- J Hepworth & Son - formerly a tailor it was renamed Next in the 1980s and is now based in Enderby, Leicestershire
- Leeds Permanent Building Society - also known as The Leeds it was bought by the Halifax in 1995 which in turn merged with Bank of Scotland. However there continues to be a significant HBOS office presence in the city of Leeds
- Marks & Spencer - founded in Leeds Kirkgate Market as a penny bazarr it has long since been headquartered in London.
- Planet Online - laterly known as Energis Squared, business ISP bought by Energis and now part of Cable & Wireless.
- Schofields - a department store on The Headrow in Leeds which was bought by House of Fraser in 1988 and latterly closed in 1996.
- Thurstons - a bakers and sandwich retailer which had been taken over by Greggs in the 1990s and subsequently rebranded as Greggs.
- Waddingtons - a maker of board games which was taken over by the American toy company Hasbro and had since had production of board games moved out of the city.
