[edit] Original cast

The following characters starred in the first episode, which aired 6 September 1986.[3]

[edit] Ewart Plimmer

Ewart Plimmer was the show's original consultant. During his three years in the show Ewart demonstrated a dedication to the job which cost him his marriage and his relationship with his daughter. Ultimately he died in the third season after his second heart attack.

Ewart was played by Bernard Gallagher until 3-5.

[edit] Barbara 'Baz' Wilder

Later Fairhead, then Hayes and Wilder. She was the Senior House Officer (later Locum Consultant; Senior Registrar; Consultant).

She was portrayed by Julia Watson from 1-1 to 1-15, 9-20 to 12-26, and finally, from 18-12 to 18-19. Over a period of eighteen years, she made regular appearances on the show. In series one Baz had a string of relationships, culminating in her pregnancy by Charge Nurse Charlie Fairhead. She secretly aborted the child and their relationship consequently collapsed.

Baz returned to Holby towards the end of Series 9, accompanied by her new husband Peter Hayes. She and Charlie attempted to keep their relationship strictly professional but they could not contain their feelings for each other and sought a physical relationship.

Baz's marriage to Peter had always been unstable and ended following her pregnancy with Charlie's love child. Divorced, Baz married Charlie in a wedding ceremony which saw four former Casualty stars reprising their roles.

The marriage did not last and Baz ultimately fled to Canada, taking their child Louis with them. They were reunited briefly when Baz returned in series 18, but suffered massive head injuries in a road accident and her life support machine was turned off after the doctors certified her as brain dead.

[edit] Charlie Fairhead

Charlie Fairhead is the only original character currently remaining on the show. Over the last twenty years Charlie has served as the department's Nurse Manager. He has always demonstrated a passion for the patients' welfare and a strong sense of medical ethics.

Charlie has always shown tremendous nobility: in the opening scene of the first episode of Casualty, Charlie arrived in an ageing Volkswagen Beetle; it transpired he had sold his previous, more desirable car to pay for his mother's operation.

Charlie has had had various on-screen relationships over the years. The love of his life though was Barbara "Baz" Wilder - another original character. Baz left Casualty after the first season but returned nearly a decade later. Trapped in an unhappy marriage she pursued a relationship with Charlie, ultimately becoming pregnant with their child Louis. Baz divorced her husband and married Charlie. The marriage however was later dissolved after Baz went for a job in America.

Baz briefly returned to the series to be by the bedside of her ill father but ended up dying after being involved in a road accident.

Charlie himself has been brushed with death on several occasions including a shooting, a hit and run involving a stolen ambulance, a coronary embolism and most recently an attempted drowning. He recently returned to the series after a six month sabbatical.

Charlie is played by Derek Thompson.

[edit] Megan Roach

Megan Roach was played by Brenda Fricker. She enjoyed a memorable five year stint in the programme during which time she was held hostage, divorced her husband and watched one of her colleagues and friends die.

Following Brenda Fricker's successful role in My Left Foot Megan was written out of the series. The character moved back to her native Ireland. In series 12 she returned for the wedding of two other original characters, Charlie Fairhead and Barbara Wilder.

Her position in the hospital was State Enrolled Nurse. She appeared from 1x01 to 5x13, and appeared in 12x25 and 12x26.

She returned for a Comic Relief special in 2007 - episode 21x29 - in which her grandson had mental health problems, a key area which Comic Relief aims to raise funds for.

[edit] Clive King

Clive King, the Staff Nurse, was portrayed by George Harris, and remained on the show until 1-15.

[edit] Lisa "Duffy" Duffin

Lisa "Duffy" Duffin was played by Cathy Shipton, and is the third longest-serving character in the show's history.

Duffy left the show in season eight following her unexpected pregnancy with her husband Andrew. She returned four years later in series twelve for the wedding of Charlie Fairhead and Barbara Wilder wedding along with Megan Roach and Mark Ashford. She confided in Charlie that her marriage to Andrew was crumbling. However when she returned in season 14 she and Andrew were still together and remained together until his death in Season 17. She later became engaged to security guard and con artist Ryan who disappeared with her life savings. He returned, reimbursed the money in full, declared his love for Duffy and the two disappeared to forge a new life in New Zealand. Their relationship evidently did not last as Duffy reappeared at the start of season 21 without him.

Her positions on the show were as follows: Student Nurse, Staff Nurse, Agency Nurse, Senior Staff Nurse, Sister, and Head Clinic Nurse, while in Cambodia. She appeared until 8-13, and appeared for 12-25 and 12-26; she re-joined the cast from 13-04 to 17-31, and re-joined a second time in the 21st series.
