List of battleships by country
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This table lists all battleships and their predecessors from approximately 1399 onward:
The lists include all carracks, galleons, ships of the line, turret/barbette ships, pre-dreadnoughts, dreadnoughts, pocket battleships and coastal defence ships. All battleship pages should link from here.
It is divided into 4 eras:
1) 1399-1639 - First large sailing ships with side-mounted cannons pointing through the sides of the ship
2) 1640-1858 - The advent of the "line-of-battle" tactic where ships would support each other with broadsides rather than meléeing
3) 1859-1905 - Iron and steam replace wood and sail power
4) 1906-1944 - The advent of Dreadnought-type ("all-big-gun") battleships
