List of characters in the Banjo-Kazooie series
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of characters from the Banjo-Kazooie series of video games.
[edit] Introduced in Banjo-Kazooie
[edit] Banjo
Banjo is a laid-back bear who lives at the base of Spiral Mountain. He sets out on his first adventure when his sister, Tooty, is kidnapped.
[edit] Kazooie
Kazooie is a Red-Crested Breegull and Banjo's friend. She is, according to Banjo-Tooie's manual, "ill mannered, foul-mouthed, and proud of it!"
[edit] Tooty
Tooty is Banjo's younger sister. She is sweet and kind and loves going on adventures with her brother. Tooty has blonde hair tied in pigtails, wears a red shirt with a yellow star in the middle and purple trousers. She plays the piccolo in the introduction of the first game with Banjo and Kazooie playing a banjo and kazoo, respectively (along with Mumbo on the saxophone, xylophone, and fiddle). Tooty was kidnapped by the envious Gruntilda, who tried to steal her beauty. She is friends with Bottles (who she calls "Mr. Mole"). Tooty was rescued by Banjo as first prize in Grunty's Furnace Fun.
After Banjo-Kazooie, Tooty has not appeared in a game since. The only reference to Tooty seems to be a picture of her in Banjo's house and on a giant milk carton in Banjo-Tooie, in a traditional lost person ad.
While Banjo-Kazooie was still in pre-production, the official Nintendo magazine, Nintendo Power, gave an overview of the game in which Tooty's original name was "Piccolo" and she was Banjo's girlfriend, not his sister. Tooty still plays a piccolo in the intro of the first game.
[edit] Mumbo Jumbo
Mumbo Jumbo is a powerful shaman who can transform Banjo and Kazooie into various forms in Banjo-Kazooie. He is available as a playable character in Banjo-Tooie when Humba Wumba replaces Mumbo as the character that transforms them into creatures.
[edit] Bottles
Bottles, a mild-mannered mole, is Tooty's friend, and teaches Banjo and Kazooie their moves. He dislikes Kazooie, and the two often get into arguments. In Banjo-Tooie, he is killed at the beginning while playing a card game with Banjo, Mumbo, and Kazooie. Bottles refused to believe that Grunty was brought back to life after Mumbo saw Grunty's sisters revive her. When Gruntilda is resurrected, she destroys Banjo's house, along with Bottles who comes out black and burned, and he eventually falls on his back while his spirit leaves his body. By reversing the B.O.B.'s sucking effect, Kazooie revived King Jingaling and Bottles.
[edit] Gruntilda Winkybunion
An evil witch, Gruntilda kidnaps Tooty in Banjo-Kazooie and tries to steal her beauty after her cauldron, Dingpot, says Tooty is the prettiest in Spiral Mountain, commenting Tooty is nice, pretty, and kind. Only to be thwarted by Banjo and Kazooie, she falls from her tower covered by a huge rock after she falls to the ground and stays buried for two years until Banjo-Tooie. Her sisters rescue her in Banjo-Tooie, and she tries to create a new body by sucking life force from Bottles and King Jingaling to create a new body for her deteriorating one. After winning the Tower of Tragedy Quiz, she goes to the top of her tower at Cauldron Keep to fight Banjo and Kazooie. Grunty is thwarted by Banjo and Kazooie again and her "Hag 1" machine blew up. After beating Grunty, a cutscene is shown showing Banjo, Kazooie, Mumbo, Humba Wumba, and Jamjars kicking Grunty's head around. After Jamjars passes her head to Banjo and Kazooie, they kick her head high up in the air to see her eye come out, saying she'll be back in Banjo Threeie. She has been announced as a returning character for Banjo-Kazooie 3.
[edit] Klungo
Klungo is Gruntilda's assistant, who operates the machinery in her laboratory. He comes back in Banjo-Tooie as the first boss known as Klungo 1,Klungo 2 by breaking the boulder by Pine Grove, and Klungo 3 at Cauldron Keep. After Klungo 3,he quits, and decides to make games.
[edit] Jinjos
Jinjos are a race of birdlike characters that help Banjo and Kazooie on their various adventures. In Banjo-Kazooie, each world had five Jinjos hidden and, after finding all five, the player would be awarded with a Jiggy. In Banjo-Tooie, there were Jinjo families with unique colors for each and, instead of finding five Jinjos in each world, finding a full family scattered through all the worlds would unlock a Jiggy.
[edit] Gruntilda's Lair
[edit] Brentilda Winkybunion
Brentilda Winkybunion, more commonly referred to as Brentilda, is a character in the Banjo-Kazooie series. She's Gruntilda's nicer sister.
Brentilda is the complete opposite of Gruntilda. She looks more like a kind fairy than a mean witch. She has green skin, like Gruntilda, but unlike Gruntilda she wears a pink dress. When Banjo and Kazooie approach her in the game, the music changes to a joyful tune. She helps the duo by giving them information about Gruntilda's habits that they'll need for the quiz at the end of the game. She will also restore their energy. In Mad Monster Mansion in the Banjo-Kazooie game, you can see a portrait of Brentilda on the wall of the room where the green ghost is sleeping. The same portrait can be seen in Banjo-Tooie, laying in the corner of Pawno's Emporium in Jolly Roger's Lagoon. Brentilda may be based off of Glinda the Good of The Wizard of Oz, while Gruntilda takes her design from the Wicked Witch of the West.
[edit] Cheato
Cheato is a flying book filled with cheat codes that Banjo and Kazooie can use to help them on their adventures. In Banjo-Kazooie Cheato offers to give Banjo and Kazooie a cheat code each time they find him in a new location in Gruntilda's Lair. Whenever he offers this, Gruntilda threatens to rip Cheato's pages out, but Cheato disobeys her anyways. When Banjo and Kazooie meet Cheato again in Banjo-Tooie, most of his pages have been ripped out by Gruntilda, who spread them throughout the Isle O' Hags. Cheato offers to give the two a cheat code for every five pages they find and return to him. Cheato also makes an appearance in Banjo-Pilot where players can once again get cheat codes from him.
A continuity error exists with him in the series. In the Banjo-Kazooie instruction manual, it states that Gruntilda dropped her spell books on the way out of the lair. In Banjo-Tooie, it is revealed that it was the same one each time.
[edit] Dingpot
Dingpot is a large cauldron, from whom Grunty learns that Tooty is more beautiful. Dingpot becomes disenchanted with Grunty, and he helps Banjo and Kazooie get to the roof to confront her.
[edit] Mumbo's Mountain
[edit] Chimpy
Chimpy is a chimpanzee who likes Conga's oranges, but is afraid of being near Conga.
[edit] Conga
A gorilla who loves oranges, Conga does not give up his tree without a fight. In Banjo-Tooie, he is the big top ringleader in Witchy World.
[edit] Treasure Trove Cove
[edit] Captain Blubber
Captain Blubber apparently owns the beached ship, The Salty Hippo. His treasure is lost in the hold of the ship. After Banjo helped him to retrieve it, Blubber went off on a business venture. He set up a "Waveracer" shop in Jolly Roger's Lagoon, but by Banjo-Tooie, his business was ruined, along with several Waveracers. Blubber went on to participate in a trivia contest, and used the winnings to purchase a "flying craft" (oddly enough, the Saucer of Peril ride from Witchyworld).
[edit] Snacker
Snacker is a shark who chases Banjo and Kazooie whenever they end up in deep water. He also appears much later in the game at Rusty Bucket Bay, where he once again terrorizes Banjo and Kazooie.
[edit] Nipper
Nipper is a giant crab claiming to own the beach, proclaiming that the duo will get nowhere without him. He turns hostile after Kazooie makes a rude remark towards him.
[edit] Clanker's Cavern
[edit] Clanker
A giant machine resembling an enormous whale (as it is said in the game although he looks more like a giant shark), Clanker serves as Gruntilda's garbage disposal. He dislikes the dirty water, and offers Banjo and Kazooie rewards if they will get him some fresh air and cure his toothache.
[edit] Bubblegloop Swamp
[edit] Mr. Vile
Mr. Vile is a crocodile who lives in the swamp. He challenges Banjo (in the form of a crocodile) to an eating contest. Mr. Vile prides himself as being the meanest crocodile around.
[edit] Tanktup
Tanktup is a giant turtle who complains that his flippers are too cold.
[edit] Tiptup
Tiptup is the conductor of the choir inside Tanktup. Tiptup reappears two years later in Jolly Roger's Lagoon with an egg, long overdue to hatch. He also appeared alongside Banjo in Diddy Kong Racing.
[edit] The Tiptup Choir
A group of turtles performs a symphony inside Tanktup, and challenge Banjo to play along.
[edit] Freezeezy Peak
[edit] Boggy
Boggy is a polar bear who falls down after swallowing a Jiggy. He likes to challenge people to sledding competitions. Boggy seems to have lost all of the presents for his three children across the peak. Boggy makes another appearance in the sequel at Hailfire Peaks. Boggy has gained weight and given up sledding. He spends his time watching TV all day.
[edit] Wozza
A walrus who lives inside a cave, Wozza does not take kindly to outsiders (except for other walruses). Inside his cave, one can see the inaccessible Ice Key.
[edit] Gobi's Valley
[edit] Gobi
When Banjo and Kazooie first find Gobi, the camel is tied down, complaining about the heat. When he is freed, Gobi runs off and rests next to Trunker, but refuses to share his water with the tree, until Banjo forces him to. Later, when Banjo forces Gobi to cough up a hollow honeycomb, Gobi angrily announces his departure from the valley. Gobi later turns up under a large flower in Click Clock Wood, where Banjo forces him to give up his water more times. Finally, he is fed up, and decides to leave for a "lava world", introduced in Banjo-Tooie as Hailfire Peaks. However, on the way, Grunty captures him and uses him as an attraction in her theme park, Witchyworld. Banjo and Kazooie free him and he continues to the lava world, where he is used to cool the insides of Chuffy the Train so Chuffy can access the icy side. Also, in the sequel, Gobi is seen wearing a beard and is thus dubbed the "Ancient Bearded Camel". If the player goes to see him first as Banjo alone, Gobi reveals that the beard was put on him to make him more popular... but it's not working.
[edit] Jinxy
Jinxy is a recurring element in Gobi's Valley. Aside from the main sphinx-like statue, there are several smaller ones throughout the level, which usually eat eggs. When Jinxy is first encountered, he is very congested.
[edit] King Sandybutt
King Sandybutt was apparently an ancient king around the valley. Inside his tomb is a maze, where trespassers are intended to be trapped if they seek his treasure.
[edit] Trunker
Trunker the tree is very thirsty, but he can not get any water. Banjo later helps him when he forces Gobi to share his water.
[edit] Rubee
Rubee is the snake charmer inside Kazooie's pyramid. Putting five eggs on the moving basket will make the snake, Histup, rise. This will give Banjo access to a Jiggy.
[edit] Mad Monster Mansion
[edit] Loggo
Loggo is a toilet in an upstairs room of the mansion. While in the form of a pumpkin, Loggo allows Banjo to travel down inside him. In Banjo Tooie, as punishment for helping Banjo and Kazooie, Gruntilda moves Loggo to Grunty Industries, where he's used as the men's room toilet.
[edit] Motzand
Motzand is a giant ghostly hand who plays the organ in the church near the mansion. He asks Banjo to follow his notes on the keys. Motzand is a reference to the composer Mozart.
[edit] Napper
Napper, a large green ghost, inhabits the giant dining room of the mansion, guarding a Jiggy. He, like Grunty, often talks in rhyme, and he also seems to know Grunty rather well.
[edit] Rusty Bucket Bay
[edit] Snorkel
Snorkel is a dolphin who is trapped under the anchor of the Rusty Bucket.
[edit] Click Clock Wood
[edit] Eyrie
An eagle who is hatched in spring, Eyrie gets fed caterpillars by Banjo, and becomes fully-grown in winter.
[edit] Gnawty
Gnawty the beaver's home is blocked by a large boulder, but he gets in during the summer. He apparently does not prepare for visitors in winter. Gnawty bears a large resemblance to the beaver enemies from the Donkey Kong Country series, also developed by Rare.
[edit] Nabnut
Nabnut is a squirrel who enjoys eating acorns. He squanders his stores, and by autumn is left searching for more. In winter, he sleeps next to another, unnamed squirrel.
[edit] Introduced in Banjo-Tooie
[edit] Sergeant Jamjars
Sergeant Jamjars is the brother of the short-sighted mole, Bottles. In the game Banjo-Tooie, he teaches the player the moves and skills required to reach Gruntilda in Cauldron Keep, calling the moves Bottles had taught Banjo in the last game 'novice moves'. JamJars is a stereotypical drill sergeant complete with trooper sunglasses and green fatigues and army boots. He speaks loudly and clearly. He is different from Bottles like cheese to chalk, as the booklet says. He also gets into many witty quarels with Kazooie. His silos create a network of shortcuts throughout the overworld.
[edit] Bottles' Family
Bottles' home is in Jinjo Village, where he lives with his wife and children. When Banjo and Kazooie arrive, Banjo can not bring himself to tell them about Bottles' demise (although Kazooie does not seem so reserved).
[edit] Mrs. Bottles
Mrs. Bottles is Bottles' wife. She dresses in an apron with slippers, and has rollers in her hair.
[edit] Speccy and Goggles
Speccy and Goggles are the son and daughter, respectively, of Bottles and Mrs. Bottles. Speccy appears older, and is proud of his father, boasting that he can beat the Jinjos in the Jinjo vs. Mole kickball tournament. Speccy plays with a toy fighter plane. Goggles gives Banjo and Kazooie the Amaze-O-Gaze glasses invented by Bottles. She can be seen playing with a Donkey Kong doll. Both children have Jet Force Gemini posters in their rooms.
[edit] Humba Wumba
Humba Wumba is a shaman who seems to have a rivalry with fellow shaman Mumbo Jumbo. It could be because the two are competing as powerful shamans. Humba took over Mumbo's role from the first game, granting the player transformations.
Wumba's only reference to Mumbo Jumbo are threats when the player (controlling Mumbo) enters her wigwam. Mumbo makes references of his own when the player completes the game. Mumbo at one point tells her to shut up or he threatens to summon the golden giant (a magic trick he can perform in the game).
It is possible that the two met sometime during their training as Mumbo claimed in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge that he was still a shaman-in-training. It could be that he has a higher "rank" in shaman magic than Wumba, since Wumba can only change Banjo and Kazooie into animals and objects, and she requires a Glowbo to do so. Mumbo only needs the power of Glowbos to do other tasks that considerably uses a lot more magic than his simple transformations.
In the final sequence of Banjo-Tooie, it seems apparent that Mumbo and Wumba inevitably bury the hatchet and declare a truce.
[edit] King Jingaling
King Jingaling is ruler of the peaceful Jinjo Village, where his golden temple is located. He carries with him a mysterious pink pet named Toots, who appears exactly like Rubee's pet companion from Gobi's Valley and could easily have just come into the kings possession. After the player has beaten Klungo and visited Jingaling, the king becomes one of Gruntilda's victims as she tries to suck up the life forces of characters in the Isle O' Hags to create a new body for herself, turning the King into a zombie (Toots is burned into the throne so deeply, only his eyes are visible). At the end of the game, he is rescued by Banjo and Kazooie when they infiltrate Gruntilda's hideout, Cauldron Keep. They use the B.O.B (Big-O'-Blaster) to revive everyone Grunty had sucked all the life away from, including Jingaling and Bottles. King Jingaling seems to act young seeing as he says "yo" often. He is one of the few characters Kazooie does not seem to insult - she even thinks his "strange pet thingy" is "cool".
[edit] Master Jiggywiggy
Master Jiggywiggy is the keeper and leader of the golden tokens called "Jiggies" and the mystical Crystal Jiggy. He is a fairly important character, as he is the one to open up the levels in which you must venture in, although you technically have to solve the jigsaw puzzle first in order for him to do so. He wears a bright yellow tunic and a bright blue cloak with Jiggy images on it held up by a honeycomb-shaped brooch, and his head resembles a Jiggy. Jiggywiggy appears again, in his younger form, in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge. He can be considered a high priest in apperanace and his role.
[edit] Honey B.
Honey B. is a giant, beautiful queen bee (dwarfing Banjo in size) who lives in a large beehive on the Plateau on the Isle o' Hags. She offers extra energy in exchange for hollow honeycombs.
[edit] Mingella and Blobbelda Winkybunion
Mingella and Blobbelda are the sisters of Gruntilda. The two built B.O.B (Big O Blaster) and Hag 1 (Digger), and currently reside under a couple of 1-ton weights in Cauldron Keep, the witches' hideout, where they were ironically flattened by Grunty herself during another one of her infamous end-of-game quizzes.
Mingella is bone-thin, tall, and has an abnormally long nose and pink hair. She carries a spell book around with her and can be described as a stereotypical witch. Like Gruntilda, she and Blobbelda have an unusual colloquial habit: in their case, they employ anastrophe, reverting the proper order of sentences similar to Yoda (e.g. they angrily say "Annoying your rhyming is" instead of "Your rhyming is annoying" when Gruntilda asks them in rhyme how the sisters plan to "get her body back").
Blobbelda can be described as "shapely" as Grunty puts it during the Tower of Tragedy Quiz, she is also short, carries a blue cat under her arm (which is not named) and has red-orange hair. She is a stereotypical witch, with green skin and warts, but unlike her sisters, doesn't wear a hat. Her voice sound is low and rumbly as compared to Mingella's which is scratchier (like Grunty's only a much higher pitch).
[edit] Lord Woo Fak Fak
Lord Woo Fak Fak is a fictional character in the Nintendo 64 Rare game "Banjo Tooie," sequel to "Banjo Kazooie." He is the level boss of Jolly Roger's lagoon, and resides at the bottom of the level's ocean in a broken locker labeled "D. Jones," a humorous reference to the seafarer's legend of Davy Jones' Locker. Fak Fak is, by the game's titling, a "self-important anglerfish," though he is much larger than an actual anglerfish (approximately 75 feet long, compared to the less than three foot real-life anglerfish). He, unlike other bosses, can also be fought while Banjo and Kazooie are transformed. Lord Woo Fak Fak mentions (after you have defeated him)that he used to be a hero. What this means is not known. King Jingaling mentions that himself and Woo Fak Fak often go fishing together. Again, what this means is not known. Also, if attacked after defeated, will say he knows Banjo's father.
[edit] Mayahem Temple
[edit] Dilberta
Dilberta is a rat who, in her search for gold, is captured in the prison complex at Mayahem Temple.
[edit] Targitzan
Targitzan, Despotic Dizzy Totem God is the boss of Mayahem Temple. He resembles a totem pole, and shoots darts from his many mouths. Banjo fought him in his secret chamber, using Kazooie as a gun.
[edit] Glitter Gulch Mine
[edit] Bullion Bill
Bullion Bill is a prospector in Glitter Gulch Mine. He is good friends with Dilberta, and is heartbroken when she gets lost searching for gold. As a reward for helping her back to his home, Bill gives Banjo a Jiggy. Later, a group of TNT sticks known as Bangsticks threaten to blow up his mine, so he asks Banjo and Kazooie to defuse them.
[edit] Canary Mary
Canary Mary was a canary who was once used in the mine to warn miners of dangerous gases. Eventually, she was locked in a cage inside a gaseous chamber, until Banjo and Kazooie freed her. Afterwards, Mary raced them, with Banjo controlling a mousecar. The second race in the game is one of the most difficult minigames in Banjo-Tooie.
[edit] Old King Coal
Old King Coal, Grubby Boiler Monarch inhabits the firebox of a locomotive called Chuffy. He fights Banjo and Kazooie, who want to take control of the engine. After you defeat him, Old King Coal believes you are worthy of riding his train and, he gladly drives Chuffy over to any train station you call him to.
[edit] Witchy World
[edit] Al
Big Al, or just Al operates the burger stand in Witchy World. He does not know exactly how he got the job, but he says he used to clean the toilets. He has a bad green cough and a tendency to "accidentally" use it on his burgers.
[edit] Mrs. Boggy
Mrs. Boggy is the wife of Boggy. During her stay at Witchy World, her children all ran off in different places, and she was unable to find them.
[edit] Joe
Joe is the misanthropic fry vendor. Joe is a bit rude, and he hates customers because they always want things. If you visit him as lone Banjo, Joe asks if he can be your sidekick (probably because he thought that Banjo didn't need Kazooie any more when she is not seen with you). He has a constant cold.
[edit] Mr. Patch
Mr. Patch, Strange Wobbly Inflatable Thing is the boss of Witchyworld, a large green inflatable dinosaur-esque creature. When Conga lets Banjo and Kazooie into the tent, they search for their seats when Mr. Patch appears. After Kazooie comments on his size ("That Klungo guy near the start was probably bigger than you."), he puffs himself up to an incredible height, almost reaching the ceiling, and the fight begins. Once the duo shoots out the first of his many multicolored patches (his "weak point"), he sends punching gloves to come up from the ground to attack, forcing the duo to shoot him down from the air.
[edit] Jolly Roger's Lagoon
[edit] Captain Blackeye
Captain Blackeye is a curious character who sits in the back room at Jolly's. He appears to be a pirate, and he drinks perpetually. Blackeye rants about how a bear who, he believes, looked like Banjo stole his glory. He appears to be the same individual seen in pictures in Mad Monster Mansion, albeit a bit more haggard. He is also rumored to be linked to the mysterious Stop N Swop. One of his infamous remarks is "I once had a Dream...." The project name for Banjo Kazooie was in fact Dream, so this causes many to believe that before Rare thought of making Banjo and Kazooie into a game, they would have a pirate game staring Captain Blackeye.
[edit] Chris
Chris P. Bacon is a photographer who was found taking pictures of ancient paintings inside a temple in Atlantis, but he gets harassed by sinister fish who bite him despite the fact that he is in a cage. Banjo and Kazooie must shoot eggs at the fish until Chris is done taking pictures. Apparently, he uses a Gameboy and Gameboy Camera in his job as he is seen holding them in his hand when you meet him. His name comes from the pun "Crispy Bacon".
[edit] Jolly
Jolly Roger the frog is the flamboyant bartender at "Jolly's", the pub at the lagoon. When Banjo and Kazooie meet him, he is depressed because his friend and partner is lost somewhere in the lagoon. He allows the two to rent the tavern's only room, although he warns that a mole has dug a hole through the floor. It's confirmed he will appear in Banjo Kazooie 3, which is scheduled to release on the Xbox 360.
[edit] Introduced in Grunty's Revenge
[edit] Bozzeye
Bozzeye' is an ancestor of Bottles and his family. He teaches moves in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge in place of Bottles and Jamjars when Banjo travels back in time. Kazooie points out that he seems to have two lazy eyes.
