List of cities in Karafuto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of cities in Karafuto by their Japanese names. Karafuto is the Japanese name for Sakhalin, which at various times has been part of both Russia and Japan. During periods of Japanese rule, the parts controlled by Japan were known as the Karafuto-chō. Since 1947, the whole island is part of the Russian Sakhalin Oblast. Because Japan and Russia have yet to formally sign a peace treaty for the end of World War II, the status of the southern half of Sakhalin Island is an object of dispute, though Japan formally renounced its claims in the Treaty of San Francisco.
