In 2002, the staff of Electronic Gaming Monthly posted in an issue of their magazine that both Sonic and Tails can be unlocked in Super Smash Bros. Melee by defeating 20 Fighting Wire-Frames in the Cruel Melee mode. Afterwards, the player would have to battle both of them in order to be able to play as them. They also provided photoshopped screenshots of them in battle and the message the player sees when they are unlocked. However, once people began accomplishing it, Electronic Gaming Monthly revealed that it was a hoax.[6]
