[edit] Imran's family

Ali Imran’s character is a complex and versatile one. He is a bright and young Oxford graduate holding both M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees. In his most deceiving personality, he seems to have a moronic quality. The closest parallel that can be found in western literature would be the character of the detective Columbo. However, Columbo and Imran belong to two different spheres altogether.

Imran is very agile and energetic. When it comes to fighting an enemy face to face, we always find him winning the battle. Imran is a man with a great character, and has extraordinary sex appeal. He has a nice muscular body and looks stunning. But he always puts on a front of appearing stupid and moronic. Thus, his features make him look distinguished, but he uses his expressions to camouflage himself as one of the stupidest men on earth. He never reveals his true side to anyone, as he knows that it will not be good for his career, which is far dearer to him than his life. Thus, he is always shown acting stupid, insane, and funny, keeping the readers in hysterics at his every action. Even his father, Mr. Rahman, becomes so sick and tired of his jests that he orders Imran to leave the house. In his opinion, Imran is a very stupid person who is of no use; and so he doesn’t want to associate with him. However, Imran manages to open his father’s eyes on several occasions, garnering praise for his efforts and bravery. Imran’s mother (whom Imran call “Amma Bi”) loves her son, though she often beats Imran with her sandals. Imran also has a sister named Suraiya, who is also sick and tired of Imran, who, like a typical older brother, is always messing around with her.

Imran dresses eccentrically; for example, he might wear a pink coat, with a light green shirt, a yellow necktie, white pants, and a purple flat hat with a red rose in it. Ibne Safi refers to this as Imran’s “Technicolor Outfit.” This doesn’t mean that Imran is always dressed like this. When required, he wears expensive suits, and looks stunning as a result.

Most of the time, Imran drives a two-seater sports car, which he parks in a garage near his three-bedroom apartment, where he normally resides. He also has a Buick parked at “Rana Palace.”

Imran is a colorful character with four personalities in one. As Ali Imran, he acts as an opportunist who can become either a police informer or a blackmailer as the situation demands. This cover is obviously for the police department and the villains, who do not have a clue as to how important a position he holds.

Imran’s most clandestine personality is that of X-2, Chief of the Secret Services. Only three other characters know this secret. One of them is Sir Sultan, Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Imran reports directly to him or to the Head of the State. The second person is “Black Zero,” Imran’s favourite agent in the Secret Services. The third is a long time friend, Roshee. She is an Anglo-Burmese girl who Imran saves during one of his adventures (Bhayanak Aadmi), through which she gets to know his secret identity. Roshee is trustworthy and has helped Imran in several cases. Imran’s secret is safe with her.

The other two personalities Imran assumes from time to time are the Prince of Dhump and Rana Tahavvar Al Sandooqui. As the Prince of Dhump, he is the head of a fictitious state known as Dhump. He assumes this role whenever he has to use his influence over others through a show of riches and power. With an armed bodyguard (Joseph) in company, this character is hilarious beyond belief. Rana Tahavvar Al Sandooqui is shown as a businessman who is out of town most of the time. His huge villa, “Rana Palace,” is apparently left under the care of his servants and the bodyguards. In reality, the Secret Service members use the mansion as a hideout and operations center. The two other buildings that the Secret Service uses are “Daanish Manzil,” which was destroyed during an adventure, and “Psycho Mansion,” which operated under the disguise of a psychiatric clinic.

Imran appears to work as a normal member of the Secret Service. His fellow team members are always either making fun of him, or having fun at his expense. These same members, when they hear the harsh and commanding voice of X-2 on the phone, shiver with fear. They know he is around, watching them. X-2 rarely appears in front of them; when he does, he is wearing a black mask and tight black clothes that completely obscure his identity. Of course, being an expert at altering identities, he also completely changes his voice before addressing them. The rest of the time, X-2 either contacts his subordinates through the transmitter or telephone.

Imran has perfected the art of literally dodging bullets. This is called “Sing Art,” which he learns from an international Chinese criminal, “Sing Hee.” Sing had devised a technique by which he is able to dodge any bullets fired on him by judging the hand movements of the assailant, and moving swiftly. Sing Hee performs it in front of Imran once (Lashoan ka Bazaar), and Imran asks him to do it again. That is enough for Imran to grasp the technique involved. Then Imran surprises Sing Hee by challenging him to shoot at him; Sing Hee cannot believe his eyes when he is unable to shoot Imran. Despite the fact that both characters are bloodthirsty for each other, the evil con man declares Imran to be his rightful nephew in the cunning art.

Imran’s complex personality seems to be result of his upbringing. Ibne Safi divulges details about his personality in Dr. Duago. Imran’s father, Karam Rahman, Director General of the Central Intelligence Bureau, has always been a very strict man. He wants everything done his way. Mr. Rahman had Imran attend a Christian Missionary School as a child, for the quality of education was better there. Imran’s mother is a very religious and pious Muslim lady. She wants him to follow the religion. As a result, he gets confused over what he learns in school and what he is compelled to practice at home. He develops a dual personality at home and in the outside world. As a result of his father’s dictatorial rule, his missionary school’s training, and contradictions in what he learns and what he practices, he ridicules almost anything and everything. Despite all his personality shifts and conflicting scenarios, he seems to adhere to the basic principles of human rights, and law and order.

Like Faridi, Imran is also unmoved by the charms of the fairer sex; hence, he is very hard to trap. Due to his apparently vulnerable nature and innocent looks, women develop a crush on him as soon as they meet him; but most of the time, Imran treats them roughly and offers nothing but a cold shoulder. Maybe like Faridi, he too deals with this as strictly a personal matter not to be publicized. Imran’s wit is legendary too. His remarks are humorous and satirical on almost every aspect of life. His personality is enjoyable, yet at the same time provides food for thought.

Imran is fiercely patriotic and has no qualms about doing anything whatsoever to protect his country, which is never named in any of the books. Imran is portrayed as a character that is so preoccupied with fighting spies working against his country, that he simply has no time for trivial things like love, romance, marriage, or settling down with a family. Imran’s only priority in life is to defend his homeland from its enemies; everything else is secondary.

  • Mr. Karam Rahman

Rahman Sahib (Karram Rahman) is the Director General of the Central Intelligence Bureau, and a very strict person both at home and in the office. Although Imran solves a very mysterious case in Bhayanak Aadmi, he does not like the way Imran handles the situation; so he fires Imran and also asks him to leave the family house. Underneath his tough exterior, he loves Imran and is internally pleased with his successes. However, his stubbornness does not allow him to reveal his sentiments.

  • Amma Bi

Imran’s mother, Amma Bi, is an eastern style housewife. She is a victim of the strict nature of her husband, Rahman Sahib. She does not want Imran to leave the house, but is helpless to do anything because of her husband. Whenever Imran visits her, she beats him with her slippers.

  • Surayya

Imran’s younger sister Surayya is blessed with the strict nature of her father. She is also fed up with Imran’s unserious behavior and lets no opportunity slide to show her anger towards her brother.

Later, Imran opens up a private investigating agency with the name of “Roshee & Co. Forwarding & Clearing Agents” in Jahannam Ki Raqqasa. She works for Imran for some time, but later leaves him in Larkiyoan Ka Jazeeradue to his unserious nature. However, Imran still involves her in many cases later on. Roshee also knows that Imran is the Chief of the Secret Service.

When Imran’s father Rahman Sahib asked Imran to leave the house, Sulaiman also came along with him. He is very loyal and does not like Imran’s bodyguard Joseph, who is always drunk. Later, he gets married to a girl named Gulrukh.

* Joseph Mugonda

Before meeting Imran, Joseph was a heavyweight champion. His philosophy was that whoever could knock him out; he would willingly work for that person for the rest of his life, considering that person his Boss. In Challees Aik Baavan, Joseph is serving the villain. Imran not only defeats Joseph’s boss, but he also manages to easily defeat Joseph. Since then, Joseph has never left Imran. Joseph likes to remain in a military uniform with gun holsters on each side, carrying two identical loaded revolvers. Joseph is insanely alcoholic, beginning each day by gulping down half a bottle of whiskey to “open his eyes.” If Joseph does not get his ale, he goes into a deep depression and begins to act strangely; though he remains fiercely loyal to Imran, no matter what happens. In the novel Raat Ka Shehzaada, Imran helps Sir Sultan by solving a case; in return he is offered a permanent position in the Secret Service. Imran, as Chief Officer of the Secret Service, reports directly to him. Sir Sultan likes Imran for his good qualities, but sometimes he too gets frustrated with Imran’s unserious behavior. He is an old friend of Imran’s father.

Black Zero is the most favourite subordinate of X-2 (Imran), but none of the members of Secret Service know about his true identity. He lives in Danish Manzil and is known to others as Tahir Sahib. He is the only agent who knows that Imran is the Head of Secret Service. Black Zero has been trained to replicate X-2’s deep, hoarse voice; he gives orders to the Secret Service members, acting as X-2 when Imran is in the field working with his subordinates and unable to call directly. This has the dual effect of reassuring Imran’s team members that he is not X-2, a fact that almost everyone suspects at one time or other. Black Zero has the best qualities of an agent; sadly, however, during an adventure in Darandoan Ki Basti, Black Zero is killed. Imran faces the task of finding a new agent in Gumshuda Shehzaadi to work in his position.

Juliana Fitzwater is another very talented member of the Secret Service, and is second in command. She is a beautiful Swedish girl, who was in love with X-2 in the early days when Imran had not yet joined the Secret Services. She always desired to see X-2, though she was also afraid of him at the same time. X-2 has mentioned in the novels that she has seen him on many occasions, but has always ignored him. However, when Imran joins the Secret Service, Juliana gets so impressed by his qualities that she falls for him instead. Juliana believes that Imran is X-2, and clearly mentions it to him on one occasion; Imran is initially shocked, but manages to cover his identity with the help of Black Zero.

Safdar Saeed is the most prominent, respectful, and loyal agent after Black Zero, and Imran relies heavily on him. Safdar respects Imran greatly (by heart), and believes that Imran has similar qualities to those of X-2.

  • Sing Hee

He is the most genius and treacherous villain who appears both in Jasoosi Duniya and Imran Series. Sing was born to a Chinese father and Mongolian mother, and is forced to leave his country after a failed coup d’etat. Since then he has moved from country to country, trying to avail all opportunities to display his criminal, lustful, and avaricious nature. He is very thin in appearance with a visibly weak physique, but is actually very strong. He is famous, among those who somewhat know him, as “jonk” (leech) because of his ability to clench his enemy, leading to their suffocation and unconsciousness.

He first appears in Neeli Lakeer. He is a colleague of archeologist Arthur, who discovers the body of an ancient princess buried in the snows of mountain Alpom. A silver sheet is wrapped around the neck of the body, with some scriptures indicating a hidden treasure. He once mocks Faridi and gets slapped so hard by the other man that he stumbles several steps across the room. Instead of displaying his rage instantly, he shrugs it off by saying that many bums have slapped him, but it is an honor to have been smacked by such a reputable celebrity as Faridi. It is quite obvious that he keeps his anger confined, fueling his hatred and vengeance for a more suitable event. Such is his control over his emotions, making him even more dangerous. Faridi gets back the silver sheet to return to the government of Chile but Sing Hee manages to escape and then steals the sheet from the custody of the government in Khooni Bagoolay and travels to South America in quest of the treasure. Faridi follows him up to “Taareek Vadi” (Black Valley) but at the last moment Sing Hee escapes by jumping into a cave. Sing Hee’s next appearance is in Lashoan Ka Bazaar in Imran Series. Faridi has further encounters with him in Raushan Hayoola, Zard Fitnaa and Zehreela Sayaarah

Imran first meets Sing Hee in London, in Lashoan Ka Bazaar, where Imran is conducting research in criminology. A criminal named McLawrence has terrorized the city. Imran tries to investigate the situation, and comes across Sing Hee. Sing had devised a technique by which he is able to dodge any bullets fired on him by judging the hand movements of the assailant, and moving swiftly. Sing Hee performs it in front of Imran once, and Imran asks him to do it again.

Their next meeting takes place in Joank Ki Wapsee. Now Sing is working for Zeroland. This story line continues in Zehreeli Tasweer and Baebaakon Ki Talaash. Sing Hee is unable to kill Imran, because Zeroland requires that Imran remain alive. Sing Hee is the major villain in many other novels such as Seh Rangee Maut, Muta-Harrik Dhaariyaan, Joank Aur Naagan, Halaakat Khaez, Zebra Maen, and Jangal Ki Sheheriyat.

  • Theresia Bumble Bee of Bohemia (T3B)

Ibne Safi has written many novels based around the character of Theresia. She is a very smart lady who represents Zeroland. She has the ability to change her expressions in such a manner that it becomes almost impossible to recognize her. She is very impressed with Imran’s personality. She first appears in Kaalay Charaagh. She apperas in many other novels such as; Khoon Kay Piyaasay, Alphansay, Darandoan Ki Basti, Piyaasa Samandar, Seh Rangee Maut, Mutaharrik Dhaariyaan, Joank Aur Naagan, Halaakat Khaez, Zebra Maen, Jangal Ki Sheheriyat, Zulmat Ak Devta.
