The King of Fighters series contains many characters, some of which are from other SNK fighting games, and some of which have appeared in other games. Here's a list of characters that have appeared in a fighting capacity since its original incarnation in 1994, including both King of Fighters EX games and KOF Maximum Impact.

- Benimaru Nikaido (二階堂 紅丸): One of Kyo's best friends, is a very skilled and very narcissistic fighter. His attacks consist mainly of electric blasts.
- Brian Battler (ブライアン・バトラー): A former footballer who represents U.S.A. in the '94 tournament. Some believed Maxima was based off him, by the debut of the latter.
- Chang Koehan (チャン・コーハン): One of the criminals taken in by Kim Kaphwan to be taught righteous ways.
- Chin Gentsai (鎮 元斎): Teacher of Athena Asamiya. Chin is versed in all forms of Kung Fu. Chin mainly uses the Drunken Fist form. He even carries his wine gourds into battle.
- Choi Bounge (チョイ・ボンゲ): Chang's criminal partner, also taken in by Kim.
- Goro Daimon (大門 五郎): A judo expert and a long-time associate of Kyo and Benimaru; currently has one baby son.
- Heavy D! (ヘヴィ・D!): Boxer, responsible for gathering the American Team.
- Kyo Kusanagi (草薙 京): The long-term hero of the whole KOF history, descends from one of the three clans who sealed Orochi.
- Lucky Glauber (ラッキー・グローバー): A basketballer who mixtures his fighting techniques with the ones of his sport.
- Rugal Bernstein: A criminal empowered by Orochi, was the host of the '94 and '95 tournaments.
- Saisyu Kusanagi (草薙 柴舟): Father of Kyo Kusanagi and patriarch of the Kusanagi clan.
[edit] Characters from KOF Orochi Saga
- Chizuru Kagura (神楽 ちずる): Descendant of the Yata clan, the last of the three ones responsible by sealing Orochi. Chizuru is the current guardian of the seal.
- Chris (クリス): The current host for Orochi, is also a drummer.
- Iori Yagami (八神 庵): Enemy of the Kusanagi family (more specifically Kyo), belongs to one of the clans who sealed Orochi, 1800 years ago.
- Leona Heidern (レオナ): A female soldier taken in by Heidern when she was still young. Orochi blood runs in her veins.
- Leopold Goenitz (ゲーニッツ): One of Orochi's Eight Heads, he can control the wind at will. He was behind the '96 tournament, just to inform the coming of Orochi.
- Mature (マチュア): One of Rugal's secretaries. She teams up with Iori under the demands of Goenitz, after the fall of Rugal.
- Orochi (オロチ): A divine being who seeks to eradicate humanity in order to protect the world from destruction. He is served by his Heralds (supernatural beings) and eight human families who serve as his earthly representatives. Chris, Leopold Goenitz, Leona Heidern, Mature, Yashiro Nanakase, Shermie, Vice, and Ryuji Yamazaki are each descendants of one of the eight families.
- Shermie (シェルミー): One of Orochi's Eight Heads, is a very attractive French keyboarder.
- Shingo Yabuki (矢吹 真吾): A high school student who idolizes Kyo Kusanagi; uses the Kusanagi-style martial arts, but cannot cast flames like Kyo and Saisyu.
- Vice (バイス): One of Rugal's secretaries, sent in by Goenitz to team up with Iori after the demise of the foster.
- Yashiro Nanakase (七枷 社): Also one of Orochi's Eight Heads. Skillful guitarist, he also has a top-charting band with Shermie and Chris.

- Angel (アンヘル): One of the NESTS agents, who collaborates with K9999 to make sure NESTS plans go right.
- Bao (包): A boy taught by Chin Gentsai on Psycho Power fighting. His powers must have something to do with Kensou's power outage, as the latter is powerless in KOF '99 and 2000, while he regains his powers, leaving Bao without them in 2001.
- Foxy (フォクシー): A former mid-level agent of the NESTS cartel; currently one of the caretakers of Kula Diamond.
- Hinako Shijou (四条 雛子): The young daughter of a multi-billionaire; has an unusual interest in sumo wrestling, which is also her fighting style.
- Igniz (イグニス): The head of NESTS and the final opponent of the 2001 tournament.
- Jhun Hoon (전훈): An Taekwondo master and an associate of Kim Kaphwan; an avid fan of Athena Asamiya.
- K' (ケイ・ダッシュ): A man with Kyo's DNA injected in him, which makes him a clone (of sorts) of Kyo.
- K9999 (ケイ・フォーナイン): The ultimate clone of K'. Greatly resembles Tetsuo Shima from Akira.
- Krizalid (クリザリッド): Boss character from The King of Fighters '99: Millennium Battle (and a playable character in the Sega Dreamcast port). Krizalid wears a special battle suit that stores fight data and feeds it into his body. He is a perfected clone of K'.
- Kula Diamond (クーラ・ダイアモンド): A young girl designed by the NESTS cartel as an "anti-K'"; uses ice-based powers.
- Lin (麟): A mysterious Chinese ninja, he seeks the traitor of Hizoku, the clan to which he and Duo Lon belong.
- Maxima (マキシマ): K's partner, is another NESTS runaway.
- May Lee Jinju (メイ・リー): A student of Kim Kaphwan and a believer of justice.
- Ramon (ラモン): A Mexican wrestler; has a crush on Vanessa.
- Ron (龍): The traitor of the Hizoku clan. An ally of NESTS, he seems to have an interest on Kensou's psychic power source. Not a playable character as of now.
- Seth (セス): An agent working against NESTS, together with Vanessa. Fights using self-defense techniques.
- Vanessa (ヴァネッサ): A female boxer, is Seth's work partner and is always turning off Ramon's approaches.
- Whip (ウィップ): Another NESTS former agent, she joined the Ikari Warriors to find out information about herself. After she finds out she was used as a NESTS project, she teams up with K' and Maxima.
- Zero (ゼロ): A top-ranking agent and commander of the NESTS cartel; one of the aides of Igniz. There are actually two Zeros in the KOF storyline; the final boss of the 2000 edition is actually a clone of the one who precedes Igniz in the next game.

- Adelheid Bernstein (アーデルハイド): Son of Rugal Bernstein.
- Ash Crimson (アッシュ・クリムゾン): A mysterious man who hails from France and wields green flames. Seemingly, he has a keen interest on a second wake of the Orochi and, to do this, he was capable to steal the Yata Mirror from Chizuru and the Hakkeshu Orb from Yagami. His next target is the Sword of Kusanagi.
- Duo Lon (デュオロン): A Hizoku clansman, fellow of Lin, he too seeks Ron. Disbanded from Ash's team when he learned from his intentions.
- Elisabeth Blanctorche (エリサベート): A female warrior wielding a cropper and possessing white flame. She seems to be related to Ash Crimson.
- Magaki (祸忌): A Herald of Orochi; uses powerful energy attacks.
- Maki Kagura (神楽 まき): She is the late elder sister of Chizuru Kagura, and former guardian of the Orochi Seal.
- Malin (まりん): A mysterious young girl who fights using "illegal and legal arts"; uses many hidden weapons such as knives and spring-loaded boot blades. In the 2003 tournament, she harbored a hatred towards Yuri Sakazaki.
- Momoko (桃子): A young girl skilled in Capoeira.
- Mukai (無界): A Herald of Orochi; uses earth-based powers and has the ability to "fossilize things".
- Oswald (オスワルド): A mysterious middle-aged man who uses playing cards (much like Gambit) as weapons.
- Shen Woo (シェン・ウー): A brawler raised in Shanghai, is quite a good friend of Ash and very self-confident, pretty much like Joe Higashi.
- Shion (紫苑): An assistant of Magaki; skilled in the use of martial arts and weapons, particularly a spear.
[edit] Characters from KOF Maximum Impact Saga
- Alba Meira- The star of Maximum Impact who earned the nickname "The Devil of Daybreak" due to his devil tattoo which can be seen in the intro to the game. Alba is a former soldier and prodigy of Fate, the former boss of the Southtown gangs, who enters the tournament so he can contact (and destroy) Duke to basically rule Southtown in Fates stead.
- Chae Lim- Star pupil of Fatal Fury and King of Fighters character Kim Kaphwan, who enters the tournament in his place.
- Duke - The leader of the Mephistopheles gang that controls Southtown. Earned the nickname "Hell's Executioner" because of the prominent scar across his neck. (Note: Duke is playable ONLY after beating the game as both Meira siblings.)
- Lien Neville- An assassin who Duke hires to enter the KOF tournament and dispose of any insurgency. But what are her true aims?
- Mignon Beart- A young witch-in-training who enters the KOF tournament to test her own might and help create world peace.
- Soiree Meira- Alba's younger twin brother, who is more brash than his cool-headed older brother. He is determined to help Alba dispose of Duke by any means necessary. Thinks the only power in southtown should be Alba's Power
- Nagase(流星)- KOF Max Impact 2
- Luise Meyrink- Rich aristocrat daughter, who enters the KOF tournament to search for her kidnapped father.
- Ninon Beart- Mignon's younger sister, who practices Black Magic, the opposite of Mignon. She enters the competition through the hate for her sister, and wants to prove she is better than Mignon.

- Rose Bernstein- Daughter of Rugal Bernstein. Not a playable character.
- Guidel- Leona's father. Also, one of Orochi's Heavenly Kings, possessing power over water.
- Diana- One of Kula Diamond's caretakers, along with Foxy.
